Huh.... they were easy to get. I got 2 of them. Then again I was first in line and only stood out in the cold for only 3 hours with 8 other people.
Nintendo claims preorders at speciality retailer have sold out, with quarter of a million gamers on waitlist; $350 deluxe model proving more popular with preorders.
According to Nintendo, Wii U preorders at GameStop have sold out. That, however, has not kept gamers from expressing interest in the new console. Company president Satoru Iwata claimed in new presentation that as of last week, more than 250,000 gamers had put their names on GameStop's Wii U waitlist.
It was not announced how many Wii U units GameStop had available for preorder to begin with.
There will be two Wii U models available at launch in North America on November 18: a $300 8GB basic version and a $350 32GB deluxe model that comes in black and includes a copy of NintendoLand. According to Iwata, the premium set is seeing more preorders than the base model. A more specific breakdown of the differences was not provided.
I will pick New Super Mario Bros U and ZombiU , its so sad that Aliens Colonial marines will be launched later december.
I wanted to get one on Day One, but the woman shut that down quickly. Oddly enough, one of her arguments against my getting a Wii U was that "You don't even play with the Wii anymore!"
@theKSMM You were shut down by a women? Sorry to hear that.
Anyway, a woman said the same exact thing to me toward Xbox 1. Still, I didn't regret buying the 360.
In saying this, i'm getting a Wii U.
@alrepairs Yep, it's not the first time that the woman has shut me down, and I'm sure it won't be the last. To be honest, it's probably for my own good. Left to my own devices, I'd be the only guy in the country with every new gadget known to man who was living in his car.
I hope you enjoy that Wii U. I hope to have the console One Day, it just won't be on Day One.
And this is exactly the reason that I preordered mine on day one. I wasn't able to get a Wii for almost a year after it launched due to Nintendo's shortage. (Regardless if it was a shortage made by Nintendo or not.)
I wish I pre-ordered one so I could turn around and sell it on eBay and make double my money back. Dammit!
Oddly enough I'm not excited enough about this console to get it on launch day. While I'm excited to see what it can do, I'll wait for Zelda, Mario (galaxy), or Smash Bros, before I buy it. I guess a Mario Kart game could entice me as well. I'm not waiting for a price drop, just waiting for a game I will actually play.
@McGregor Thats probably not a wise decision b/c those games alone can increase the WII U being sold out even more. Not sure when Zelda HD or Mario Kart HD will be out, but SmashBros Brawl was released a couple of months later after the Wii was out, it was in that following summer of 2008 b/c I was a senior in High school and I couldn't wait to get it. People are still buying Wii's now for 2 reasons 1. Homebrew and 2.SSB Brawl. The same can be done with the Wii U except HomeBrew at least for now lol. If your gonna play the waiting game then your better off to wait for a price drop to at least $250 on the White Wii U
@McGregor I'm not going to lie,
I'm actually excited for that 3d gyroscope feature. It doesn't sound gimmicky at all moreso inventive.
I'll "try" to buy it first day...if it sucks, I won't lie and protect the brand.
Here's the sentence that makes this article irrelevant:
"It was not announced how many Wii U units GameStop had available for preorder to begin with."
Without context, that 250,000 number is meaningless. Did they have 100,000 or 1,000,000 available before they had to start adding to a wait-list. We don't know.
The 360 sold 2.5 million units in the U.S. in its 1st 90 says.
The 360 sold 1.9 million units in the U.S. in November 2011.
There is no fan-boy-isms going on here, I just want some context.
250,000 on a wait list means nothing when you're talking about millions of actual sales from competing products.
Thats just one company. You do know people buy from hundreds of different companies. It adds up pretty quick esspecially when you stack up with number like 250,000.
Im not sure if this is what your asking but I beileve nintendo will shipp 4.5 million units around the world at launch and this article is basicly saying Gamestop has sold out and taking 250,000 more on the waitlist. Thats huge. For just 1 company to take on that many orders already. I think your missing the point.
@saltbalsak Another murky non-statement: "According to Iwata, the premium set is seeing more preorders than the base model. A more specific breakdown of the differences was not provided." Does "seeing preorders" include the wait list, or only the original allotment? Did N provide an equal allotment of both SKUs, or are they providing more premiums in order to favor/force the higher-ticket item?
I'd hate to be the guy who's in charge of makin either PS4 or Xbox720 a success!
Anyways, I got my Wii U pre-orderd. so yay ^^
I wonder how the pre-orders will be handled because i pre-ordered mine the day the pre-orders were announced.
I think that Wii u Hatred was started By gamespot because Some Editors did not liked It they made Wii u bad name and now Some kids Flame war again because of what Gamespot thinks about wii u that's not professional :)
As i rememeber psp had Demo's Only at launch, Neither ps 3 and xbox 360 had many games, xbox was 500$ with wifi and ps 3 cost 600$, Neither ps 2 had many games, original xbox had only Micrsoft developed games at start so stop Whining about that.
I'ts Funny how Sony and microsoft fans are Raging and hate what they see expt their fan system. I'm PC gamer i must bash and rage on consoles? nope i should not.
Manny will enjoy with wii u, PPL don't understand that Wii u will sell anyway good enough, and there will be manny games, Start games are Not manny but it will grow like it was with wii. You don't like wii u ? waiting till 2015-2016 year for next gen GL Do't bash Wii u even without try to test it.
not surprising, played with the wii u for about 30 min at gamestop with a friend. it was really fun, which is what gaming is about.
Yes, the other part of the population of gamers is cradling their tablets smugly and playing a larger selection of games while not limited to one very narrow scope of actual utility...or not bothering with the endless labyrinth of tablet games.
250,000 people who will get the Wii U home and come back the next day wanting the standard controller. I guarantee it. Nintendo need's to learn a lesson that gimmicks DONT make good games.
@DarthLod I can see your argument, but I would love to have a touch screen on my controller. If my xbox or PS3 controller had an instant select touch screen (to change inventory, weapon, view a map, complete an action, etc...) it would free up more hot keys on the actual controller. Actions that involve, "stop and do something" could be removed from the faster accessible action buttons and put on an interface that is faster than pausing (or opening a menu) and selecting something. I wouldn't be opposed to it being a bit smaller, but that eliminates it being a good "alternative" screen.
@DarthLod obviously you havent tried out the controller feels about the same as a 360 controller
@GoombaX Iv'e tried it. It's utter garbage. Just like the Wii and it's gimmick was.
I hope Nintendo does well with the system, but I hope those sales are deserved and Nintendo does more than they did with the Wii.
Nintendo better make the most of their 2 year window. When 2014 comes it's gameover. Microsoft is coming. Nintendo's one trick pony won't save them this time.
@roleplayer2004 Microsoft is coming? Yeah and then it got the RROD and died several months later, Microsoft shouldn't even be in the console market to begin with. Their console is nothing compare to Sony and Nintendo.
@roleplayer2004 Wii Was sold good even in 2010 WHy you think that it won't sell good now? Typical Kid fanboy, as for next gen it wont arrive till 2015 by that time Many will have wii u, and after that it will sell good enough because of price cut like they did with wii.
Oh yes, in two years when the Wii U has like over 20m sales by then, developers will most certainly abandon the system so they can waste money on a shiny new system, instead of making games for a cheaper system that will guarantee them high sales.
Also I'd like to know what you mean by "one trick pony".
@roleplayer2004 lol yea it will, besides the new xbox or ps cant be that much more powerful without being overpriced.
@roleplayer2004 Isnt this what people like you said about the gamecube and wii and that nintendo was going to fail blah blah blah!! The wii u will have more than enough games by that time to sustain themselves
Oh man, I hope I won't be waiting 6 months to get one. TO THE WAITLIST, AWAY!!!! >:O
Damn this thing is gonna feel so good in my pants.
I just went to Gamestop today and played the Wii U. Now I am definitely buying it as soon as possible. :D
The question is how many did they actually make available for preorder in the first place? Smells like a intended scarcity again like with the wii. I'm not buying into this.
The final question is how many will they sell after the fanboy holiday is over and the core market doesn't bother? I smell a price drop or bust.
If initial sales are strong, despite hardly any gaming announcements from Nintendo, what more when they reveal more games, especially the ones most people have been waiting for? Plus if the 3rd party games sell well, that'll only strengthen 3rd party support and get more developers on board.
@The_Dragon_Born lol you think this is some kind of marketing ploy? Its sold out of every single gamestop store in the tri state area, please...
