Gearbox hints that upcoming expansion will include a sixth playable character.
Gearbox Software has teased that a new expansion for Borderlands 2 will add a sixth playable character to the action shooter, Polygon reports. Gearbox divulged the news during a presentation at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, this weekend through a teaser trailer.
"Deep beneath Pandora an experiment has escaped. Bandits beware, a new Vault Hunter is coming. More mayhem awaits," the trailer said.
The trailer shows the character crushing enemies with great physical strength, suggesting it may be melee-focused. This matches up with comments from Gearbox developers Jonathan Hemingway and Matthew Armstrong, who said they wished Borderlands 2 had a melee character.
The $30 Borderlands 2 Season Pass includes four expansions, three of which (Captain Scarlett and Her Captain's Booty, Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, and Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt) have already been released.
The fourth and final Borderlands 2 expansion will launch by June 2013.
It is not clear if the rumored melee character DLC is part of the four core Borderlands 2 expansions or if it will be released on its own, similar to the $10 Mechromancer class.
A level cap increase, Gearbox. That's what we want, that's all we want. Gives us an incentive to actually play it again.
@CamoBullo That and fix the freaking drop ratios so we feel like grinding that one boss you LOCK daily so we want to come back and play. There is nothing more annoying then killing one enemy 300 times, and not getting anything for it.
I put off buying Borderlands 2 to wait for a GOTY edition. Made the misake of buying the first borderlands, a week or 2 before the GOTY came out
Meh, I did the same thing and it kinda evened out, really, because by then the original game was cheap, like 20 bucks. Add the cost of the DLC and it was pretty much a wash (I think I got a sale on that too, but I honestly don't remember). I guess it's nice to not have the DLC living on your hard drive, but other than that...
When the hell is Gearbox gonna raise the level cap? It's becoming pointless to keep releasing DLC when most people hit the cap playing the main campaign on True Vault Hunter mode.
You can see my comment below about it. Basically the level cap is going to be raised very soon.
Meh. Got bored of this game pretty fast. It had a lot more content which is awesome but it still felt too much like the first one. I wish they would have built off of the gun customization more and allowed us to craft our own weapons with the different pieces. THAT would have been awesome.
@WingChopMasta I would of loved a upgraded loot storage area. so much loot and not enough storage? wtf?
Oh God yes. First of all, only four slots for the shared stash is just plain stupid. It's faster to just come in with your other character on a second controller and change weapons that way than it is to put items in four at a time to the shared stash and load your characters separately. I have eight characters, people -- four slots in the shared stash is not enough.
And yeah, the character stashes could stand to be bigger, too. They were a lot bigger in BL1 (your backpack was bigger, too). I mean, I could understand space being limited if these were cloud saves on Gearbox's servers, but these are saves on our local machines, and I don't really care how big they are. Why not up the limit? Seriously, I see no reason at all why not.
Yeah, but the problem with customizing your guns is that it tends to remove the carrot-on-a-stick factor that makes these type of loot games rewarding. If you could eventually construct all your guns with the exact pieces you wanted, then all drops become worthless, and there's little reason to keep on playing. At least as it is there's always the possibility that something will drop that's slightly better than what you have.
@AtheistPreacher @WingChopMasta Finding good guns is one thing but if you could find all sorts of different pieces with different stats you would have no problems finding awesome loot. If they so that you cant break down a gun you created once you created it then you would never be happy with just one gun for too long because you would be finding new and more powerful pieces with stats and elemental effects..not to mention have rare gun pieces you could build into a set. Like most rpg's do with armor.
Its not like the loot sucked in BL I just thought that it would be even more insane if we could have the depth of crafting our own guns. Showing off your own crazy creations is a pretty big carrot on a stick if you ask me.
Eh, maybe it could work, but I still tend to be suspicious of systems like this. You can very easily create a whole new set of problems. There's a reason games like Borderlands, Dead Island, and Diablo haven't gone there. Heck, Blizzard took out that third artisan before release because she was breaking the game doing just the kind of things you're suggesting.
FYI, Gearbox has said any DLC that raises the level cap or adds a new character will not be included in the season pass.
So best guess is that this next DLC will include the level cap rise, a new character, and possibly new areas/missions, and will probably have a $10-20 price point, while the fourth DLC for the season pass will be developed afterwards. And given that the fourth season pass DLC is promised by June, I would be very very surprised if this level cap/new character DLC isn't out by mid-April. Probably it'll be out sooner.
I honestly believe DLC's are a waste of time because it's a very sorry attempt at bringing back gamers after they are done with the game. Especially when you've got the likes of other amazing games coming out that have overshadowed games at that time. BL2 was amazing AT THAT TIME but to put out a DLC after 6 odd months especially after the midst of games like TR, Assassin's creed, Metal gear, DMC etc. is just a waste of gearbox resources.
@C0v3rtUnis0l Not everyone is a hoppy AHAD freak that gets bored of a game every 2 months. People like when their favorite games get new content. It keeps it fresh. It is not a sorry attempt at all. It is a great attempt. Its better than not doing anything for people that enjoy the game but want some more from it. Then have to wait a year or more for the new game to come out.
I have to disagree.
First of all, your capitalization of "at that time" seems to suggest that you think B2 is already obsolete, and/or that gamers are too distracted by shiny new things to go back to it. I don't think either of these things is the case. A good game is a good game, and the idea that after six months everyone will be done playing it seems strange. Speaking for myself, the only game of the ones you've listed that I bought was DMC, but it's so different from Borderlands that there's no way DMC could replace it. And new DLC may indeed provide incentive to go back. In fact, I've recently gotten back to B2 in just the past week, and part of the reason was the two DLCs I hadn't played yet (I had only done Pirate's Booty).
And hey, at least Gearbox is producing robust new content *after release* rather than releasing half a game and then stringing everyone along with DLC that should have been included in the game to begin with. To me, that's DLC done right.
@C0v3rtUnis0l I am glad they bring out DLC otherwise I would be done with this game and I don't want to be done with it. I would buy new content years from now if they kept releasing it.
@C0v3rtUnis0l I would agree with you, but sometimes some dlcs add something that was really missing in the game at start, so sometimes they can be worth the money
this is really terrible they dont reaise the lvl cap release all this dlc and this is there final dlc they lied about the game they said there would be dlc about the old charatcer from bl1 gearbox what was going through your head...
@DemoKnight10656 This is not the final DLC, there is one more campaign pack before this season ends. Also rumor they might be doing another season, which would mean four more campaign packs.
It better be free because I payed for the season pass which gives access to all future DLC for Borderlands 2 Mofo's
@jameson425 lol, I had read "...gives access to all failure DLC for Borderlands 2..."
Well the season pass didn't pay for the Mechromancer (unless you pre-ordered the game you got that free). It doesn't pay for the collectors edition pack or slaughterdome (again unless pre-ordered) and does not pay for the multiple skin packs either. The Season Pass was meant to get you all 4 "campaign-based" DLC for $30 (a $10 savings).
I got the game on sale, so added with the seasons pass, I got the game for just under regular price (4-pack steam sale + season pass). 4-pack was essentially 4 games for the price of 3, so me and friends got a discount there, then another $30 for pass.
But, I'd rather get a new campaign DLC than have this new character be the option (season pass said campaign DLC, not characters). I'd rather play new missions and get new cool loot then have to replay the game yet again with a new character (something I've down already with all 4 characters and gets tiresome).
Having said all that...I'm still waiting for a level cap increase. Havent finished Sir Hammerlocks expansion cause I just reached L50, and knowing its coming, eventually, I wouldnt't like to see my experience go to waste :)
Or Gamespot could read what Gearbox has said from the beginning, The Season Pass is for 4 DLC Campaigns and does not include any new classes, so we can stop asking "Hey, is such and such part of the Season Pass (where such and such is not a DLC Campaign)"
I loved the Beserker in the first game, so I hope it is similiar. I have to say the DLC's have been less good than they were for the first game, but the core game is just leaps and bounds better.
I wonder if it'll be Zombie Roland. Lilith will be all "Oh noes. We have to save him and put him to rest, and the only way to do that is to get him a legendary weapon from a bad-ass-whatever-invincible guy, and following through this story will help us progress." Lol. I don't know, but I wouldn't put it past them.
i got rid of this game a long time ago and sure glad i did i had the season pass and everything even bought limited edition but they sold out
What the hell is the point of a melee focused character in a game which proudly boasts of billions of guns?
@DoomZaW Have you seen how powerful melee Zer0s are?! They make perfect sense when played correctly.
@jamesbigmac He's talking about a melee character on a game with a billion guns doesn't fit in the concept, no one said melee was lacking or unfun. Plus, Zero is already a melee character.
@Kantham But they have guns and weapons specifically designed for melee... How can you say that it doesn't fit?
You guys have to stop teasing DLC. DLC doesn't like being teased. DLC will strike you if you keep teasing it.
" who said they wished Borderlands 2 had a melee character."
As if zero wasn't melee enough. However, if you want to add melee characters, I suggest that you add a variety of melee weapons first.
