Miyamoto a friendlier Steve Jobs - Star Fox developer

Q-Games founder Dylan Cuthbert would like to work more with Nintendo, says famed Nintendo designer takes hard-line approach to games.

Which tech icon does Shigeru Miyamoto most resemble? According to Dylan Cuthbert, founder of Q-Games and lead producer of the original Star Fox, the Mario and Zelda creator has a fair deal in common with Steve Jobs, the notoriously exacting Apple founder.

"[Miyamoto's] private face is different to his public face, and his style of chasing ideas and cutting through bull**** is brilliant--internally he's kind of like a slightly more friendly Steve Jobs but just as cutting," Cuthbert said in a fan Q&A on retailer GAME's Facebook page.

The developer behind the PixelJunk series of downloadable games said Miyamoto took a firm approach to game development, placing mechanical concepts before narrative trappings. Miyamoto once dismissed a design document heavy with narrative ideas and concept art from Cuthbert by asking "OK, and where's the game?"

Cuthbert did not seem to mind the chastening, though, as he said he would enjoy working on the Star Fox series again if given the chance, and had a few ideas for how he would implement the Wii U's GamePad. The last Q-Games-developed Star Fox was 2011's Star Fox 64 3D, produced in concert with Nintendo EAD.

I like how everyone is giving Jobs credit for Apples success despite Wozniak doing all the real work before leaving the company, all Jobs had to do was run a good marketing campaign.

@ZeroX91 Because Wozniak didn't do any "Real Work" - Yes, he set up the company by way of microcomputing, and was the creator of the first two Apple's, he also led core development of computer research during the very early 80's in the company, but by the mid/late 80's he retired. After that, Steve Jobs, has completely led the way, and turned the company, almost single-handedly into the multi-billion dollar corporation it is today, created a host of innovation and creativity, that fostered a new age in technology. So that's why Apple's true success IS From Steve Jobs. IT doesn't matter who "Built" the company, it only matters who "Made" the company - And jobs did that, in addition to knowing how to Market. Two things that made him and his company billionaires.

Who care about about someone saying Miyamoto's better the Jobs, most of us already assumed that. I was more interested in the fact that Cuthbert has "ideas" for Star Fox.

I think people give Jobs a bit more credit than he deserves. Take the iPod, for example. Jobs might have had the idea of an Apple MP3 player, but that's not exactly a visionary idea considering MP3 players already existed well before the iPod came out. All Jobs did was tell a team of people to make one, and shoot them down until they came up with an interface that was fancy enough for his liking. It's not like he ACTUALLY CREATED the damn thing.

I'm pretty sure this comment was meant as a compliment, but given Jobs' notoriety for being a jerk (and his lack of, well, any accomplishments other than getting people to buy into the cult of Apple) and Apple's notoriety for selling overpriced junk, it just ends up sounding like an insult.

Why do some of you see this as an insult? From an industry perspective, Jobs was a very competent leader of a large, productive company. His attitude may have put some people off, but he produced profitable results. Cuthbert calling Miyamoto a friendlier version of him isn't a bad thing at all.

@Suikogaiden pixar was originally a division of lucasfilm and went independent from them with apple money.  and ironically its because steve jobs doesnt trust medication that got him done in by cancer... that and he dont like them doctors.

Shigeru Miyamoto has to be a tough leader. Nintendo wouldn't have lasted this long without being "a friendlier" Steve Jobs. Nintendo is a videogames only company Apple, Microsoft, Sony have other things to fall back on. Miyamoto runs a tight ship but he has to. Seems someone is sourgrapes that their game idea was shot down?

Even if it makes him sound like a jerk, I have to agree with Miyamoto. A good story is fine, but I'm sick of cinematics and cut scenes popping up everywhere instead of or getting in the way of solid gameplay.

Saying he was just friendlier is kind of insulting to him

Jobs was talentless hack who's only skills were getting people to buy overpriced and trendy trash and screwing over your business partner who had real talent. And lets not forget the lovely rumor that Jobs bought his way to the top of the transplant list for a liver.

@Miollnir To be fair getting people to mindlessly buy and be phanatical about a brand name is a talent.  Don't like Apple stuff myself but the ability to get people to abandon reason and love something cause it's white with a little apple on it is impressive.

@Grimbear13 If I taped the Apple logo to a package of toilet paper and called it the iWipe, people would buy it and feel superior every time they used it.

@dawnofhero same with the iCrap, the iPoop, the IDildo... you name it and its been said about the lack of sense people have about a lower case i in front of any word... and dont forget about that apple logo.

Cuthbert should be fired Jobs style for insulting Miyamoto. A lot of people don't seem to know just how mean Steve really was. They seem to think instead that he was the Mesiah of computer electronics. This guy is upset because Miyamoto asked him where the hell is the game and rejected his game-less idea. I would ask that same question too if I was in the business of selling games.

Miyamoto isn't similar at all, just about every way Miyamoto is the exact opposite to Jobs. "Friendlier" is putting it too lightly, friendly and business is just two different things. If it was Jobs instead of Miyamoto, Cuthbert would have been fired on the spot for not understanding Nintendo's philosophy. The way Miyamoto handles employees, handles projects, handles ideas, handles just regular fans, his openness and inspiration is exactly opposite to how Jobs was while achieving in similar goals; not to mention Miyamoto has a successful family life. It would be more accurate to say that "Miyamoto a even more friendly Bill Gates".

Honestly, that sounds like an overstatement. There are many creative, great minds in the game industry.

I've always wanted to be a fly on the wall during creative meetings that involve Shigeru Miyamoto. A Japanese fly of course, so I could understand what he was saying.

@hadlee73 Dude, just do what I do. Buy a comfortable lawn chair, an obnoxious sunhat, and some snacks, fly to Japan, and sit outside the meeting room. Just print up a badge beforehand so security won't kick you out.

I like Miyamoto's approach to creativity. He goes straight into the work and not worry about the negative attention from the public. He works for the love of his product and not just make something for quick money. Love is how he shaped part of the gaming industry. I hope he continues to succeed for a long time.

Dont know why, but the word Friendlier was a tongue twister to me while I read the headline.

I wish I could be friends with Miyamoto, he seems like the kind of guy that is just very friendly.
