Mucky Foot shutters doors

British developer of Blade 2 shuts down. Fate of Bulletproof Monk unclear.

The British development community lost another member over the weekend when Mucky Foot Productions, the studio behind Startopia and Blade 2, shuttered its doors. "It is very sad," said a spokesperson for the studio, continuing, "We haven't released a statement yet, as I think this was the last thing on the directors' minds." The closure of the Newcastle, UK-based studio--founded in 1998 by a group of former Bullfrog employees--put around 50 people out of work.

The publicist didn't comment on the status of Bulletproof Monk, the Mucky Foot-developed movie adaptation which was due for consoles and PC later this year.

Empire, the game's publisher, said through a spokesperson that it was committed to the Bulletproof Monk project and intends to release the game in Q1 2004.

A sad day, a small company with a big future closing down. Urban Chaos is a tremendous game, though it's now considered abandoned. Very well-made, with amazing audio, spectacular textures and incredible animations. It's a pity, there's a lot of little companies that develop only one game that isn't advertised, but it is really surprising when you play it. Mucky Foot defunct website is really funny, though sad, at the same time. The company's crew is really good. I congratulate all the members.

It really was. I'm playing it now, again, and enjoying every bit of it. That new 'Urban Chaos' seems only to be borrowing the name. Eidos must have the rights to that title, I guess.

That sucks, Urban Chaos was a promising game that was too far ahead of its time for the hardware at the time..
