New DayZ stand-alone video shows in-game zombies

Latest DayZ devblog shows first footage of zombies in upcoming stand-alone version.

A new DayZ devblog has been released by creator Dean "Rocket" Hall, showing the first in-game footage of the shambling zombies in the upcoming stand-alone version of the game.

While the actual look of the zombies will be changed for the final version, the 21-minute video also details how the zombie pathfinding has been improved in DayZ stand-alone, allowing the speed of the zombies to be lowered to similar ranges of the players themselves. But the major difference between the upcoming stand-alone and the current mod version is that zombie spawning is now controlled entirely by the server.

At the moment, about 3,000 zombies can be spawned, but Hall says that total number will increase "quite dramatically" before the final version of the game is released.

The video also shows the formative stage of the new inventory and crafting systems, although the menus are not ready to be shown off just yet.

For more information on DayZ, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

This game is only liked because of the concept. This concept needs to be taken on board by a team of top game maker's for an epic experience because even tho dayz has it's addictive side which keep's you on the game the over all fun factor isn't that great.

The concept behind Day Z isn't unique. Hell, I remember thinking the first Left 4 Dead was going to be an open-world sandbox when it was first announced in 2007 before it turned out to be a linear shooter.

He's just the only one that's tried (besides War Z). Once an actual studio with some money decides to make a likewise game we can forget all about this.

@tommygun6644 You do realize it's not a mod anymore? Rocket is working for a developer with money behind it, Bohemia hired him and are supporting him, he's also a multiplayer map designer for Arma 3.

I think what he should add or consider is allowing for a permanent base camp. If he is adding crafting and being able to modify weapons than you want some place to store those weapons. For instance you walk around and find a military weapon and don't want to use it in fear of losing it, building a base camp, like burrowing underground or into cave and storing it along with food, water and other equipment you have collected. Or having a house that is secluded on top a mountain or hillside and able to barricade it and protect it from zombies and other players, and being able to booby trap it with trip mines or spikes or something.

I am recalling last weeks episode of The Walking Dead, where that one dude has the whole street laid with spikes and booby trapped his house, and he had that large cache of weapons and ammunition he gathered from months of scavenging and looting.

@lilromeo0606 Yeah. The zombie game I want definitely has more of those elements. I want to secure a sleeping area. Be it about placing traps outside a tent or barricading doors to a mall or an electric fence around a farm.

I want better scavenging and crafting mechanics and less people.

This game is in the uncanny valley of my perfect zombie survival game right now.

This guy needs to get his priorities straight. All his dev blogs are about graphics and features yet hes doing nothing to actually iron out the flaws in DayZ.

One of them being that the game hasnt been about surviving a zombie apocalypse for months now. Its just guys running around killing each other. What is he doing about that? Oh nevermind, hes adding crafting to the game........yup.more ways to kill each other, just what DayZ needed.

I think he has completely lost sight of what actually made this mod so much fun and sparked such a huge following.

@Kr3isen Step 1: Avoid the cities/big towns

I'm not sure if this is just gamer logic or people not used to survival games. The last place you want to be when everyone is trying to kill you, is where everyone is.

Back when I played DayZ I went in a circuit through most of the smaller town, the castles and the deer stands. I went 4 weeks without even encountering another person on fully packed servers.

tommygun6644

@Kr3isen There is no incentive to kill zombies or go into zombie-infested towns. All the good crap is in chopper wrecks out in the middle of nowhere.

@Kr3isen The War Z is far, far worse for PKing. While I agree the 'zombie survival' aspect needs improved on, the game is still far from completion.

I'm curious to see how they deal with Banditry honestly, I know Rocket has said he doesn't want to remove PvP but doesn't want to make it the centerpiece that it is now.

Poodger
Poodger like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@BuBsay You can't really balance it. The thing that makes this game fun is the banditry aspect of it. Some of my favorite moments in DayZ was approaching a town from a forest on top of a hill, and seeing a group of bandits in vehicles raiding it and killing other players, and I have to decide to sneak around, wait and watch, or snipe them down and reveal my position. It adds tension. The banditry isn't the problem, it is the endgame. Currently, there is nothing to do BUT go pvp once you have collected all the materials you need. Maybe if there were certain areas that required a group of people to enter, it would promote finding teammates. Upgradable weapons and vehicles, and in game money you collect as you keep playing that can be used to buy clothing to modify appearance could help the game have more to do at the end of the game instead of traipsing down to the main city to kill people once you have a military gun and some food. Players need incentives and goals to meet. When they do not have those things, they just resort to going on killing sprees. There is a clear difference between killing people you meet on the way to finding things for survival, and just hunting people down because you have nothing left to do in game.

BuBsay
BuBsay

@Poodger @BuBsay Well that's kind of my point that after you get gear you have nothing left to do but banditry or fighting bandits; which Rocket has said he doesn't want it to be that way, he wants people to have options.

@Poodger @BuBsay Add experience / skill system that can only be increased by killing zombies.

Make zombies actually drop loot.

Problem solved.

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow

@Poodger @BuBsay The bandit aspect should only be a part of the experience. There is no sense of community in the game. You can't trust anyone unless you go in with friends. I agree there should be goals and missions, but there needs to be a way to build community and a way to play co-op. Players who go into the game solo should have a way to group up with other instead of having to worry every single time they play about whether someone is going to outright kill them or if they're going to be able to go explore. It's perfectly acceptable to have tension from fear of other players, but to have a situation in which players constantly have to worry about a deathmatch scenario is ridiculous. We should have options. I stopped playing DayZ long ago because I got tired of playing solo and dealing with griefers. It was fine occassionally, but that's all it ended up being and I got tired of it. The game should try to mimic a more realistic simulation of a zombie apocalypse, not just use the zombie apocalypse as a backdrop for a PvP deathmatch between players.

WarZ comparisons and ripoff comments are not a bad way to go, troll-wise.  It's a bit obvious, though.

Suggesting console ports for anything Bohemia does concerning ARMA is much more effective, so thus:  I can't wait to buy this on PSN when it comes out for PS3 (and 360).

Which it will.

Just throwing it out here that im still confused about the whole WarZ and DayZ....

kpolicoff

@Danny_KickAzz DayZ was an Arma2 mod that was/is free. They have been planning to release a full stand alone game that you can purchase... the game is supposed to be very good, and a whole lot of fun... I don't have it because I don't have ARMA2. I'm waiting for the standalone... and their progress looks great.

The WarZ is a dispicable monstrosity of a product that was made my another company that has NOTHING to do with DayZ. They literally stole the idea and made a game that was suppose to have been similar to DayZ... but was an awful bucket of lies and theft. They released what some would call a beta release, promised MANY features that were not there, and their entire in game transaction mechanism was plain robbery. You almost had to purcahse in game weapons and items with real money, and then other players would kill you (usually players that hacked the game) and would take your weapons and items... that you just BOUGHT. you had 4 hours between spawns, unless you wanted to PAY to spawn again earlier. Again.. this game was a horrible piece of garbage.

DayZ is in no way releated the The WarZ. If you were ever in any way intersted in a zombie game like this... stay FAR away from The WarZ and either get arma2 and download the mod DayZ and/or wait for the DayZ standalone game to be released. It looks like they're doin some fantastic work on it, and I personally can't wait for it. I'll be buying DayZ on Day1. Ha. See what I did there?

Fugly graphics and clumsy animations. Look at dat PVP focus rather than surviving against zombies. AK47... HAHAHAHA. This is going to end up like their current crappy mod and Operation Racoon City, where zombies acts as a gimmick in the background as players PVP the hell out of each other.

Poodger
Poodger

@Mr_BillGates The pvp is what makes the game. Other survivors should be a source of tension and fear. Zombies are good and all, but at the end of the day, the true threat in a real zombie apocalypse would be looting, bandits and other humans. People would kill each other for weapons and food. And as far as the game goes, once you have certain supplies, zombies just aren't much of an issue anymore unless encountered in large numbers in a large open space or dead end. Other players add an element of realism and tension, as well as provide a challenge once the AI controlled bullet fodder is no longer a threat.

Pierce_Sparrow
Pierce_Sparrow like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@Poodger @Mr_BillGates Yes, but that should come from an ACTUAL need to survive, not just going into the game to kill people. There is a difference between actually replicating a zombie apocalypse by presenting a situation in which two people might have to kill each other and simply creating a deathmatch arena with zombies in the background. This game is currently the latter. The zombie apocalypse scenario is inconsequential because all it is is players finding guns and shooting each other, sans the whole survival aspect.

@Mr_BillGates Hmmm.. judging an unreleased game's gameplay by looking at a video showing off some of the new mechanics of the game that doesn't actually show how the game will play. Gee, are you psychic?
