MX vs. ATV franchise jumps 10 million milestone

THQ's off-road stunt racer hits deca-platinum marker lifetime-to-date; Alive trailer to debut at Monster Energy AMA Supercross season opener on Jan. 8.

THQ is getting tricky with the pricing of its upcoming MX vs. ATV: Alive, with plans to discount the game but offer weekly downloadable content. But even without the tweaked pricing scheme, the MX vs. ATV franchise has performed well for the publisher. THQ announced today that the franchise has shipped more than 10 million units lifetime-to-date.

Included in the 10 million tally are all installments in the franchise created by Rainbow Studios. Beginning with MX Unleashed in 2004, the series picked up the "vs. ATV" suffix with MX vs. ATV Unleashed in 2005. The series continued in 2007 with MX vs. ATV Untamed, garnering a reserved critical reception, before rebounding slightly in 2009 with MX vs. ATV Reflex. A PSP-exclusive version, MX vs. ATV: On the Edge, also saw release in 2006.

Along with announcing the franchise's milestone, THQ announced today that it would formally unveil the next installment in the series with a trailer as part of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season opener in Anaheim on January 8, 2011. Titled MX vs. ATV: Alive, the game is currently scheduled to arrive for unspecified gaming systems this spring.

I hope they keep the same controls as in Reflex. Best MX/SX game to date purely because of the controls. Otherwise Activisions MTX Mototrax would win. I hope they get rid of the other crap with sport trucks and buggys though just keep it MX, SX and freestyle like it should be.

These games are suprisringly fun to play. Just chill out for a couple of hours, racing doing stunts etc. I didn't know that this series was as popular as this. But these games are very pick up and play.

@heshertonfist Completely agree!! It's a quality sport, I have a mate that does enduro.. But I never thought the games were that popular. How I was wrong!

I didn't realize this series was that popular.

And by weekly dlc, they mean one new bike a week that will probably be 2 bucks a pop. Every 2 months they will probably release a new map that will cost 5 buck. So in the end it will probably cost 100 bucks for a game that still wont be as good as the first one.

The first mx vs atv was the best one. I have the second one and was really disappointed with it. The best was the first ATV off road fury.

I had a few of the older games on the original Xbox, but I haven't played the new ones

If only if they can make a next-gen Jet Moto game.

The cheaper initial price point probably means there won't be much to play until we start getting some DLC. How much is this "weekly" is going to be? To get a full game is probably going to cost us as much as 3 games!

I wonder how good "weekly" dlc is going to even be? I like the idea, but can't help being a bit skeptical.
