New Super Luigi U coming to retail in August

Nintendo reveals standalone version of Luigi-themed New Super Mario Bros. U DLC coming to stores this summer for $30; content alone will be available June 20 for $20.

A packaged standalone version of the Super Luigi U downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U will launch in North America at retail on August 25, Nintendo announced today.

Gamers will not need New Super Mario Bros. U to play New Super Luigi U, which will cost $30.

Those who own a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U already can pick up the Super Luigi U DLC when it launches through the Wii U eShop on June 20 for $20.

The news came during the latest Nintendo Direct today, where Nintendo president Satoru Iwata showed a new gameplay trailer for the content. He also revealed that Nabbit, a creature from New Super Mario Bros. U, will be a playable character in the content.

Nintendo announced the Luigi-themed DLC in February, calling it "large-scale" and "similar to the development of full software." It features updated versions of the first game's 82 courses with Luigi leading the way, instead of Mario.

The news comes a day after Nintendo revealed that New Super Mario Bros. U, a Wii U launch title, has now sold 770,000 units in the United States alone. It is a sequel to the original Wii's New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which has sold close to 28 million units life-to-date.

They should change the title to: "New Super Green Mario U"

Seems to be a tie-in just to keep Nintendo players happy until they can release 3D Mario, Mario Kart etc...  Just like Wind Waker HD is for the new Zelda game.

Nintendo should make new franchises that use the features of their consoles. Like SuckerPunch, Insomniac and NaughtyDog did; re-inviting themselves instead of relying on 2 or 3 games to sell their consoles. If they keep that way, they will surely die soon enough.

I love how, they are milking a milked franchise >_>.

@Jerell_rast And that is why all the trolling that's going on is happening in the "Wii U is crap" article. The mods themselves hate Nintendo so they turn a blind eye so they can bash something that they don't like.

It also proves that all mods are incompetent losers that abuse their power for opinions that they agree with and ban anybody that post opinions that they don't agree with.

It's funny how mods try to defend themselves by saying that lack of respecting others (in other words, being an a**hole) leads you to banishment. Well answer me this, and don't try to dodge this question like every other punk-ass, bias moderator that care about getting their d*** sucked (figuratively speaking) rather than doing a good job, if showing lack of respect leads you to banishment then how do you explain the majority of all gaming web sites being filled with asshole?

@Jerell_rast yeah if they're going to milk it, they could at least add some banana or strawberry flavoring to the milk, right?

Wonder what this will bring to the table.... hope there's actually a difference and it's not just Luigi as the main dude instead of Mario

so let me get this streight you people are ok with  a call of duty every year a madden every year  , a new killzone every year a new halo every year a new forza every year and a new gears every year ,  but when its mario its milked right? get real  besides this is a big dlc package,      not a entirely new game,   wasnt meant to be , its offered as retail for those who dont wanna waste hard drive space or for those who dont own the original ,    whats call of duty get for dlc for fifteen bucks? 5 maps ,   probably already in the game to ,

Ultra_Taco

@mariokart64fan People are complaining like this because this has been happening for 20+ years.

Also, Killzone  and Gears of War have not had a new game every year, and Halo has only been doing that for 4 years.

Edit: Oh, and Forza has not had a new game every year either.

Well, I'll admit it. For a moment, there, a gear in my brain turned just enough in consideration of buying a Wii U and New Super Mario Bros. U just to get this.

Sorry, Nintendo. I made it that far, at least.

$20 seems steep for those who already own the game. Updated courses and Luigi leading the way but no new content really doesn't sound worth it. That said, as a Luigi fan who doesn't own Super Mario Bros U (or a Wii U for that matter) I'd buy it (if I had a Wii U).

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Kraken422

How is that steep? This DLC basically doubles the single player content of the game since every stage is pretty much a new stage. Most DLC only adds in like 15-25% more content and usually costs $10-$15.

Damn, more recycled old-school mechanics is all that Nintendo can offer as of now. I am sorry Nintendo but this is garbage.

DoctorsTardis

@Sardinar If nintendo radically changed the mechanics of mario, I'd sharpen my pitchfork.

Sardinar
Sardinar

@DoctorsTardis @Sardinar They could start by introducing new franchises.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Sardinar @DoctorsTardis

Yet every time they do, you idiots still go back to saying "Where are the new IPs, Nintendo's all about Mario and Zelda" which is true since there have been 3 new franchises Nintendo added to their catalog over the past year.

@Sardinar

Is it really too much to ask of people to read and use their brains? This is DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U so obviously the mechanics will be the same, but since the DLC is huge, Nintendo is offering it as a standalone retail package for those who don't own the original, or just want the snazzy green case.

Sardinar
Sardinar

@abHS4L88 and that makes it a good thing? that somehow changes the fact that Nintendo has stagnated with game, console concept and design over the past decade?

This is more recycled old-school content regardless of whether's DLC, Standalone - or both combined.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@Sardinar

That's your opinion. Sure the 2D Mario games haven't really changed up significantly (especially the "New" series) but NSMBU does do add in a lot of new content and features that previous 2D Mario games didn't have that really do freshen up the experience. And again, it's DLC, who would expect DLC for a game to do a major overhaul of the game's mechanics and design?

Finally, the "New" series has been an extremely successful series so it shows Nintendo that there are tons of people who still love playing old-school style Mario games. You want something different but still Mario, play the 3D ones.

Some people seem to unaware that this is practically a whole game. Well, technically, it is, seeing as you can buy it packaged.

Anyway, I do not own Super Mario U, nor do I have any plans of getting it. Honestly, I don't give a crap about Mario. Not in Smash Bros, not in Mario Kart, and not in any other Mario game. But I like Luigi. Everyone should like Luigi.

Now, I can get the whole Super Mario game, for half the cost. And honestly, the best part is: It doesn't have Mario. Surely, I'm not the only one with this opinion.

Kraken422
Kraken422

@craigprime  You are not alone. I've loved Luigi since I played him in 2-player Super Mario World. Every time I completed a castle and saved a Yoshi it would thank Mario >:( My name's Luigi, damn it!

Get MarioKart though, I need to destroy you in that game, unless the rumors are true and Sumo Digital is working on a cross over racing title with Nintendo :D

this is the cheapest idea for dlc ever, just make new levels and throw in a character 95% similar to the one you already have, only adding that you float after jumping, a feature which they've already had before, so it's not new.

Yes, this is exactly what the Wii U needs to be a system seller - a REHASH OF A REHASH.

@Thanatos2k It's DLC, and it's at a fair price.  Nice try.

@Superzone This was the only game they announced.  So the only first party game they have coming out is DLC of a tired, lazy. slapped together rehash title?  I repeat, clearly this is exactly what the Wii U needs to be a system seller.

Nintendo, if you really want me and millions of other like minded gamers to take DLC serious, change your Nintendo Network ID policies and start shipping Wii U's with a bigger HDD. I have two of these Wii U's, and for now I'm sticking to retail only games.
