Need for Speed Rivals announced for Xbox One, PS4, and current-gen

Next-gen versions remain undated, but 360, PS3, and PC versions of this year's Need for Speed will be released on November 19.

EA has announced Need for Speed Rivals, saying that the next entry in the long-running racing series will launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 19.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are in development, but are not yet dated.

Need for Speed Rivals is being developed by the new, Gothenberg-based studio Ghost Games. The game will use DICE's Frostbite 3 engine, EA says.

The game blends elements of Criterion Games' Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, offering up a large open world--dubbed Redview County--and allowing players to take the role of a racer or a police officer. Cars are reported to be customisable, and Ghost Games claims the game will seamlessly integrate both its single-player and multiplayer gameplay with a feature called AllDrive, which lets players drop in and out of each other's worlds.

The series' social tracking service Autolog will also return.

Need for Speed's almost 20-year history has seen multiple developers handle the game, and the series has seen both ups and downs. Black Box's Need for Speed: The Run, which was developed using the Frostbite 2 engine, was panned upon its release in 2011. Criterion Games' 2012 Need for Speed: Most Wanted and 2010 Hot Pursuit were both well received, however, and their creative director, Craig Sullivan, has joined the team at Ghost Games to oversee development of Rivals.

A Need for Speed movie is also in the works.

So this is pretty much like Need for Speed World with better graphics and a price tag, that's exactly what I wanted, thank god there's no good campaign or anything singleplayer, that absolutely ruined Most Wanted, Underground, Hot Pursuit and most other non F2P Need for Speed games!

Looks like we will have one extra year for the current gen then we have to switch to the new gen and get the new games.

I hope it doesn't become another Burnout clone just like Most Wanted 2012..

Plus we want a story mode as well.

Was I the only one displeased by what Criterion did to NFS? To me NFS was always arcade racing and never something I'd for for if I was in the mood for simulation driving; there are several titles that do it a lot better but when you wanted to drive like you were in a pinball machine NFS was the best and now I feel like that was lost with Criterion's "Let's make each tiny hit hugely dramatic and completely wipe out your need for speed" approach (I apologise for the pun).

NFS is an awesome franchise and I'm sure this will have even more to offer than its predecessors!!

I would like to see this game turn out like a mix from Underground and the first Most Wanted that came out for the Xbox360. I am playing the new Most Wanted now on the PS3 and the only things that really bother me about that game are that the world feels empty, unlike something like burnout paradise, the other is that they put all the DLC cars in the world already, every time I see a car I get excited just to find out I can't drive that car because I don't have the DLC and not going to buy because it's overpriced. I will keep my eye on this game and looking forward to see gameplay for next gen consoles at E3.

Unless something drastic, in a good way, has changed; the asking price will have to drop for me to pick a copy of this up.

It's going to take a lot dev diaries and gameplay footage to convince me this is worth while.

Next-gen versions of course remain undated because the next-gen consoles don't have release dates yet.

High likelihood that this is a launch title though.

i hope it won't play like Burnout again. Not that i hate Burnout but it's just sad to see one of the best racing game franchise lost its identity. Bring back the old feeling of the original Hot Pursuit, Underground, Most Wanted, and Carbon!

Ewww a port to next gen. I dislike the transition period in the industry, as quality usually suffers on both ends. Lets hope this one turns out good on all platforms.

After the disaster called NFS Most Wanted 2012 I will wait before I buy any NFS game.

I bought Need for Speed Most Wanted last year and I can say I am disappointed...  It is like an inferior version of Burnout Paradise.  Also the frame rate is awful.

BelaidKL

Are Need For Speed games still worth buying? Haven't owned one since the God awful Shift... Was just curious if the quality has gone up since? (Most Wanted style)

mateyman

@BelaidKL I personally enjoyed Most Wanted's  driving style and races. I thought that was all really exciting. There was a lack of content though, and plenty of other problems that would cause me to suggest avoiding it. I personally would just wait to see how this next one turns out, but if you must get one, I thought hot pursuit was really good.

So EA is giving the PC the same version as the Xbox 360 and PS3 just like Fifa, while they make Next-Gen versions for Xbox One and PS4, LOL

You know Ubisoft is doing the same with Assassins Creed IV, PC will get the current gen version

Damn it.  EA did the same thing last time.  360 got the next gen Most Wanted, and pc users got screwed.

I want you to hold off on the pc version, and make it better than the next gen console ones.

PS4_Next_Gen

@DrKill09 Why should the PC platform get special treatment?

Forcecaster
Forcecaster

@PS4_Next_Gen @DrKill09 Because it is nextgen. The game will be released for the next gen consoles, so there is no reason to pull back the PC version because of the current gen consoles.

I couldn't enjoy the last NFS tbh and Iam someone who has played almost every NFS there is.

It didn't feel fluid and smooth, atleast on the console versions and I hated the handling, it was like there always an 'easy-mode' on to steer my vehicle correctly automatically.

Didn't feel like I had control over it even though the game's presentation was top notch, I just couldn't get myself to play it. Maybe better on the PC but this was nowhere near Hot Pursuit , or Burnout Paradise.

krystyla

i dont get why they do so many AAA titles now its just gonna limit them because they still produce current gen. I mean when will we have the first gta for next gen exclusively

sLAUGHTERhouse0
sLAUGHTERhouse0 like.author.displayName 1 Like

@krystyla Given that GTA5 has been in development well before the PS4/X1, why would they suddenly make it exclusively for next gen when there is such a massive install base for current gen? You'll get a GTA for next gen, when there is an install base for it. From a business standpoint, this makes sense.

I loved NFS:MW the original. I did play though the new one and unlocked everything in SP. It was not anywhere as good as the original. It was still enjoyable in certain aspects.

All I really wanted though was a true sequel :(
