MTV honors game music
"Best Video Game Score" added to this year's MTV Video Music Awards alongside "Best Video Game Soundtrack."
MTV released its nominees for the 2006 Video Music Awards, and it seems the night will see Hitman's Agent 47 and Electroplankton's...things...rubbing "elbows" with the likes of Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
This year, MTV is honoring games in two VMA categories: "Best Video Game Score" and "Best Video Game Soundtrack," the former of which is new this year. At last year's awards, Dance Dance Revolution Extreme took home the soundtrack award.
MTV will air the VMAs live on August 31. The announced nominees for both categories are listed below:
Best Video Game Score:
Dreamfall: The Longest Jounrey (Even "Magnet" Johansen)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Jeremy Soule)
Electroplankton (user-generated)
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (Tom Salta)
Hitman: Blood Money (Jesper Kyd)
Best Video Game Soundtrack:
Burnout Revenge (Electronic Arts)
Driver: Parallel Lines (Atari)
Fight Night Round 3 (Electronic Arts)
Mark Ecko's Getting Up (Atari)
NBA 2K6 (2K Games)
Game Score has got to be Ghost Recon, Best soundtrac is probally Burnout. But thats just my opinion, i could be wrong.
Burnout Revenge has a fairly decent soundtrack, shame the game sucked..
I love driver parelell lines. but can I get the advertisment to driver parelell lines
Burnout Revenge owns....
the nominies goes to.......BURNOUT REVENGE!!!!!
Who sung that song It is cute
It's about time they started getting their due. Our pop culture has been filled with video game music for almost two decades now. The most recent example that comes to mind is the goofy theme from Space Colony playing in a beer commercial.
burnout revenge is a blast, the best racing game ever, but ffx got some musics that i never forgat,so wtf,ffx should be in the list!!!!
perfet game ............
right on!
mtv is awsome
WHERE IS TEH UEMATSU!?
mtv sucks i just watch beavis and butt heas on mtv2
I couldn't care about MTV. It sucks since the 80's. Then they tried to make MTV2. Which was like MTV used to be, now its gone downhill too.
mtv sucks, Its all about spike and fuse baby
i have never and will never expect anything good from MTV, and I dont think that they deserve any more argument from us proud and noble fans of games and music.
The problem with MTV is that they choose the "best" based upon pop culture majorities. For example, NBA 2K6 is played by many many more people then, say, Homeworld, while anyone with an ear for music would choose Homeworld as the best of the two. While i understand homeworld isnt eligable 'cause its "old," my point still stands. MTV chooses based on what keeps it in business, not what may truely be the best. For those that remember, MTV had 1 good video. It's first (Video killed the Radio Star). Since then, it has only gone down hill. Ol' Jack Black was right...
Were is the MGS 3 soundtrack? What about Guitar Hero??? Theres no way Hitman had a better soundtrack than MGS 3, no way.
No one expects actual, physical music from MTV no more. They have no purpose in life other than to suck. Oh, and also squeeze out Pimp My Ride. That might be the whole network's only gem in a big black puddle of **** that is everything else.
You're kidding. No Guitar Hero? What, was is not mainstream and girly enough for MTV?
hey, cesarotromundo, MTV killed music by introducing mainstream b******* into our lives. Like the great Jack Black once said: "There used to be a way to 'stick it' to the man, it was called rock 'n' roll. But guess what, oh no, the man ruined that too with a little thing called MTV!"
this is the 2nd time in like five years they have done this. they only do it because gaming is now mainstream. remember when they used to make fun of folks who read comic books and now after the success of movies such as blade, xmen and spider man they now have specials and whatnot??? an mtv news guy made a breif(gotta use slomo) cameo in fantastic four!!!!!!!! mtv is tryin to make it mainstream so they can attract gamers which they wont
Go plankton! Could you imagine if they won? who would go up and accept?
I don't know why people in this website hate hate MTv so darn much.... Everyone likes it around here! and the music ... maybe most of you guys don't like it... but there is people like me that enjoy listening to that kind of music! you guys have to understand that people have different tastes and if you don't like MTv then good for you... but don't be saying that its a bad channel or whatnot... no one is saying anything about what you guys watch on Tv!
Sign of the times when MTV decides to pick up on it .... games are becoming distressingly mainstream ... sigh :(
This news is pointless without Guitar Hero being nominated.
Since when does MTV have music? I thought all they showed were crappy reality shows. Maybe they should be just TV, and drop the M althogether.
what happened to Splinter Cell Chaos Theory last year?!?!?! by far one of the best, if not theee best soundtrack for a game to date! MTV suck ballllsh!
MTV jumping on the game bandwagon... 20 years after everyone else. THAW has the best soundtrack ever anyways. Dead Kennedys RULE
I totally agree, MTV has nothing to do with music anymore. The little music they play are only the newest and flashiest music and the rest are only stupid shows. If I must watch TV and listen to music the same time, I rather watch VH1. They a much better mix than MTV.
Umm...that's super and all that the MTV folks are adding Best Original Score to the mix, but ummm, where in the hell are Metal Gear Solid 3 and Shadow of the Colossus? The scores in those games are two of the best EVER, yet they aren't on the list. Dreamfall and Hitman? Right...those two DEFINITELY deserve to be nominated over SotC and MGS3...
great for game music composers...
I see MTV like crummy music on games as well as just regular listening
Alot of games have been overlooked, God Of War, Shadow of the Colossus and Metal Gear Solid 3 most noticeably
Check out Magnet (Dreamfall) and his mesmerizing Dylan cover Lay Lady Lay, among other great stuff...
YAY! Electroplankton!!!:D
Marc Ecko's Getting Up is the greatest
MTV sucks. why is this news? i dont care what MTV thinks
How dare Gamespot say "music" and the M-word in the same sentence.
yaa w00t for dreamfall
To Everyone... I would like to start a video game music community. I would like to record the fundamental tracks of famous video game soundtracks in Samplitude...send them around the internet...and see how it comes out. Contact me if you are a musician and would like to take part. Sweendrix
I don't get it, what does MTV have to do with music.
clearly Mark Eckos Getting Up has the best soundtrack...
Personally, I'm rooting for Burnout Revenge. I think it has the music the MTV guys like. And, you can't beat hard rock.

Wow 1st time i see MTV so crazy bout Game music !
I hate anything MTV AWARD related... mainly because if its not popular, its not got an award. I think that they should seriously scout out ALL the games, not essentially just the ones either recently released into a media frenzy, or just so different that it is fashionable (aka electroplankton). Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney soundtrack, it's on itunes... is it in MTV awards? no... Oh, how about Burnout revenge?... ok i am just kidding.. game SOUNDTRACK?!?! I can fully understand SCORE... but SOUNDTRACK?! Should'nt they mean "compillation" ??!! That's like saying "and the award for best arrangement of various pop culture tracks in a romantic comedy and/or teen movie gos to...". Best soundtrack??! dance dance revolution.... ahem... isn't that a bit silly? Not only is it only a game where you dance, to MUSIC, but it literally shouldn't even of been up for an award! I mean, the songs used weren't even written FOR the game. Fair enough, I could understand soundtracks with their own score combined with significant tracks aswell, but not a soundtrack consisting entirely of tracks hand picked off the teeny charts... But hey, voted by the teens for the teens right?
Oblivion has a repetitive and annoying score; it is the possibly most overrated game ever made. Burnout Revenge has a really dissapointing soundtrack compared to Burnout 3. Guitar Hero had great music in it, much better than Burnout Revenge. If that one made the list, I would vote for it. And MYV Sucks! Whoever said Moron TV, you got that right. What ever happened to music?
guitar hero? lumines? shadow of the colossus? we love katamari? ok... i guess my taste isnt as good as mtv... at least they have electroplankton...
It's neat to see Electroplankton being recognized. For a game it's OK, but as an app., it's great. Beatnes rules!!!
