[UPDATE] Asian online game giants reportedly in talks to acquire Half-Life house; NCSoft representative squashes speculation, saying, "There are no grounds to this rumor"; Valve adds, "Total rumor."
[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a NCSoft representative told GameSpot, "There are no grounds to this rumor." Additionally, a Valve spokesperson said, "Total rumor."
The original story follows below
Two of Asia's biggest online game companies, Nexon and NCSoft, are reportedly in talks to acquire Half-Life and Counter-Strike developer Valve Software. The news comes from a Korean news report at JoongAng Ilbo (translated by Polygon), which claims top executives at both companies met in Hawaii recently to discuss a deal.
The report cites an anonymous industry source, which claims NCSoft CEO Jin Kim and Nexon CEO Kim Jung-ju are discussing moving stock and selling off real estate to gather the cash necessary to purchase Valve.
A price tag for the company was not mentioned, but a recent Forbes report estimated Valve's worth at $3 billion, half of which belongs to Gabe Newell.
Nexon is currently licensing Valve's Counter-Strike brand for its microtransaction-based Counter-Strike Online in Asian markets. A sequel is also in development. Additionally, numerous Nexon games, like Maple Story and Combat Arms, are presently available through Valve's digital distribution hub Steam.
Valve is an independently held company, and has reportedly fielded buyout offers before. A recent New York Times report suggested big-time United States publisher Electronic Arts was interested in purchasing the company for $1 billion. Newell, however, said he would rather see Valve disintegrate than be bought out.
A Nexon representative declined to comment on the rumor. Spokespersons from Valve and NCSoft were not immediately available.
Valve is a private corporation, so they do not disclose their revenue. EA, Nexon and NCsoft beware . One day Valve on sales will reveal? And then they will buy them all EA , NEXON vą NCsoft . Or this is just a fake rumor
if valve gets brought out, thats the end of the glory days... they will be turned into blizzard activision. half life 3 will be released straight away with no love or creativity to capitalize on the hype... itll be the next duke nukem forever if valve get brought out
If this is really true, I'll laugh really hard when EA suddenly buys NCSoft in the future. Evil finds its way around. If Newell was serious with his comment about the EA proposal last time, he better not sell to anyone at all. Because there is a high chance that any game related company would end up being bought up by EA.
Newell and his team seem to still have plenty of gas in the tank to continue a trajectory of growth, so I doubt it makes sense for them to sell. Usually you sell when you think you've peaked or desperately need more cash to continue growing.
That's naive thinking right there. People often (but not always) sell to cash out. Gabe Newell owns 50% of Valve stock. And if Valve is really worth 3 billion, Newell technically owns 1.5 bil on paper. Now, owning 1.5 bil on paper isn't the same as owning 1.5 bil cash. When another company offers to buy your company, and your part of the stock, that's basically getting cash value for what you previously only own only on paper. You're getting your retirement fund early.
Valve will not be bought. They rejected EA, they will reject everyone else. I think they have very ambitious plans for the future also...
Thank Christ for that update. I wouldn't see Valve ever being bought out anyways. Especially by a company like NCSoft. Screw them.
Anonymous inside source indicates anonymous inside sources are often a gimmick to legitimize a lazy journalist with no other story on a slow news day (in reference to the original, not Eddie).
Gabe has always said he'd never sell the studio out. I'm gunna stick by that statement. Valve are just doing too well to want to EVER be sold out to some Asian devs. What a load of rubbish.
As a Korean, I have to say that Nexon is no different to EA in terms of its tyrannical approach to games industry... While EA just prices their games high, Nexon makes their online games nearly impossible to play unless you buy some micro-transactions... PLEASE.. Just leave Valve alone... :(
Considering what Gabe Newell had recently said responding to the story of Valve being bought out by EA, I'd say this has bogus written right under the headlines !!!
No one can buy Valve out!! The creators are visionaries, and I don't think they will sell their company for $$$
Unlike so many other developers Valve has too much class to ever become corporate sell outs like some other *cough* bioware

Maybe do a little research before copy pasting rumors from other sites. I can't believe this guy gets paid to post garbage like this article.
After the EA and NCsoft / Nexon news to buy Valve, who's in for next weeks "news" ?
Aunt Fannys crispy chicken hut to buy Valve ?
Nah, I think that thanks to hard journalism going on these copy-paste rumors should stop soon, right ? right ? right.
Wasn't there an article a couple of weeks ago or so about how Valve wouldn't sell out? So why in the hell is this even out, and why in the hell would anyone expect us to believe it? Oh, Eddie Makuch wrote it....
Not going to happen. Gabe would rather burn his company to the ground than sell it to another corporation
Selling Valve to ea games is like making downloadable content for half life 2: episode 3, buying heroes in DotA 2, and selling out the culture of gaming.
the day gabe sells out is the day all hope for humanity is lost. it will be our judgement day, and that day will never come.
Wasn't there JUST a rumor about another company trying to buy Valve? Why do I get the feeling this time next week GS will have the headline, "Joe, that guy across the street, to buy Valve?" this will of course be followed up by a required update from GS when they do actually decide to check the sources and say its total rumor.
LOL HAHA Good Joke Gamespot you made me Rofl 2 Time :D ! Didn't i read 2 weeks ago about Ea Triyng to Buy Valve :D ? Gabe made it clear" It rather Let Valve Disintegrate" rather fall to the EA Dark Side! Lord Gaben would laugh in their face, then stomp on Nexon's shitty free to play crapware while Nexon's CEO cries. Then he would bask on his throne of pizza boxes and Pepsi cans while beautiful women fan him as he plays video games, feeling victorious after another buyout averted :D +10Man :D
I think Valve has made it clear they wont be bought out, so why are articles like this even news at all?
@jedediahpelland Mark Zuckerberg had no intention of selling Facebook back in the early days when it had an offer for a billion dollars. But the offer caused problems because he was forced to pony up cash to buy out every shareholder who wanted at the offer rate. Gabe Newell will have a serious problem if he gets a high enough offer that makes it impossible to buyout the minority shareholders.
