A few new notes about Master Chief's newest computer adventure posted on Bungie.net--online play will feature more customization, max out at 16 players.
PC gamers are still waiting to help determine the fate of the Earth in Bungie's Halo 2, which is expected to be released sometime after Microsoft's new operating system, Windows Vista, hits shelves.
By now, every PC Halo fan knows that they'll need Windows Vista to play Halo 2 on their platform of choice, and they also know that Microsoft Game Studios is handling the development internally. But there are still some specifics up in the air. Some of those details were previously announced on Bungie.net, and a few more were posted yesterday.
Jo Clowes, the Halo 2 PC project lead, answered a few questions on Bungie's Web site, and while most of the talk reconfirmed what was already known (Halo 2 PC will NOT be playable with the Xbox version), there were a few new (albeit not surprising) nuggets of info.
Online play will be configured differently on the PC. Those who play the Xbox version know that the Matchmaking system is the cornerstone of online fragfests. Searching for a game on the PC version will come with more customization options, allowing gamers to find games that suit their taste, rather than having game parameters chosen for them. Online matches will also be maxed out at 16 total players.
Clowes also makes mention of dedicated servers, keyboard and mouse support (obviously not a surprise), and text chat. The specific mention of text chat has led some to wonder whether voice chat has been excluded, forcing PC owners to use a third-party voice over IP program to let others know they just got owned.
Bungie also further explained the reason cross-platform gaming couldn't work. The PC version will have exclusive features, as well as a mapmaking tool and possibly some new maps.
"We wanted the game to be the best it could be on Windows Vista and did not want to be limited by backwards compatibility with the Xbox version," said Clowes.
The article also posted this confusing quote: "If you have a friend who is playing on the Xbox, you will be able to invite them to your game on Windows Vista, or send them messages, just like you can today on the Xbox 360."
In the article, "your game" appears to refer to Halo 2. It's unclear why an invite would be able to be sent from a Vista user to an Xbox user, as cross-platform Halo 2 gaming has been confirmed as impossible. However, it could have been a general recap of the Live Anywhere service, introduced by Bill Gates at Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference, which Bungie confirmed will extend to Halo 2.
Speaking of Live Anywhere, which aims to unite mobile phones, consoles, and PCs, Bungie does not currently plan to make a mobile phone version of the game. However, gamers will be able to access their Halo achievements info on cell phones.
Halo is awsome i still play it online never gets boring , its always full of servers. Theres just something about playing in battle creek with heavy wepons that make me smile jejeje Halo 2 PC is gonna kick ass
Well.. maybe its a game to sell their new OS but think about little children, you think Battlefield will ever be for XP dont be fools when Direct X 10 come no developer will siriusly try to make another game for Direct X 9.0c thats the real true. i am not a PC fan but i like to upgrade my parts to play everything i can. i have an IBM from 2003 and i have 2gigs of RAM (can have up to 4 GB of RAM) and a 7800 GS Nvidia Graphics Duh! AGP Board and i have like 3 games that dont even make my PC lag. i am upgrading my parts instead of all my PC, dont be fool its more Cheaper buying the Pieces that Buy a new PC. just checkout the Windows Vista Home page and see what you need to upgrade apart of the Graphics Board. and i of course buy halo 2 becouse i dont own a freaking xbox and i never finish it. Thats all from a Dude in California age 17, and i Own Halo for PC, Battlefield 2 & Ghost Recon Advance warfighter. My Halo Nick is: §niper and my Xfire: Skirmich. Cya ALL!!!!!!!!!!
well, i think that they had to much time to do this and not to many extra things are added , a thing i hate is that the halo for pc lags to much and that drive me crazy (believe me), because of the people that have 56Kb/s, downloading things and watching porn make our game stinks, i will buy the xbox 360 and by halo 2, because is more fast in the xbox and you need at least 128Kb/s. ; ) (and i have save some money) halo 2 its only for vista? if we don't have vista, we canīt play? thats sucks, i mean, i am fan of halo and MGS and its a insult for us, this blows, they have to put more things and make it compatible with xp AT LEAST!!! Yo, Peace. (in halo pc i am Celestial ; ) see you soon! )
well on the screenshots it looks like there is someone talking...whatever, once you played it on the xbox, you dont really need to play it anywhere else...and plus it looks dated already, whatever, its all good for the fanboys...
pfffffft halo sucks no question asked for a pc game. The reason this game is so popular cause its consoles first taste of true multi-player, which pc had years ago with unreal ,quake and probably more that I haven't even herd of. Thats why pc ppl hate holo it seams so old and bland for a multi-player and really thats all its got going for it, want a good mulit-player, bf2 on pc now thats kick ass
All of you losers who think Halo sucks so bad, I have a question for you. How many people are playing online every single night? Think about over 2500 people at once, on a game that is like 5 years old! Another thought, If you think this game is so easy, try putting it on "legendary" instead of "easy" I am sure it will give you a challenge. As for Halo 2, I will either mod it so I can play on XP, or wait 2 years till Vista is cheap. !!! I cant wait wait that long!!!
This is to johnnyj88 who doesn't think you can dual wield with a mouse. Left click is for the gun on the left and right click is for the gun on the right. In Halo 2 for the Xbox you can't throw grenades anyway when you are dual wielded. When you have single gun again then right click goes back to throwing grenades. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ P.S. Don't post your stupidity on Gamespot. Thank you. :)
This ladies and gentlemen is how microsoft does business. Welcome to being totally used and abused by a monopoly for computer users.
why cant we just release the game with a 32bit os system people, another thing why would they stop making PCI cards and they already know 96% of the people who own comps have PCI
I want this game so badly for the PC. I wish that it wouldn't be just for the new Windows Vista....SO that means I'll just have to keep waiting until I get a new comp in like 2-3 years. I guess it's not that bad, cause I play Halo 2 at my friend's house occassionally. I bet this will be an awesome game for the PC whenever it comes out!!
Most people think playing a first person shooter on the computer is a lot better, most people seem to hate playing on console for fps, i know i do. Aiming with one thumb and moving with another, kinda fumbly to me, and aiming with a mouse is definitely more accurate, I just hope they fix the horrendous lag problems that halo pc had.
Everyone must keep his mouth on this topic because Vista will be in many cases better than XP. Upgrade will be a must in a few months after the release. MY AGE IS 45 AND I'M PLAYING A LOT OF GAMES AND A LOT OF GAMES THAT CAN'T BE PLAYED BY CHILDREN OF THE AGE OF 15 SO BE QUIT ABOUT THAT CHILD THING.!!!!! Loved Halo and loved all good FPS. So what!!!??
Finally! I was wondering a few months ago if Halo 2 will be on the pc and now I'm certainly sure about that. I'm quit thrilled about that!!
While this is (for the most part) good news, I can't help but wonder way Bungie just can't use the same online interface from the PC Halo into Halo 2 on XBL instead of the way that it is now. WTF?!
Course they will update the graphics. but do you reckon they gonna have the quality of oblivion......hmmmmm. maybe not. otherwise they would have to pump millions in a game that has already gone past its prime. i aint paying 40 bucks only because it has better graphics..... Halo 2 is a great game, but the PC version will only be bought by kids with parents that have way too much money.! " mum i need a new PC, OS for Halo 2 PC !".... These kids need a serious reality check !
-PlayStation3- Halo is the worst game series in my opinion. Just horrible. I don't see what's so fun about it... WARNING! FANBOY! WARNING! FANBOY! Lmfao, just because PlayStation doesn't have a "Halo killer" lol. Good luck with that, go hate your opponents and grapple with your loyalty in a hole somewhere.
Everyone will get Windows Vista no matter what. It will be like comparing Windows 98, to Windows XP.
"Halo is the worst game series in my opinion. Just horrible. I don't see what's so fun about it... " nice job Sony fanboy
exclusives.........map editor............ *drools* halo 2 only running on vista.........having to wait 2 years until a lot of vista bugs are squashed......
Too bad its for Vista. If not i would be getting it. This PC version wont sell well cause of it. Hopefully they change their minds and give it to us on Windows XP. Hey, are we not already supporting M$ by using their OS
There have been some pretty ignorant statements made in this thread. Halo2 doesn't have good enough graphics for PC, it's too old? Do you really think Bungie would be doing the conversion (remember that they didn't do the Halo PC conversion), and that Microsoft would be using this as a Vista launch title and marketing tool if they weren't going to seriously pump up the graphics? What would be the point of simply porting a 2-year-old game to DirectX 10 if you don't up the graphics? This game won't sell well because it's 2-years-old? People said that about Halo PC and that game was on the bestseller charts for over a year! There may be better looking PC games out there, but for multiplayer gamers it's all about the gameplay. Why do you think people still play pre-Source Counterstrike, Battlefield 1942, and Starcraft?
Halo 2 still rakes in over 20 million online games per month almost two years later. That doesn't include custom games and other types. For a console game that's amazing. Over rated my a$$ !
Sounds interesting...but how about new weapons/levels or enemies? I just hope they put more stuff in the game...is not like with time the game has gotten better...the games is getting old and fresh stuff is like NOT optional.....
by the time i upgrade my OS to vista HALO 2 will be 6 years old and will be available in the bargain bin for $10
They already confirmed that Halo 2 will NOT use DX10, so putting it on Vista really IS purely for the sake of selling Vista. Not that it'll work for a 2year old game
HALO SUCKS its overrated and boring and way to easy. its a FPS made for kids that suck at FPS so if you like it or think your good at it you are a noob. i like the xbox too , im no fanboy . halo is a freaking joke and im sick of all you 13 year olds thinking it rocks
Is halo 2 a good game? yes. Did it change my world? No. will I upgrade my PC/OS to play a port of a 2 year old console game? HELL NO! While Im sure a lot of people will appreciate the refinements made for the PC version, its going to take something a whole lot bigger than this for me to upgrade...
man why do people complain about vista, its a OS and everyone knows that you have to upgrade your OS eventually so stop complaining and look at the positives and if you still dont like it dont buy it and get a MAC for all I care but shut up already
How you ppl dare to say that "this game is gonna look like sh*t" and say that it's already outdated graphics if screenshots for the PC version of this game HAVE NEVER BEEN RELEASED!! at least wait unitl they release them to judge them. yeah, crysis looks cool but at least we have seen the trailer. Let's give bungie the chance to surprise us. I mind, this game requires Vista, which means that it'll show DirectX 10 technology with this game!! I mind, *begins sarcasm* directx 10 must have at least one or two good features *ends sarcasm* after all, we've been already living 2 years with directx 9!!
"Because a lot of the Gamespot posters are just teen kids, in the 14 to 16 year old range. And while it's pretty easy for a teenager to ask for a video game for a birthday or Christmas, it's probably not so easy to convince a parent to buy a brand-new operating system for one of the computers in the house--especially if they don't want to upgrade yet. You'll find that most of the really critical attacks on gaming message boards are ultimately born of teenage angst and low attention spans." Oh my gawd thank you. Stupid kids are so ignorant.
@ dbeddow:: 512MB RAM required for vista, sir. 1GB for Vista Premium. seeing as 1GB has been the standard for several years now, this will pose no difficulty to anyone who would seriously want to upgrade. do your research!
"Hey! I'm sending you an invite to stop playing Halo 2 on your Xbox, boot up your computer, and play Halo 2 on your computer instead!" Dumb.
Oh I can't wait for Halo 2. I hope to god they hae bots and I pray the modding tools are good, I want to make my own SP levels!
When Bungie said that you can invite people playing Xbox to join your game on Windows Vista; it is pretty obviously implying that they would have to switch their platform. Just like how Microsoft said that you can recieve Xbox 360 invites on your Mobile Phone, but will have to join by switching to the 360. It's pretty clear what Bungie was trying to say. Also, just because Bungie didn't mention support for voice chat doesn't mean that it won't have it. Bungie made it clear that they will release more details later on, and they did place an "etc" after text chat. Try reading a little more carefully Gamespot, before making assumptions (assumptions make an ... out of you and me).
