Neversoft staffing up for 'action shooter'

Guitar Hero developer puts out job reqs for single-, multiplayer designers, scripters to work on "realistic" new project.

When Activision took its internal studio Neversoft off the Tony Hawk franchise in early 2009, the move was understandable, considering the influx of Guitar Hero games the outfit had been tasked with developing. However, early this year, Activision again lightened Neversoft's work load, honing its slate of Guitar Hero games to just one in 2010, the recently announced Warriors of Rock.

As to the question of where Neversoft would next be channeling its resources, it would appear as if Activision has given the green light to a new shooter at the studio. As spotted by Internet sleuthing blog Superannuation, recent Neversoft job listings indicate that the studio is gearing up for a "new action shooter game." Neversoft has posted a number of positions for the project, including a Senior Designer, Lead Multiplayer Designer, Level Designer, and Scripter.

The job listings heavily emphasize that the game will feature both single- and multiplayer components. Further, Neversoft's project will apparently carry a "realistic" aesthetic, though no other context for this design philosophy was teased.

Neversoft isn't a stranger to the shooter genre. The studio shipped Gun as an Xbox 360 launch title in 2005, though the action-heavy Western shooter fared better with critics on the original Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, and PC. A revival of that franchise isn't out of the question, considering the recent success of Rockstar San Diego's similarly themed Red Dead Redemption, which Take-Two said yesterday had sold 5 million units in less than a month.

Alternatively, Neversoft could be the latest studio tapped to work on the Call of Duty franchise, which Activision has now segmented off into its own business unit. Currently, there are at least four Call of Duty-branded games in the works, including Treyarch's Black Ops and Sledgehammer's action adventure, as well as the possible Infinity Ward-developed Modern Warfare 3 and a massively multiplayer online title in the works for Asia. Raven Software has also been attached to the franchise.

Activision has also signaled its intent to expand the franchise further. In May, the publisher registered domain names for a number of potential Call of Duty titles, ranging from Call of Duty: Future Warfare to Advanced Warfare and Space Warfare.

I get it a modern shooter, where everyone is on a skateboard. Wooohooooo!!!

Blade8Aus 5 pts

@parrot_of_adun Yes, but a perspective is different to a genre. Well I have heard that before. Yes, I do know what second person is.

parrot_of_adun 113 pts

@Blade8Aus ...I've never once heard/read that. Ever. I believe the common term there is "side-scroller". Whether or not a few people think that, a 2nd person perspective in a videogame would imply the game is viewed through the perspective of a character other than the player character, specifically a character or character-type the player interacts with as a basis for gameplay.

green_dominator 5 pts

I thought Activision shut Neversoft down..... Whatever, they better not be trying to release another GUN, the game sucked and it's tacky to even think they can take down Red Dead Redemption or even live up to a half of what that game is....Activision = Fail......

Blade8Aus 5 pts

@parrot_of_adun when you say 2nd person perspective in video games it normally means that it's 2d and the camera follows the player from the side. like Metal Slug for example.

cjasko94 5 pts

No! I want Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5!... or Gun 2 :)

burnupblade 5 pts

If they do it right and go with a some what wacky wild west(a twisted tale similar to the movie wild wild west). Than ill probably think about it. Gun i loved to play. Its practically a beta version of RDR.

King_Gamer19 5 pts

@roosteraxe1 Read Dead Revolver was first but it wasn't a sandbox game like Gun was. So yeah Gun was made probably to be what everyone wanted Red Dead Revolver to be which was a sandbox game

killing_spree20 5 pts

Its probably going to be Gun 2, I mean it is Activision after all... "Oh look, western games are cool again...don't we have a western IP? We do? Get someone on it. Now! I want 3 sequals by next week!"

Dynamo11 5 pts

Gun 2 please, then again I don't think anything can knock RDR off its throne

MC_Bally_Who 5 pts

Awesome lets make a comeback by making a style of game that has been done a million times in the last few years. Am I the only person bored of 'realistic action shooters'?

jimbo913 5 pts

I thought this might be gun. If it is Gun 2, they better bring it. RDR set the bar pretty high for an old western. I had really enjoyed Gun back in the day. After playing RDR, I decided to put it in to see how it compared. They got a lot of work to do.

Sagacious_Tien 5 pts

They could also be making a new Spiderman game. They made a few good ones before striking gold with the original Tony Hawk games. A new GUN though would be very welcome.

roosteraxe1 14 pts

@King_Gamer19 I think Gun was their answer to the original Red Dead Revolver too. Not completely sure which came out first, but I'm pretty sure it was Read Dead.

King_Gamer19 5 pts

What they did change the FPS with COD:MW. Which by the way they didn't want to do they wanted to stay in the WW2 era. So when that worked they go & fire the people who make them something new & better......LOL!!!......Once agaian DUMBA**ES

King_Gamer19 5 pts

WOW! Activision sucks. They can't never do anything original they made the True Crime series to answer for GTA they did. They don't do anything new for the Guitar Hero series until Harmonix does it first & better just {just look at RB3}. Now they might bring back Gun because of RDR because they couldn't think of anything new to do with it.....LOL!!!....What dumba**es

roosteraxe1 14 pts

Maybe we're all looking at this wrong. Maybe the title will actually be "Action Shooter". followed by "Action Shooter 2-5". All to be released next year.

roosteraxe1 14 pts

Well, there's a 99% chance that this will be a game from a previous series seeing as Activision doesn't believe in original games anymore. The smart bet would be another Gun game what with RDR's popularity, but given their recent obsession with destroying Call of Duty it's more likey going to be the 5th COD game their working on. Can't have too much Call of Duty you know. Gotta ruin that franchise before the next generation of systems comes out.

nickythenewt21 8 pts

Instead of guns, we should shoot lasers out of guitars. Orange, green, yellow, red and blue lasers. And...and you'll have to shoot the lasers on-rhythm with the song. While we're at it, why don't we add drums? Drums could be like rocket launchers. And vocals! It'd be innovative to control a game with your voice, right? This would be a great game, I swear.

Activision THE FARMER Neversoft THE OLD COW WORKING ON A NEW SHOOTER GAME

Willceace 5 pts

They should rename the company "Nevergonnabeabletotoptonyhawks1" or simply "Nevergood"

parrot_of_adun 113 pts

@Blade8Aus More like horrible concept. Can you really imagine playing a shooter from the perspective of you enemies?

Glade_Gnarr 5 pts

I just realized almost half of my collection are shooters this gen, I want my gamecube back, the only shooters I had back the were timesplitters and resident evil.

Blade8Aus 5 pts

@feliscele a realistic 2nd person shooter? interesting concept...

Auction_Sniper 8 pts

I wonder if it will run on the Tony Hawk engine....

iowastate 52 pts

it will be very hard to equal Grand Theft: Horsie...I mean Red Dead Redemption. Gun was fun for a short time but did not live up to it's promise. Do we really need another CoD game? there is so little difference between all the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor as it is why bother with another. How about Call of Duty: Paintball. at least that would not be the same as all the others:lol:

dstv 18 pts

....lets wait and see...probably wont be better than RDR though

sithodah 5 pts

UPDATE: the new Neversoft game has been given a name. "Call of duty: super-duper warfare" And it's sequel "Call of Duty: really good warfare" And the asian mmo adaption? "Call of Duty: Starcraft warfare" Yeah that last one is gonna be popular.

redcloud12345 5 pts

gun was one of the most disappointing let downs of my gaming experience. low production values, a forgettable main character, retardedly short and had no replay value what so ever.

gamer082009 5 pts

Well me being a fan of shooters anything that's actually good is welcomed. I'll try to ignore that it's being done by Neversoft

Bigbudd0045 8 pts

i was a big fan of gun, not enough people played it in my opinion. It was a solid B - B+ effort, not perfect and needed some tuning, but a positive start to a new franchise (that never continued). I dont see a need for another one at this point, Red Dead is so damn good. How about a pirate game, i dont feel that anyone has really nailed that one yet. of course that wouldnt realy be a shooter....so i got nothing.

Gelugon_baat 713 pts

*Bleah* Yet another shooter. I swear, the games markets (especially the consoles') are choked to suffocation with this genre nowadays. There had been so many good shooters such that the par of standards and quality would have been raised so high as to be virtually unachievable without inhuman dedication. Why can't Activision realize this?

GodsPoison 9 pts

How about a game about.....Painting? yknow like.....uhm....Aw hell gimme a gun i need too go shoot something!

COSMICX815 5 pts

@ Dezuria completely agree, maybe something new besides Gun 2? IDk?

Cwagmire21 10 pts

I've "never" been impressed with what Neversoft has done. See GS, I can be punny too. Lol

berto64 18 pts

all this shooter games makes me wanna sleep, yawn

MangaMaster17 5 pts

Does anyone even give a crap? I sure don't. They need to start looking in the originality department for once, because "Realistic Shooter" does'nt mean nothing these days.

feliscele 6 pts

Let's try a 2nd person shooter...that'd be cool.

Dezuria 19 pts

I wouldn't want to be Neversoft if it's Gun 2. Following Red Dead Redemption won't be easy.

xXFr34k_0uTXx 7 pts

I actually feel anxious when an innovative and original game is announced. Original in a sense of "what is your goal?", and "how am I going to overcome the obstacles?" However, here is a shooter. Simple, kill your enemy and kick ***. Generally a single-player campaign and also online compatibility with a few game modes to select from. In the end, this will probably end up on top of a stack of other hyped shooter games I have previously purchased.

Barighm 5 pts

Gah...no more shooters! When will these marketing executives realize the success of a really good shooter is the result of the game being VERY GOOD!! Not because it's hot, or a fad, or the current trend or anything like that. Stupid execs wanting a piece of the pie...
