I wasn't a Platformer fan either. This is the game that actually got me to try some other indies and platformers. Psychonauts is THE platformer for non-platform gamers. Can't wait to finally see a sequel for this game. I just hope that can achieve the same head-trippy stuff and great gameplay while keeping it new and fresh.
[UPDATE] Markus "Notch" Persson says he is "serious" about helping Double Fine boss Tim Schafer get sequel to 2005 adventure game off the ground.
The 2005 cult hit Psychonauts could finally see a sequel with help from an unexpected source, as Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson today offered his help in getting the game off the ground.
The tweets were in response to a new interview Schafer gave to Digital Spy. In the interview, Schafer said he had pitched Psychonauts 2 "several" times, but without any luck.
"I would love to do Psychonauts 2. I've actually pitched that to publishers several times and no one has taken the bait so far," he said.
As for how Psychonauts 2 could see the light of day, Schafer said it's an issue of money.
"I'd love to do that game, but I'd have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars. That's all," he said.
The original Psychonauts was released in 2005 on the original Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC. An adventure title, the game casts players as Raz, a young man with extraordinary powers. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review.
[UPDATE] Persson has subsequently updated his Twitter feed to say that Schafer has expressed a willingness to talk about the possibility of creating Psychonauts 2. However, he also cautioned that an open line of communication is not the same as a done deal.
"Me and @TimOfLegend are talking to each other via email, and he's cool with me saying whatever I want about it. He's, like, super awesome," Persson tweeted. "Nothing has been decided either way, but he asked me if I'm going to GDC. I assume he's going to rob my apartment when I'm gone.
"Anyway, please don't get your hopes too high yet. Everything is extremely vague! I'm going to get crucified if we can't make it happen, haha. Gah," he later said.
Now there's a sequal I'm happy to see. Not a massive platform fan, but this was one of those really fun underground games. Trippy as hell, just like Uni dayz :-)
Psychonauts is a great game. I can't recall a game that game me such an fun psychedelic experience like Psychonauts. I always wondered why was there never a sequel made right after, or even instead of brutal legend.
Got to love Persson. From the Quake invitation to resolve the dispute to him offering help with (a game I liked too) the sequel to Psychonauts, that guy's awesome.
Seeng the sense of humor in his tweets, I will be really dissapoined if Psychonauts II doesn't happen.
Just love the way Persson is using the humongous amount of money he made with Minecraft.Indie game producer, doesn't sound that bad an idea, does it ?
Wow. Another reason for my hopes to get up on the possibility of this game being made. I am terrible at finishing most games, abut the original Psychonauts was something I blasted through twice. Waiting for it to come on PSN to download so I can't trade it again.
It's great that this unusual, underappreciated game gets some help from another person who also knows how to do unusual games.
Psychonauts is surely needs sequel. but if minecraft creator help creat it, don't make it with minecraft like graphic
hell yeah! Psychonauts is one of the few adventure games I ever bothered to play all the way through.
If they actually funded it themselves I would buy it at full price day 1 assuming that it ends up being a good game.
My twin sons love this game! I can't seem to get into it but they love it. I guess it's one of those break-the-mold type of games and from the looks of it, with how my kids are addicted to it, it seems to be doing rather well. I wonder how well Minecraft will do on the 360?
:) After being spoiled by the franchise names, Psychonauts gave me my first good look and appreciation of indie games!
One of my all time favorite games...I remember Psychonauts was released about the same time as Good vs. Evil and neither were a commerical success, but the critics gave them both rave reviews. I would like to see more games developed like these that have great creativity and imagination. Really looking forward to this sequel.
Not to be rude but making ONE game that is very popular doesn't make you the authority on game creation. Make a few awesome games and then maybe I'd care.
@lindallison how weird- I was about to say pretty much the same thing. TIE Fighter needs to return. X-Wing would also be most welcome. Plus we know Holland is up for making it happen.
HELL YES! I am cheap and don't make many release day purchases, but this would be one. If you never played Psychonauts... do it now. The twisting sidewalk was one of my favorite visual features ever in a game. Amazing.
Duuuuude, Yes! Please! The first one is one of my favorite games! Somebody give him some f***ing money! I'm gonna go on Double Fine's website later and buy some merch, get them another straw.
I have to say, the most pleasing gaming news I've read in a while. The writing and voice acting in Psychonauts is fantastic.
THE GAMING GODS HAVE HEARD OUR PRAYERS! LET PSYCHONAUTS 2 BE UNLEASHED IN A GLORIOUS DISPLAY! ALL HAIL SCHAFER! ALL HAIL NOTCH! ALL HAIL PSYCHONAUTS!
I'm actually playing through Psychonauts again. I forgot how ugly some of those kids were. My guess is they don't have a dentist at camp. Fun game.
Psychonauts is a superb game and that's a very cool gesture from Notch. We need more people like this in the industry.
OMG! I really really really hope they make a sequel, it would be a wish come true. I loved the original to death.
Psychonauts was definitely one of the most pleasant surprises I've had in over 30 years of playing video games. In regards to controls and basic gameplay style, it really didn't bring anything new to the "platformer" genre; just saying it was "solid" is probably fair. Other aspects of the game, however -- in particular, the quirky characters and humor -- were absolutely top-notch and provided wonderful entertainment. I'll have to force myself to keep my expectations for Psychonauts 2 low; not quite knowing what to expect from the original title was one of the things that made it such a pleasant surprise.
Psychonauts is the funniest games of alltime.Funnier than Papermario 2 and the Mario a Luigi rpgs. This one of those cult classic along with Beyond Good and Evil which really define you as a core and hardcore gamer.A true masterpiece.
