Speaking with Kotaku, Fils-Aime explained that Nintendo determined "single-touch was a more appropriate option" given the GamePad's other buttons. While Fils-Aime acknowledged that the price of a multi-touch display played a part in the decision making, he added that there was a consideration to the gaming experience as well.
"Certainly there's a cost to it. Again, we envision this as a controller that you're putting in your hands and you're doing a two-screen experience," he said. "The concept of putting it in your lap to do multi-touch for us just feels unwieldy."
In addition to addressing the GamePad's single-touch screen, Fils-Aime promised that the Wii U will incorporate improvements to Nintendo's existing Friend Code system from the Wii. There will still be friends, and gamers will have a separate level of interaction available for those people on their friends lists, but Fils-Aime promised that the process of confirming someone as a friend will be "a lot simpler" than it is with the Wii.

if nintendo is doing everything wrong why is the vita not selling more then 3ds why is xbox and ps not coming with anything new when they know its needed already developers have already stressed the fact this extended gen is hurting the industry , look at the sales charts they just reported the lowest july sales since 2006 and nintendos wrong i think sony and microsoft need to wake up 2015 is to long of a wait
@Blazeingdragin ya im really sure sony has the funds to make yet another powerful yet 600 dollar disaster you gotta be kidding me with that statement , and microsoft is not going to be stupid to do so either, this next gen will not be like the jump from ps2 to ps3 or xbox to 360 , only wii u will be the massive jump from wii /gc to wii u , so ya , you better rethink before you post such lies ,
Realistically speaking how many people will actually use the WII U's social aspect. Let's say Nintendo's plan of having this system geared towards adults and matured gamers was executed and adults actually bought this system, which could happen, with cellphones who would use this for connecting with other grown friends to video chat on a probably low resolution camera on this...ugly controller. I for one am not even planning to use the standard game pad but use the pro controller for games such as Tekken and fps games which is sad because the new controller was supposed to be the "big thing", the selling point for the WII U aside from the graphics which Sony will probably blow this out of the water.
Pff! Having more than one touch spot at a time doesn't mean every piece of software would have to use more than one touch point. With all the buttons on the controller, a lot of touch points isn't really needed, but having at least two wouldn't hurt.
Anyone else remember when gamers cared about the actual games?
Anyway, I don't see how the Wii U could benefit from multitouch at all. You will be using it with one hand most of the time, meaning pinching and stretching isn't reasonable. This is a game controller, not a goddamn iDevice.
@14monkey Nintendo has always been a little hard to adapt to model standards. For example, back in the N64 days everyone knew the Optical Disks where the way of the future, and still they decided to go with cartridges.
Price is immediately the first thing I thought about, but I have to admit that Reggie is right: multi-touch is unwieldy and unnecessary. Just think about it, you're going to be holding the controller with at least one hand at all times. Why would you need multi-touch? Multi-touch is really only useful if both hands are free, or if you need to do gestures like pinching. Perhaps there are a few missed opportunities by the decision to forgo multi-touch, but I think the cost benefit outweighs it.
I'm looking forward to the Wii U. If nothing else, it might actually spur some ingenuity in an industry that is fast becoming stale (and by that I mean there are very few games that I actually feel like paying 60 bucks for).
Well ladies and gentlemen I think after browsing though the comments I can say somewhat honestly that I have seen it all. According to one commenter (cough...Benny_a...cough) people who play Nintendo games are pedophiles. And unfortunately that is why large segments of the gaming community are stereotyped as immature teenagers. When some of you guys grow up maybe video games will have an easier time of gaining respect among other art/media forms of expression. To everyone else have a great day.
God, i can't wait for the day when 88% of Gamespot's users go to the stores, fight each other and burn the new wii u consoles. Why? Because more than 80% of the users here don't like Nintendo and go to EVERY SINGLE NINTENDO ARTICLE written in this site just to WRITE NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT NINTENDO AND THE WII U. That has to stop, there's no respect in here, everyone arguing with everyone, calling each other troll, comparing consoles, judging Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft (mostly Nintendo), bashing every console and graphic whores...
Is there any way Sony users stay at Sony articles, Microsoft users stay at Xbox articles and Nintendo users stay at Nintendo articles?
Why the need and will to go and compare consoles, start drama and bash Nintendo? WHY?
Let the Wii U be even released and then come and give your opinion about the controller, graphics, specs and games, don't bash something you don't own.
Good Luck Nintendo, i know they will kill it with the sales. They deserve it.
I feel for Nintendo. Their markets are being attacked on all sides by very big players in technology - handhelds are becoming unnecessary due to phones and tablets, and the console arena is being taken over by companies with more experience in online and all-purpose media boxes. I wouldn't be surprised if they go to a software-only business model in the not-so-distant future.
@Slagar Well, at the moment, Nintendo is the leading video game company in the home console and handheld arena. They are making an effort to release a new console to the market after more than 6 years. Wonder what Sony and Microsoft are doing ?
Actually i think this is a good idea and i don't really understand the hate for this. It is called a tablet controller not a tablet. It is a controller for the new console and just that. They didn't want to give you a tablet for your new system, they wanted to give you a new kind of controller. So yes it doesn't have multi-touch like tablets but it has face buttons, D-pad, shoulder buttons and analog sticks because it is a CONTROLLER not a tablet. And about this whole "last Nintendo console" stuff: huge games like AC 3 and Arkham City comes to the system wich means that develeopers obviously have faith in the Wii U and in the end it is games that define a system. I have no doubt that the Wii U will earn its place in the current generation but in 2 or 3 years we will see the PS4 and the new Xbox (Orbis and Durango) that will be the true rite of passage for the Wii U.
@REVOLUTIONfreakall but two are not out yet and with all the things they are doing with batman, I think it would take some time. even with out these games it still has a better launch line up and better graphics than-Amped,Cod 2,Condemned,Gun,Kameo Most Wanted,PerfectDark,KingKong,PGR3,Quake,RidgeRacer,
American Wasteland.lol did I just list all the launch titles for the 360 in two lines. name one that is still worth $5.
Since no one else is giving constructive comments, I suppose I will. Before the Wii U was fully shown off at this E3, one of the things I was hoping for was NO multi touch, for more or less the exact reason Reggie gives here. So no, they didn't pull this "excuse" out of their ass and it's not just about the cost. I honestly can't wait for the Wii U to be a massive success, because I'm not sure what's annoying me more at this point; the Nintendo Fanboys or the Nintendo Haters.
Nintendo stock has dropped from $40 per share to $15. Since they announced Wii U last E3 2011. -67.8% decline! Don't kid yourself. Nobody is believing in this console except hardcore fanboys. But with the lack of focus on motion it will also lose its use as a party console for casual gamers and the old. They will simply keep their old Wii.
This is gonna be a disaster. I think key people at Nintendo will be forced to step down after this. Not only that, Nintendo will do a Sega and have no other choice but to join one of the console manufacturers or even Apple.
Listen up fanboys... just because someone thinks the Wii U is a POS doesn't mean they are a troll. Pointing out facts about the Wii U, that you don't like, doesn't mean they are a troll. It's called having an opinion and it's allowed to be different from yours. Unless it's stated in a provoking manner, IT'S NOT TROLLING!!! Just because YOU take issue with a statement doesn't make it trolling. So wipe your tears, put on the big-boy pants, and stop calling people trolls that don't have their head up Nintendos' a$$ like the fanboys do.
you are trolling now dude.Trolling: postingh with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional responseor of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. This is about multitouch not being on wii u tablet.
@Vodoo But on the other side of that , they ( supporting wii-u ) have just the same right to disagree with it without being insulted. Look on your own post seeing people like @Benny_a say ''That?s because Nintendo products ARE for kids or infantile people that have no self-respect.'' you don't consider that a ''provoking manner''? or @dreamfist11 that has barely even posted 2 comments that don't have insults in them. As you'll notice the only (yes? I believe so) person I've called a troll is dreamfist and you can pretty obviously tell that. While I will admit there has been some very ''trollish'' acting by those 'defending' the wii-u so to speak , you have to admit there's been quite a bit on ''your'' side as well.
@bananaclawz See you've gone and undermined your entire attempt at feigning maturity and stealth bragging your successful family life with that last comment. Try losing his virginity so he can label a system directed toward E for everyone what it is? We all know what E stands for..it stands for "safe" entertainment that adults may enjoy with their kids as well. Games are labeled "for children" when they're for children.
Have I enjoyed every Pixar movie I've ever seen? Hell yes. Would I deny that the main focus of their movies are to entertain children? Hell no. Pixar may even be a bad example because most of their productions employ a very adult underlying story as well, but even still their entertainment is for kids to also be enjoyed by adults. Thus they're still kids movies. Entertainment is never made for adults that kids can enjoy too, hence why any entertainment made for kids is labelled "for kids". Doesn't mean I don't enjoy LoZ but it doesn't mean Nintendo still focuses on M rated experiences on their consoles like they used to.
@Benny_a It's not nostalgia to consider NES/SNES games good , it's common decency. The lack of speech? That's a feature that makes a game ''kiddy'' ? What about games like Journey with not a word spoken throughout the entire game? Music? Since it's pretty obvious it's Nintendo games most that you're talking about let's avoid the pretext that it isn't , both the Zelda and Mario franchises have had some of the most popular music of all time. ''When I see a game i can tell you imidietly if its kiddy or not'' that's called prejudice , and it's not something to boast of , in fact is eve more so disproves your claims of maturity.
''Its a problem with your generation, most of you stay kids for most of your lifes, if you want to grow up I recommend 4 years of army service, giving something to your country and learning how to be a real man'' and playing video games itself is manly? It is going to absolutely kill you to hear this , but video games themselves are toys , just a different type of them. Since it contributes no full accomplishment to society you could say gaming itself is ''immature'' , much less for you to go onto a superiority high criticizing others because of their taste in game. Then you must not have served yourself , unless ''being a real man'' is going onto internet news articles and throwing insults because someone has a different taste in games.
@moviequest14 Im not nostalgic nerd, I only see forwrad, I dont care about past games, I never play games more then once in my life,(same with movies BTW), of course i would like to play a full 3D remake of FF6 or 7.
its the feel about the games, when I see a game i can tell you imidietly if its kiddy or not, its the colors, the character desghin, the speech (or lack of it), the music, its a combination of everything
@Benny_a Oh so now Nes/snes games weren't ''normal'' I'm sure a LOT of people would be glad to hear that. I'm also really glad we muddled through all those horrible non-normal games until we got to the past 3 (or 2 if you consider that n64/ps1 games weren't ''normal'' either) generations. You're proving your claim to be ''30+'' more and more bogus by the minute , the reason I call bs on that is because noone of full mental capability would throw such an insult towards the generation they were raised in and played in. Oh ok... you're basing the maturity of a game on colors? Yet another dazzling sign of your immense maturity. Extremely mature of you to classify all games as ''mature'' or not based only on how you ''feel'' they are and to insult anyone that likes said games you in your almighty wisdom deem to be immature.
@Benny_a So , according to your logic , Portal and Portal 2 , Civilization __ , minecraft , Journey , World of Goo , Ico Shadow Colossus , The Sims , Rayman Origins , etc. are all kids games and anyone that plays them are infantiles , etc. ? None of them have a lot (if at all) of violence , gore , $ex , etc. so according to your logic they're all not mature games and anyone that plays them is infantile? What about SNES era (which if you're as old as you say you are you should've played at least some through)? When most of the games were some form of platforming with few ''shooters'' in 3rd person and none in first? Does that mean all of those games were infantile and for kids? What is this exact code by which a game is considered ''for kids''? Most of those games completely contradict that , most , almost all , are rated e/e10 or a very light T yet are enjoyed by many adults , some almost exclusively by adults. What about those? What if not that... just basing it off of art style? And I suppose since Ocarina of Time falls into this set of rules that you consider ''made for children'' you are saying that everyone that played that is infantile and unhealthy?
@BrownGrownMan Though I find it funny how people think that because a game is rated Mature it is mature. When you walk down the street and see 2 groups of kids , the first group a group of 5 year olds actually having a normal conversation , and the second a group of 13 year olds cracking sex and s### jokes and talking gore just to outdo each other .... which group is more mature? The second group's content in their discussion would only be ''for mature audience'' but noone with half their wits would consider that group mature. To put it in a more game-centered perspective , the Portal Series is rated E (10) , but it is quite a damn bit more mature than many (most some would say) M-rated games. And on the other side Saints Row boasts an M for ''mature'' rating , but it is easily one of the most immature games I've seen (doesn't make it bad but it's the truth) as is Leisure Suit Larry , etc.''Entertainment is never made for adults that kids can enjoy too'' really? Because I was in gamestop the other day and saw a kid (8... maybe 9?) begging his older brother to get him Killzone , what about all the 12 year olds on CoD multiplayer? The irony of your statement is.... it's usually the kids that are so obsessed with their maturity that they consistently talk about how they are '' too big for ____''. The ones that talk about their maturity the most are usually the ones that aren't secure in it.
Its a problem with your generation, most of you stay kids for most of your lifes, if you want to grow up I recommend 4 years of army service, giving something to your country and learning how to be a real man.
@Benny_a I remember being like 12 and having to hide I was watching animes like Digimon or Pokemon, simply because kids always do that kind of stuff. After i grew up (23 years old right now) I realized it doesn't matter and I have no problem telling people I play pokemon games or find games like scribblenauts interesting.
As others said, you will understand this when you grow up, reading your comments reminded me of those 12 years old kids.
I play games to have fun , as everyone should, I like GTA, Prototype, DMC, and other M rated games, but that doesn't mean I can't have fun with an E or T rated game, like Mario or Zelda.
Reread both your and the other guy's comments, and you will see how immature you sound with the stuff you are saying, and if you can't realize that, then you definitely need to grow up, good luck.
@Benny_a As I said before you are nothing more than a child that feels the need to play "mature" games to feel grown up.
"Interactive books" ya that sounds about right they aren't on par with any decent novel. Good video games are on par with movies not novels when it comes to story and a few games actually surpass that level of story but not many. Most video games are just time killers and to try and separate them based on art style is simply moronic.
@Benny_a Right... You claim to be 30 years old but you behave just like a 13-18 year old child in his rebellious stages. I guess its understandable you find video game sex entertaining it's because you haven't gotten laid yet. Mean while I can play games with and with out sex because I don't have a need to prove myself to my peers. Now when you grow up some day you might realize that video games and movies with sex really aren't that entertaining. Unless of course you completely fail at life and never manage to get laid....
Come back when you graduate high school. Also you make all non-religious people(doesn't necessarily mean atheist) look like kids... The only people that feel the need to play "mature" games are insecure adults and little children trying to be grown up but those of us that are normal prefer to play what's fun. I've played everything from GTA(not really mature but it does push social limits which you seem to view as mature) to Mario. Only real difference between the games is art style. But hey if you are so insecure that you only play games with sex that's your problem.
