If Nintendo want to sell their system they need a big 3D Mario game out that is able to match the brilliance of Mario 64 or Galaxy.
The latest 3D Mario game will be playable at E3 2013, with new Mario Kart and Yoshi games also announced by Nintendo.
Nintendo will unveil its successor to Super Mario Galaxy 2 at this year's E3.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced the Wii U game's existence today as part of Nintendo Direct, but did not go into any more specifics other than to say it would be playable at E3 2013, which will be held this year June 11-13.
Iwata did mention that it would be Nintendo EAD Tokyo--the team who made Mario Galaxy, Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D Land--handling development of the new 3D Mario.
During the Nintendo Direct presentation Iwata confirmed that Nintendo would also be showing new Mario Kart and Smash Bros. titles at E3 2013, and that Nintendo was already hard at work on a new Wii U Zelda.
A new Wii U Yoshi game was also shown, developed by the same team behind Kirby's Epic Yarn and using the same patchwork art style. Atlus also unveiled its crossover title Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem.
In addition, a new Wii U game from Monolith Soft (Xenoblade) was teased. It is being developed under the direction of Tetsuya Takahashi.
Mario's mainline 3D series has produced some of the most celebrated platformers in gaming history: Super Mario 64 in 1996 for the N64, Super Mario Sunshine for the Gamecube in 2002 and Mario Galaxy and its sequel in 2007 and 2010.
The other current Mario series - New Super Mario Bros, which is developed by a different group at Nintendo EAD - came under some criticism in 2012 after Nintendo released two entries into the series in one year; New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U.
please be more like sunshine and 64, and make sure it is not rushed like the last two new super mario bros games
Nintendo I will freaking love for you guys to created a remix of Super Mario 64 called
"Super Mario 64 U" just like how you guys recreated mario 64 on the ds. Please do it for all nintendo fans!
It wont be Super Mario Galaxy 3 I think. Im willing to beat they go back to basics and make it something built in the world....
They should just make the whole game open world like a Metroid prime (not the game being like metroid prime in anyway, just designed on the outlay)
Mario gets a Super Fire ball ability.. Ice World is unlocked when he shoots the ice barrier..
I thought Mario was a Plumber or something like that. Why now he could travel anywhere??
Geez, I'd rather play Marion in Nintendo Version. I need only 4 buttons! XD
mario is what made me spend the cash on the wii u , still a console fan
hell i bought a wii and only purchased 3 games for it !! call me stupid i still believe in the dream !!
i'm hoping for a return to something more along the lines of Super Mario 64 which means a few things to me:
1. Not Galaxy 3 (overkill for me, we need a fresh theme)
2. Return of a larger over world: No small space station or mario head 'spaceship'....I want a bigger world to explore with stuff to do in it, and sections to unlock as you progress the way 64 did it with the castle & the way sunshine did it with delfino isle. Some sort of open world to explore & interact with would be great.
3. New gameplay: 64 was obviously a complete revolution. Sunshine expanded on that. Galaxy expanded on that. More expansion...NEW power ups! Sunshine had FLUDD and different nozzles, and yoshi. Galaxy 1 & 2 had cool hat power ups & gravity based levels...We need new power ups and new level designs. I'm not worried about that though.
4. A somewhat better story. Honestly Mario 64 was just classic, save peach from bowser who took over the castle, but it worked beautifully. Sunshine's story was actually somewhat interesting involving a larger cast, the isle residents, and more than just simply peach being kidnapped. Give me a little bit more reason to explore the world and play through the levels. Give incentive to get more than the minimum required stars too. I felt like in the galaxy games there wasn't too much incentive & i simply beat them with the required stars.
Kewl, new mario game. I wish they would upscale wii games though cause while galaxy 1 and 2 were fun, the resolution they ran at really smeared the picture on large tv's making it hard to play.
@Phazevariance If money is no issue, a gaming rig with a Wii and PS2 emulator (dolphin emulator and PCSX2 respectively) will send you to upscale heaven. It does a better job than most HD remakes because it polishes the cut scenes too.
say what you want ppl but im always xcited as hell when a new mario is in the works, yeah there have been alot of mario games lately but hey hes mario and when the quality of the games can actually be compared to c.o.d. and not the quantity then yes mario would most definitely need a vacation but until that day give me some mario games!
I was seriously disappointed when Super Mario Wii U didn't support 3D TV's. Can't the hardware do this. Seriously... Makes the 3DS more powerful than the Wii U...
Is this going to be a fully 3D game to be played on a 3D TV? Or is it just going to be a 3D game played on a flat 2D TV like Galaxy? I'd like a Full 3D TV Mario Game.
I can handle a third Mario Galaxy, pretty much enjoyed the first 2 games. However, the 1st SMG I played was the 2nd and then I got the 1st. The 1st one is really the best, it's fresh, full of ideas and very cool. The 2nd, which I'm playing again, it's also great but... it really feels like an extension of the 1st, like, Nintendo could have made the lenghtiest Mario game ever by merging the two...
Aren't there already a couple of Mario games for the Wii U, or at least one? And it's only been 2 months, Jesus Christ Nintendo. I mean continue the Mario, but you don't need 2 a year with all the Mario Party games and whatnot added to that. It's way too much.
It better have new innovative things and have the interesting dream-like world of Super Mario 64. Maybe throw in an open world to explore. Plus, minimize the use of any sort of spoken dialogue. That really added to the charm of Mario 64. The only spoken dialogue on there was the beginning with Princess Peach.
If this turns out good, I'll be wanting a Wii U really badly just to play this and, hopefully, whatever the next Metroid game is. Maybe the next Legend of Zelda game...
I wish this would be a Mario 64 type game with a large open 3d overworld with paintings and such to jump into to enter the levels. Man that game was so much fun. PLEASE NINTENDO PLEASE.
Maybe we'll get lucky and it will be a huge open environment similar to a zelda game with towns and such with all the different inhabitants, the mushroom kingdom all the villages and such...man that would be amazing...there's still so much that can be done with this franchise. I pray every generation, but it never comes to fruition....I CAN DREAM THOUGH.
It won't necessarily be Super Mario Galaxy 3. It could be Super Mario Sunshine 2, or something entirely new.
I think the fact that they didn't mention the Galaxy franchise at all would seem to indicate that its time to move away from that franchise however fantastic its been. A brand new Mario from Nintendo... yes please oh very much yes please...
@DarthLod Good luck on missing one of, if not the most, creative series of all time in terms of level design and game play. Plus one of the most fun.
If you've actually played the 3D Mario games, you'll know they actually change a lot with each release. The 2D games...not so much, but they still do.
@DarthLod have fun missing on one of the greatest franchises ever made.
3D Mario usually comes out once every 5 years.... so yeah. I think it is great they are working on a new one!
He is right though Nintendo should stop releasing so many sequels to CoD, Madden, Sonic, GTA, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur... god.
What is the deal with Nintendo continuously releasing updates to these series every year, or even more than once in a year?
they've had more than you think! Obviously when you're talking numbered entries to the series, then we're only on the forth (with the fifth on the horizon), but there have been a fair few other gta games outside of the main series! and when you look at the fact GTA started in the mid-late 90's (97?), its had quite a few games out in that time :)
@Drubee GTA has a lot of sequels? Really?
@DarthLod its always been like that on Nintendo platforms though...
