Nintendo says DLC for the 3DS title will be out this October in Japan; no word on North American and European equivalent.

Nintendo has announced it will be releasing three packs of DLC for New Super Mario Bros. 2 on the 3DS via today's Japanese Nintendo Direct live stream.

According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the first pack will be called the "Ippatsu Shoubu de Dokidoki" pack, which is aimed at expert gamers. The second pack, "Go! Go! Gold Mario", will feature three courses where the objective is to collect more than 30,000 gold coins.

The third pack, "Kiroku ni Challenge! A", is a standard coin-collecting challenge mode where a player's score is uploaded worldwide. All three DLC packs will have three fixed stages each.

The DLC will be available in Japan on October 2 and will cost 200 yen each ($2.50). Gamers can access the DLC from the shop button at the bottom of the coin rush mode menu in the game. This story will be updated with details of its North American and Europe equivalents soon.

With DLC, we have gotten:

1) A free patch for Mario Kart 7

2) 3 DLC packs for NSMB2

Both titles were good, complete experiences. Nintendo has a soul, unlike other companies. Hopefully, though, they keep that up.

I am happy to hear about this! Normally I despise DLC, but New Super Mario Bros 2 was a very enjoyable game to me, surprisingly! It was a long and satisfying game to complete, but I am left wanting more, so these DLC packs are more than welcome (especially if they add difficulty).Also, $2.50 for a DLC pack? Seems like Nintendo understands how DLC is done properly!

Wow, a Mario portable game getting DLC..!? And until then I thought Nintendo wouldn't go to such lengths... guess it speaks for itself that being out of the trend is being out of the game.

I remember the days when the first Mario game was ever released. No such thing as a DLC.

Whoa, Nintendo doing a DLC?  Good for them.  I'm excited, though Mario is far from my favorite series.

I like how Nintendo are doing DLC. It doesn't feel like it was withheld, that it was developed after beta. I wish all developers took this approach to DLC.

 @kavadias1981 A smart developer would just release completed DLC a few months after launch to keep the public none the wiser.  Personally, I think DLC is a bad thing all around, regardless of whether it is disc locked, day 1, months later, or purposely withheld content.  Expansion packs are acceptable because often times they are stand alone, or they are roughly the same size as the original.  I wish the nickel and dime-ing tactics would just go away...but people KEEP BUYING IT!

kavadias1981

 @ZOD777 mmm I agree with you. DLC is a great idea to expand on a game, as you pointed out. It keeps us interested long after the game's completion. It is the withheld DLC thing that I don't agree with. Yes, gaming is a business but when will it end? Will we have to pay extra for the other half of a full game someday? Makes me wonder.

 @Halloll I see what you did there, however I do support DLC if it's done right, and so far it has been far away from being wrong. Games like Mario have much to win by using DLC to expand upon themselves.

DLC is not a big deal.  If you like the content involved, buy it.  if you think it is ruining gaming then, do not buy it.  simple.

 @Cryptic_Shadow what if you like it but the concept of DLC is bleeding your pockets dry and you wish for the days back when complete games were still complete games?

Cryptic_Shadow
Cryptic_Shadow like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @Immortallix Totally.  Well said, mate.  I think the concept of DLC does have great potential.  It is something that couldn't have been possible several years ago, when games did ship complete.  They still ship complete for the most part but when Devs and Pubs add-on pointless content clearly to make $$$, it gives this concept as a whole a very bad reputation.

I understand charging for add-on content but if the price outweighs the content I will not buy it.  There is decent material available, we just have to be mindful of its worth and if it is worth adding onto our favorite games.  We should never allow 'them' to bleed our pockets.

DLC is the reason I'm always waiting for a "complete edition". Just look at Saints Row: The Third, RE 5, Arkham City, etc. I was hoping Sleeping Dogs was getting a "complete edition" because I didn't bought it yet. Same thing to Resident Evil 6; no need to rush on the first day.

 @Q-abs and i found i didn't need any of those packs.  So instead of buying it and complaining like tons of other people I chose not to buy it.

 @Cryptic_Shadow yeah you right, but sometimes it iritates me when they released the cheaper one

 @ZOD777  @Q-abs totally.  I too felt cheated when they re-released a newer version of SF4 as soon as they did.  SF4 was Feb 17 09, SSF4 was April 27 10.  All it offered was an updated roster.  I'll never buy another SF game now.

ZOD777
ZOD777 like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

 @Q-abs  @Cryptic_Shadow That bothers me too, so I don't buy most games day 1 anymore.  I was especially jaded about Street Fighter 4.  Only several months later Super SF4 came out.  Then SFxTekken with the disc locked characters.  The practices revolving around DLC are a bit shady.  (Yes I know SSF4 is not DLC, but it might as well have been).

 @abHS4L88 what he says may actually be truth. iwata and the rest of Nintendo may really care about their fan base but since when did mario or ANY Nintendo game need DLC for me or anyone else to play their games? i still bust out the the SNES, N64 and Gamecube games from time to time. this DLC nonsense just needs to die IMO. just suffer a horrible painful disturbing death and suffer in hell.

abHS4L88

 @superkadeemx I played Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation and we had Soul Calibur 2. I also had Gauntlet Legends for Dreamcast and played Viewtiful Joe, it's mainly the 1st party games that I missed out on since I couldn't really buy games back then and my brother was never really a big Nintendo fan. We grew up on Sega so when the Dreamcast died out, my brother moved onto Sony and Nintendo.

I'll try to get my hands on the Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii :D

 @abHS4L88 whaaat?!  sunshine, wind waker, metroid prime, star fox, fire emblem, metal gear solid 1 remake, soul caliber 2, resident evil viewtiful joe, gauntlet dark legacy. GREAT TIMES! you must get them games 1day man. the gamecube has a couple gems worth checking out in 2012.

 @superkadeemx

Yeah, we're all different, and I'm sure there's a lot of people who feel the same way I do so it's good that Nintendo now has that option if they want to make use of it.

Don't worry, I'll definitely get it, same with Windwaker, missed out on a lot of awesome Gamecube games :P

 @abHS4L88 i happen to be one of those gamers, Sunshine was a great game it definitely deserves a sequel. You should get the game when it comes available to you. I tend to get sad myself when i get close to the end of a mario game and i was still left wanting more after galaxy 2 but if its the end of the game its the end and im satisfied. i'd rather them end the game with a bang than to prolong the inevitable.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88 like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @superkadeemx

I know that and Galaxy 2 did get those comments unfortunately, but I agree, anyone who just writes it off can just yell "YOLO!" and run down a mountain :D

With Mario games though, when it's done, I tend to feel sad sometimes because it's like "It's over and I want to play more." so adding in additional levels while crafting new games (for me) seems like a good way to keep the game alive while waiting for the next title.

Plus we've seen how radically different each 3D Mario title tends to be which is why Galaxy 2 was created because Nintendo recognized how much potential the original had and didn't want to just leave it at that, and thank goodness they decided to make a sequel.

I know tons of gamers are still dying for a Sunshine sequel (never played it but if it appears on Virtual Console, I'm soooo downloading it).

superkadeemx like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @abHS4L88 i dont remember ppl saying that about Galaxy 2 and if there are ppl saying that then they can go straight to a certain hot place. besides isnt DLC still rehashing ideas for an old game anyway? 1nce a game has been defeated then its over. i thought replay value was based on how good the initial game was, the secrets/glitches that couldve been missed or to kick a really hard boss's ass effortlessly the 2nd time around. downloading an xtra level for a game thats been beaten makes me think that could've been used in entire new game. unlike call of duty Nintendo tends to put some actual effort into their sequels.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @superkadeemx

But then people will just whine and complain saying "Oh look at Nintendo just rehashing ideas again, Mario's the new CALL OF DUTY!" This could be more effective and would drive sales of the original game, especially if the content is free.

superkadeemx
superkadeemx like.author.displayName 1 Like

 @abHS4L88 good point or save them DLC ideas and make a super mario 3d land 2. get an entire brand new game verses 5-10 levels

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @superkadeemx

Then again, there's only a certain amount of content you can include with the initial game and with the Super Mario games being spaced out compared to before, DLC is a good way to keep these titles alive for 3-4 years as long as Nintendo keeps the DLC at a low price or even better, free :D

I wouldn't care much for the challenge stages, but I'd gladly pay $2.50 for like 5-10 more levels in Super Mario 3D Land.

Nah, it's a good statement from Iwata and I don't expect every person who comments to scroll down this page so I don't mind sharing it if it makes them feel better :P

You can't blame people for being very concern about this due to the amount times we have been decieved by DLC practices (for Capcom's case, locked content). But this is Nintendo, rest assure I am not a Niintendo fanboy, I don't own a Wii or 3DS, I do in fact own a PS3. Nintendo seems like one of the few gaming companies out there that actually cares for their consumers' support, as oppose to milking them for all their worth.

The fact that Iwata came out and acknowledges people's concerns and told them not worry, just goes to show that Niintendo is fully aware on how shady companies have got with DLC.

They should release a 2d mario game with all past power ups and a level editor. No need for dlc in that case.

 @fester420 do you know how sick a level editor would be.  damn that is a community in itself.
