NetherRealm Studios' reboot of violent fighting franchise marks another milestone; WBIE dubs it the highest-selling fighting game of the year.
Last month, Mortal Kombat sales were pegged at "close to 3 million" by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay. The latest installment in the long-running gore-soaked fighting franchise has swapped out a couple key words, as the publisher today officially declared that is has sold "over 3 million" copies worldwide across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
In addition, the publisher called Mortal Kombat "the highest-selling fighting game of the year." That would put the game at the top of a relatively small heap, as only a handful of noteworthy fighting games have hit stores this year. Capcom has released Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, while Tecmo Koei launched Dead or Alive: Dimensions on the 3DS, and Square Enix debuted Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy.
The first game in the franchise since 2008's Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and the ninth in the series, Mortal Kombat was intended as a back-to-basics reboot. With a roster pulled almost entirely from the first three games in the series, Mortal Kombat also eschewed the 3D gameplay of later entries in the series by constraining the action to a 2D plane.
Since launch, WBIE has stoked interest in the game with the release of four new playable characters as downloadable content. While the first three--Skarlet, Rain, and Kenshi--were pulled from previous Mortal Kombat titles, the fourth was a new addition to the series, A Nightmare on Elm Street villain Freddy Krueger. It was not the game's only "krossover" fighter, as God of War protagonist Kratos appeared as an exclusive extra in the PS3 version of the game.

Mortal Kombat 9 ftw, I hate Capcom for making way too many versions of the same game especially Street Fighter IV.
Three million opponents to face-off against and i always happen to meet the ones that beat me easily! ;)
Ok, 3 million, very well; Now, to make a flawless victory release it to PC with all the DLCs inside as a goty/special edition/collectors edition/whatever you want to call it, please.
Excellent news. The new Mortal Kombat was the best reboot of a series I can think of and it deserves the good sales. :)
and netherrealm will celebrate this milestone by giving away free DLC!!! yeeeeeeyyyyy!!!!!...I wish...
Yeah, I still think a PC version would have been nice. But, guess that wouldn't increase the number of sold copies much.
Best fighting game ever made...i have spent over 300hours on this game. Even with the crappy online. Believe you me, it's been hard playing this game lately, so many months have gone by. and Nether Realm have not fixed or even talked about fixing De-syncing/Random drop outs/Disconnects/Arcade Stick De-syncing glitch. Come on Nether Realm fix it already. Been looking for a new game to jump on away from all the crappy problems that MK9 has. looks like Gears 3 will be it!!!! NR just swept the online problems under a rug, now its time for me to do the same with this game. Thanks NR thanks for not fixing your game Dicheads
Good this game for sure deserves every sale it gets. No WB just needs to fix mortal kombat arcade collection.
When the game was released it was NEARLY UNPLAYABLE due to the poor net code. King of the Hill and Ranked matches rarely worked. Fortunately they fixed Ranked matches - but, KoTH still barely works and there's an annoying bug where just two players can't start the match alone unless another player joins.
Should have been named "RAGE QUIT: The game". Either you get spammed by Scorpion, Smoke, Kung Lao, Raiden, Sonya, Cyrax or one of the HORRIBLY BALANCED DLC characters and RAGE QUIT, or, you start beating the crap out of someone who started spamming you until you got the upper hand on them and THEN THEY RAGE QUIT. Less than half the games I play on a daily basis ever make it to Fatality because you always geet the same message: "this session is no longer available" after the other guy RAGE QUITS. What they really need is a LOCKOUT that stops you from reconnecting to the MK server for about 10 - 15 minutes if you RAGE QUIT or leave a match early. Then, all they'd have to do is FIX ALL THE BROKEN CHARACTERS like Mileena and Liu Kang who just spam the hell out of you as soon as the round starts.
Too bad that the online play is unplayable due to incredible amount of lag... Also, the price is quite ridiculous... 70$ + DLC.
@gatsbythepig: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition. There were also a couple fighting games released for the 3DS.
"highest-selling fighting game of the year" I love MK but were there any other fighters this year? It's not hard to be the best when you are the only one... and I am not talking about a game that was released last year and then tweaked 3 times so it could be rereleased at a lower price(I am looking at you Street Fighter) or the MvC games which have always been a disappointment, even back in the 90s in the arcade.
I'm very happy to see that the MK franchise is still alive and stronger than ever. They did it right this time, shows that old school style fighting will bring up the sales.
Nice to see it selling well. But the best part is that it's outselling this years' Capcom fighters. That's what you deserve Capcom!!!
Good since it has sold well. Maybe the will release a Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition at half price for those of us that didn't jump on from day one :D
Bought it. Love it. And I love that I don't have to worry about Super Mortal Kombat coming out soon. If you want the new characters and stages, buy the DLC. If you don't, then don't. Sounds simple enough to me.
