MK vs. DC ships 1.8 million, follow-up incoming
Midway gets much-needed cash injection from brisk sales of its PS3/360 fighting series-comic book crossover; next MK game already in development.
After months of making progressively grimmer headlines, Midway Games today had some much-needed positive news. The Chicago-based publisher announced this morning that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe has shipped 1.8 million copies worldwide since its release last November. The decently reviewed game is available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in both a regular version ($59.95) and a "Kollector's Edition" ($69.95). (Note: GameSpot originally reported the game sold 1.8 million copies, and regrets the error.)
"Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort," said Mortal Kombat creative director Ed Boon in a statement.
Then, the developer announced that work has begun on a follow-up. "We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future." It was unclear if the game in question would be a direct sequel to the T-for-Teen-rated MK vs. DC series or an original installment in the normally M-for-Mature-rated franchise.
Today's sales report comes none too soon for Midway, which has been staring down the barrel of a financial gun since last December. That's when the company revealed it had until mid-January to pay off $150 million of $240 million in outstanding loans. Earlier this month, it got a reprieve, with a first and second group of creditors agreeing to repayment deadline extensions.
this game rapes soul calibur 4. except for the fact they they havnt fixed the obvious imbalance of a few characters. my sugggestion is to remove supermans retarded "infinate" and give catwoman and extra move or something that wont make her the absolute worst.
About the DLC - it might be ready, but Midway has to pay M$ to release it, considering the debt, DLC can yet be delayed for some time.
Mortal Kombat not as good as street fighter? I will grant you that in the 2D world SF2 remains untouched, but remember not that long ago SF and MK both went 3D. While neither of their first entries were a Tekken or Soul Caliber...or even a virtua fighter, MK was the better of the two.
one of the greatest games of the year !!!!!
Mortal Kombat Vs. Street Fighter Come Soon
Mk vs Tekken Vs Soul calibur vs street fighter.
So none of that DLC they mentioned...
I always loved mortal kombat games, can't wait to own it
This game is good not quite as good as street fighter games but mortal kombat games have never been as good as streetfighter so i did not expect it to be. however this game is good in its own right. glad i got it.
i thought it folped gald it hant its the best beat um up online without lag
No offense to anyone who owns or likes this game. But just because you have "shipped" 1.8 million copies. Doesn't mean you have "sold" 1.8 million copies. Local Stores in my area show plenty of copies on the store shelves, but not alof of them are selling. Just my two cents.
lol 1.8 million... So many other better games out there that don't even sell that much..
MK vs Marvel vs DC that should hold me over till XBLA gets off their tails and remakes Marvel vs Capcom...or the bottem drops out of the video game market. At which point I'll buy Capcom myself and order them to make this game.
The latest is pretty good. Hard hits, great sound, really dark considering the rating. Too bad the T rating drags it down. Imagine that same game with the mood and dirtiness of say... MK2?
MK vs Marvel can't be far away.
Nah the next MK will be a whole new idea, it will be against the biggest enemies during these times. MK vs Debt Collectors
Marvel vs MK vs Capcom vs SNK vs DC vs EA Sports
I really enjoyed MKvDC for what it had. However it did not have much. Its lack of modes and unlockables is laughable. I honestly don't care about a new game right now, I want to hear about DLC for this game that cost $60 but only had $30 worth of content.
Just... a little... farther... Ugh!!
really? who bought that garbage. Midways made a good mk comeback with deadly alliance then screwed it back up every time since. Mk needs to go the route of DOA and Tekken...Be a proper fighting game.
Thank goodness Midway is still on it's feet, and I really hope that the next MK game is just a regular MK franchise game; granted I did like MK vs DCU, but I'd like to hear some dialogue that's not too corny for the MK fighters and a new and interesting storyline. Hey, maybe Liu Kang will finally be a human again!
why dont they do a mk vs street fighter? its like the old og's of fighting games vs each other :P
1.8 million copys worldwide for 3 months isn't that good, but with junk like wheelman coming out i wouldn't be shocked if midway declares bankruptcy by the end of the year
MK need a complete make over lik street fighter 4.
What happened? Last I heard Midway was in huge debt and the sells were not covering enough ground. 3 weeks ago they were going under, now they are looking positively? What the hell happened?
this game was bad, i though it would be better!
I'm glad Midway decided to actually start putting effort into making an MK game that wasn't totally half-assed...money talks. I hope they keep it up for their sake.
The New Mortal Kombat: MK vs. Marvel Only it's Johnny Cage facing The Hulk on the boxart.
Go midway!!!! though recently it hasnt been doing that well its been one of long lasting great video game companies... hope u make it out great
Midway has made some of the best arcade games in history and some decent home console games. If we lose the likes of Midway, gaming loses part of its soul !! Go Midway, make a come back!!
I thought this game was gonna suck big time... glad to see I was wrong!
they deserve it.mk vs dc had a good gameplay.
YES now they have money to make a violent game again I'm gonna get this soon
So sony did make a good move on getting that exclusive content fro this.
It makes me laugh that there are some people on youtube who post comments that they'd rather DIE then play this game because of the lack of violence. There are a few gameplay issues compared to the oringinals, like jumping and moving around, but this game is very underrated and fun to play online. Its one of the best MKs yet.
Ugh, still no news on DLC? Starting to think we should give up hope...
If theres a console that deserves the title "great" its definetly the Wii. Then the PS3 and lastly the 360, why?, nothing great breaks 33% of the time. Either then that nice job Midway.
This game just arrived at my house yesterday from Amazon. I bought it on a whim, but I'm really enjoying it. Much more than I thought I would. I hope the next MK is a lot like this one (maybe a tad more violent would cool). Favorite part so far: How the characters get bruised and cut and have the appearance of getting beaten up as the fight goes on.
I own both consoles and bought Mk vs DC for the great Xbox360 :)
I do love MK vs. DC, it is pretty good. I wish that they didnt censor it so much though (ie: Jokers Finisher)
My brother's a huge MK fan so I bought him the 360 version for Christmas...he says it's pretty cool. I was thinking about getting it for my PS3. Even it's only mediocre, I'd prefer a mediocre game with a 3D feel than the new 2D side scrolling Street Fighter with lousy graphics
MK vs DC was definitely a step in the right direction for Midway in terms of the obvious effort that went into the whole package. And this comes from someone who felt that MK1 was probably the only truly decent game in the series up to that point. I'm not necessarily talking about the license tie-in, but the amount of work that went into the story mode and characters was obvious. Here's hoping that Midway can keep up this sort of quality and not return to palette-swapping shovelware for their next game.
I am surprised too. Didn't think that game would do that well. But I am glad it did well. That would be a big black eye to the video game industry to lose another developer like Midway
good for Midway. I hope they make it
Well, I'm surprised, but pleasantly surprised. I hope Midway can stay afloat. MK vs DC isn't the greatest game or even a particularly awesome fighter, but it's still the best MK game in YEARS and certainly the most playable. In fact, while i haven't picked it up, it was the first MK game i seriously considered buying since MK 4 on N64.
Great news. I like Midway.
Thats great news but want to see Mavel Vs DC Comics just think spider-man vs batman or apocalypse vs darkseid and perhaps have characters form other universes as a bonus
This month, to help Midway I've bought Rampart-psn MK Vs DC- 360 Gauntlet Seven Sorrows-XBLA Smash T.V.-XBLA Ultimate Mortal Kombat-DS I hope it helps. Good Luck.
This means that Midway still needs to pay off AT LEAST $120 million. At least they are making progress, I would hate to see them go. Especially since they have yet to produce a Psi-Ops Sequel.
thats cool but they must put next time (robin, watchmen, dark knight) & i hope that CAPCOM make a new MARVEL vs STREETFIGHTER !!!! for ps3 & x360
