Console version of Mojang's open-world game sold between 40,000 and 60,000 copies every week from October 29 to November 19.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition sold between 40,000 and 60,000 copies per week during the period of October 29 to November 19, according to data from Mojang Studios provided to Gamasutra. Sales of that caliber mean the game generated between $800,000 and $1.2 million every week during the time.
Total sales for Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition as of November 19 reached 4,476,904. This is up from the 4 million copies that series creator Markus "Notch" Persson revealed had been sold as of October 1.
Though 40,000 to 60,000 copies sold per week may sound like an impressive figure, sales of Minecraft: Xbox Edition are actually slowing down. During one period in August, the game was selling at a rate of 17,000 copies per day, driving revenue of $340,000 every 24 hours.
By comparison, the PC and Mac versions of Minecraft have sold 8.2 million units.
Upon launch on May 9, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition became profitable in just one hour, selling more than 400,000 copies during its first 24 hours on sale, and breaking all previous Xbox Live arcade digital sales records. The game reached 1 million in sales in just five days, and dethroned Call of Duty from the top of the Xbox Live activity chart for one week in October.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios, the Scotland-based shop that built the Xbox Live Arcade titles Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Banjo-Tooie. It retails for $20. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.
Oh, and I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea - as a doubter of how fugly the game is I avoided it for a long time... but this is one of the best open world sandbox games ever. It is just plain awesome to play - unless looks are all you are into.
and yet they still haven't got it patched to a reasonable patch level. If you love this game please move on to the PC edition already. This is a good starter game (I started here myself) but it is a dog-turd in comparison to the PC edition. And you can still play offline mode on the PC for FREE to try it out.†
This game is fantastic, blew so much time on this and couldn't walk away. If you own a 360 and you haven't bought this then your... Well... Ummm... dumb
It is way better on PC the interface on 360 is shit, the crafting and what not though I like the splitscreen it is only vertical and vertical sucks why more games default to it is beyond me, sure if you have a 12 foot long tv it makes sense. Plus they havent updated a lot of the stuff like breaking stairs still gives you just the wood back in the 360 version. Also did they buy yet another exclusive deal or something or does everyone just hate PS3? Why isnt it on there also I don't think they can buy rights to have it just on 360 since it isnt there IP.†
†@MasterBrief Minecraft on XBox is actually an exclusive deal.
†@The-Neon-Seal†Is it I kinda figured but never seen anything about them getting the exclusive
†@The-Neon-Seal†I guess I just don't see it going on next gen consoles but I could be wrong. It's kind of the same thing with all the HD collections they've been putting out now and it makes me wonder if they will do the same thing with next gen. I don't have anything against xbox except that they do get a lot of exclusive stuff like the minecraft thing and the DLC stuff for Skyrim. I don't mind if games are exclusive but when they are on all 3 platforms and then you only give DLC to one that's pissing on fans. Other than that I like xbox it is an all around good system for the most part user friendly hate the paid online but it's no wonder it's so popular. Yes ps3 is more power by far but you are completely right about its architecture. The PS3 is probably the not friendly user interface I've ever used it is awful. It isnt hard to navigate but some stuff is in dumb places, theres a lot of loading for icons and lag on lots of stuff at times. Thing with Bethesda is they've had time to figure out the ps3's coding and all that because I know they had trouble with DLC for Fallout 3 but that's been forever ago and true Skyrim is a bit newer so it has had changes to systems and such but I just don't buy that they couldn't have got DLC out by now. I would own all systems if I could. I have ps3 and pc just missing xbox. The fanboy wars are stupid both sides have pros and cons and both are obvious on each system.
†@MasterBrief††@The-Neon-Seal Notch doesn't have to be involved. Mojang can look after more then one project and it's been ported by a that Scottish company anyway. As for next gen, it has a console fan base now so I can't see the point in not continuing it for many year to come and it does update a lot faster then PC so soon it will have caught up. As for your comment on consoles themselves; I like both the 360 and PS3. Only just got a PS3 mind you and it is indeed more powerful (could probably run full world minecraft) but that power is hobbled by a horrible arcitectural design which has been undoing of many 3rd part developers, most resent and high profile of which are Bethesda although they are apparently getting to grips with the coding/memory problems now. I don't agree with all this arguing between console owners, it's rather quite petty.
†@The-Neon-Seal†lol next gen minecraft? I was under the impression he wanted to move on to different games. Seems everyone goes with xbox even though ps3 is superior, dont start a war please, but I guess I see their side if they would have to choose which I dont think they do but they would go with 360 as it is very popular. I dont approve of all the exclusive dlc and all that stuff just shows you dont really care about all your fans in the case of the Skyrim DLC that is. I will keep playing Minecraft on PC I thought the xbox one was awful since it doesnt get updated much I guess and I hate the interface.
†@MasterBrief Yeah, they signed a deal. Don't think they'll be going with playstation next gen either. Impression I got from Mojang was that their XBox all the way.
†@MasterBrief† Your PC version released in 2010 july or something and sold more than 8 million, but the 360 version released in may 2012 and sold 4.5 millions....It took the pc version like 3 years but on xbox 360 it took like 5 months or so.....so stop being nerdy and get a life
†@dobasameen†ok did I say anything disputing sales? No Im well aware that almost everyone owns a 360 and everyone seems to love minecraft so how about you get a life and stop being a stupid troll douchebag†
i may just have to get this game just see what all the hype is about, from all the graphics i have seen like a shit load of crap
It's not even a game. †It's a waste of time with awful graphics.
You like building? †You like blocky graphics? †Go pick up a copy of Duke 3D, and make maps in the Build engine!
It may be $20 (or $27 for PC version), but there is lot to do in this game. I played the Xbox 360 Edition for about 268 hours. I did not think I would get into this game much. I will admit it was boring at first, until I got hooked to the core of the gameplay, which was building things and the survival mode. It is fun with friends and family.
†@Flint247 268 hours? you got time to burn
†@steelmouth†It takes time to build things on this game.
†@Flint247††@steelmouth And it takes time to burn things in this game :P Flint and steel, tnt someones massive pixel art pic that took hours, oops may set the corner on fire slightly. Seriously though build awesome stuff then turn off autosave and get some mates over with a couple of beers and trash that world :)
†@TrueGB they'll prolly have it on sale around christmas or new years, the bigger more popular stuff tends to get put on sale then plus they would prolly like to hit that 5 million mark before the end of the year to look good on financial reports.
I keep reading about this games sales every few weeks. I wish I was more excited for sales...
Congrats once again to minecraft. See you in a few weeks in another sales article.
Game continues to be a monster with sales! †I have it on both 360 and PC and I have to admit, the 360 version with the recent update is very worthy especially for those that simply don't enjoy PC gaming. †I have a few friends who I play with on it and they'll be getting it on PC soon I think.
†@HyperWarlock You would hope so what with being out for 2 more years. Any chance of PC 4 player co-op? No didn't think so :P
†@deathwatch28†Lol, are you serious? Try 100 player co-op.
†@rowdyinc††@hector530††@HyperWarlockYep fail. Anyway 100 players on one pc not going to happen. Two players on one pc not going to happen. The main difference is accessibility (sorry long words used around children), any decent gaming rig is around £1000 where as an xbox is around a hundred pounds. Not everyone has rich parents. Even though I've worked for everything I own which is both (PC and xbox) not everyone can.
I'm not paying $20 for this game when most gamers either got it for FREE or paid only $10. When XBL gets this on sale maybe I'll take a look.
†@blackace†No one got it for free. The only people that did, won them from competitions from people like Major Nelson or 4J Studios or Notch himself.
If someone has said they got it for free or half price, they're lying to you. People had assumed this idea, but it was proven to not be the case.
†@blackace Who got this for free and how? If you have a pirate copy yarrr be thrown off xbox live me heartie.
