Naughty Dog: Last of Us multiplayer is 'best ever conceived'

Lead artist talks up multiplayer mode for upcoming action game as development comes to a close.

Naughty Dog lead artist Nate Wells has taken to Twitter to talk up the multiplayer mode for The Last of Us, which the developer has been silent on outside of confirming its existence.

"I wish I could appropriately prepare you people for [The Last of Us]," he said. "But even if I were allowed to, I can't. And I really can't prepare you for the best [multiplayer] ever conceived."

Naughty Dog confirmed a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us in December, but has yet to give any details about it, though some of this information leaked earlier this month.

The news comes as Naughty Dog wrapped up development on The Last of Us, meaning the game has "gone gold" and is now headed to factories for mass production.

Co-president Christophe Balestra revealed the news on Instagram, posting a picture of the game's "makedisc ship final" code. Creative director Neil Druckmann echoed this sentiment, writing on Twitter "pencils down."

The Last of Us was originally scheduled to launch on May 7, but was delayed in February to a June 14 global launch exclusively for the PlayStation 3.

Gamers won't need to wait that long to play the title, as a demo will be available for owners of God of War: Ascension later this month.

The Last of Us is Naughty Dog's first new franchise since the Uncharted series, which has been dormant since 2011's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. The developer is rumored to be at work on a PlayStation 4 game, which may have been inadvertently exposed earlier this week.

Best MP ever, but you won't say anything about it other than that? Sure, whatever you say. I'm just gonna put on my anti-thinking-for-yourself-cap and then I'll fully agree with you.

That is such a moronic comment, I won't even bother. I bet the gametypes are practically Survival, Hunter and Search and Destroy.

So glad some companies are still making new IPs these days. Variety is the spice of gaming. :)

That's one hell of a bold statement to make. I applaud them for their brass.

Oh good, another game that doesn't need multiplier. Stop wasting resources on non-needed features.

I would say that Demon Souls has the best multiplayer experience.

Damn, I didn't even KNOW Last of Us was going to have multiplayer. Thought it was going to be single-player only.

I love Naught Dog, I really do, but nobody should say this kind of things, first because it makes expectations fly high, then because it's really hard to deliver once the hype is up and finally because som much in this industry is a matter of OPINION, this is a stupid thing to say...

Last of us best multiplayer ever concieved, umh i somehow find that hard to believe.

I am anxiously waiting for this game, (not keen on multiplayer though) but i find hard to believe that they played every single multiplayer game on earth to be able to know theirs is the best...

Ignoring this exaggeration, if the multiplayer is half the quality of what the game seems to be, then we are for one hell of a ride, this is a game that marks a generation, can't wait for this game to come out, but boasting like this? uh uh not good.

It's the best ever! Totally. We're awesome. Now I'm sure Naughty Dog has the pedigree to deliver, but excuse me if I don't trip over myself to toe your marketing line.

I don't think Naughty Dog's pedigree is anything to be taken lightly. When they talk about things like this I tend to listen more than when people like Peter Molyneux run their mouth. If you're a developer that continues to push what you can do I'll listen.

I'm thinking there may be a kind of red dead, Crysis 3 mash up. Open, free roam levels, with players split between humans and the infected. It's not strictly original, but it would be unique, especially playing as the infected.

Whatever it is, I'm sure the game is going to be epic. :D

Naughty Dog did a great job with the Uncharted Series, so I think with the experience they had in the past, this game is going to be a master piece and its not the same genre as Uncharted, cant wait to play this. They tried to do something new, and I think they did a great job.

This fucking fucking great game leave me with one question " how many games out there have this kind of SOUL in them?"  For me, the majority of games are full of shit. Only a few are so extraordinary such as Resident Evil, Dead Space, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, etc. All of which comes with great story. I got pissed a little when I read a game publisher's comment said something like good story in game would not incur its financial success. I think the more they believe in that, the more shitty games we have.

It would be sick to play co-op throughout the campaign... anything else would be 'already done'.

I am not interested in simple play a match multiplayer like Uncharted had. If it is something co-op and integrated more along the lines of Dark Souls I would be interested.

well since they are so confident about it, im assuming its not a stupid competitive deathmatch, maybe its something like dark souls multiplayer, where people can either indirectly influence other peoples play experience. invading other peoples game as a bandit dosen't feel like a bad idea either.

Put away the torches and pitchforks people. Since when is it wrong to say something like this about a project that you've put a lot of time and effort into? Especially through a medium like Twitter. This wasn't a press release or a games expo. Mr. Wells hasn't been going around telling everyone that the multiplayer in The Last of Us is the greatest thing ever. He just said it in much the same way that I imagine I would if this was my project and I was really excited about it. You know, with a tone of excitement.  This statement isn't a part of the so-called "hype machine". It's just a guy who likes what he's produced and wants to do some well-earned bragging.

@meleekill989 Twitter can mislead and do a lot of damage, remember #dealwithit, the whole 720 always online thing.

It's a game, people can brag, but do it with something substantial backing up the words you state, otherwise people won't blindly believe it, atleast I hope they won't.

Many respectable developers lose their way after getting success and public aknowledgement. No, I'm not saying Naughty Dog is like that, I'm just saying it can happen quickly.

cheers

@erMonezza @meleekill989 People just need to realize that everything said on Twitter is a direct, unfiltered statement from a single person who may or may not represent the opinions of the company or group that they are a part of. Naughty Dog has had a ton of success already and they're still making quality games without the constant hype of other AAA studios (looking at you, EA). I think this whole situation has been blown out of proportion.

And hey, Microsoft's publicity dept. never tried to change public opinion on the whole #dealwithit situation. That's their own fault, and they'll suffer for it in the end when Infinity goes to market. A perfect example of a single person's Twitter comment affecting an entire company.

Pockets69
Pockets69

@erMonezza @meleekill989 exactly this, i don't like this boast games that developers like to play, but would certainly be worst if they said "we are conceiving the worst multiplayer ever created" #dealwithit thats more or less what orth did XD

If it's some kind of amazing coop multiplayer I could imagine it to be a good multiplayer. But the best multiplayer in game history? That guy never played Super Smash Bros.

breathnac

@Trickymaster hey don't knock it just yet we know nothing about it. I know being better that Smash Bros. is a long shot but some day a multiplayer game will beat it; it's only a matter of time.

The exceeding amount of MP content shoved into SP experiences is a model that hasn't fared well. Tomb Raider, Spec Ops, Far Cry 3 are all prime examples where the resources used to make MP could have easily been utilized to further the quality of the SP. Games like Dishonored, Metro LL are really there to cement the idea that you can still have a compelling experience without a PVP interaction.

Like most people I see Last Of Us as a single player experience, a game where I can immerse in the interaction of a player/AI reflecting on the isolation of the environment. I don't see the point of survival games attracting more characters on screen in the attempts of making something "FUN" because the GDD outlines it, or worse, a false pretense to justify the $60 price tag for a fuller experience.

ElFlechero
ElFlechero

@Tychobrahi  Except with THIS studio's MP content they added to a SP experience so far has been excellent. So let's give it a chance.

Tychobrahi
Tychobrahi

@ElFlechero @Tychobrahi Yea that's about all there's left to do. If it does great, that's good but I remember reading the same kind of excitement induced by Crystal Dynamics for Tomb Raider and look how that turned out. Albeit it was a different company working on MP.

Tychobrahi
Tychobrahi

@ElFlechero @Tychobrahi Yup. If it's a magnified scope of other survivors like Ellie and Joel, where you are working with them against the infected through a "Spartan Ops" like episodic content THAT would be freaking awesome.

ElFlechero
ElFlechero

@Tychobrahi @ElFlechero I actually remember reading and watching previews for Tomb raider's multiplayer, and everybody was saying, well this looks cheap and unpolished, but at least there's the single player. But true,  you won't know how good it is till you play it.
