Minecraft 1.5 update goes live

Latest Minecraft update includes new ways to play with Redstone.
The long-awaited 1.5 update for Minecraft, known as the Redstone update, has been released.
Players will automatically download the Redstone update the next time they run the game client. The main changes in the update involve various ways players can make use of Redstone, including daylight detectors that can trigger circuits depending on the time of day.
The game also tweaks texture packs and allows for animated textures.
Meanwhile, Mojang says it is already working on another update. "1.5.1 already is on its way," says the Mojang blog. "We plan to snapshot this tomorrow, and hopefully get it out as soon as possible."
The full changelog for Minecraft 1.5:
- Added Redstone Comparator (used in Redstone logic)
- Added Hopper (collects items and moves them to containers)
- Added Dropper (similar to Dispensers, but always drops the item)
- Added Activator Rail (activates TNT Minecarts)
- Added Daylight Sensor
- Added Trapped Chest
- Added Weighed Pressure Plate
- Added Block of Redstone
- Added Nether Brick (item)
- Added Nether Quartz and ore
- Added Block of Quartz, with half blocks and chiseled variants
- New command: /scoreboard
- New command: /effect
- Containers and mobs can have custom names
- Inventory management has been changed, for example you can drag-place items over slots
- Texture packs now have separate images for each block and item, and can have animations
- Nether Quartz Ore now spawns in the Nether
- Smooth lighting now has three settings (none, minimal, maximum)
- More detailed death messages
- Some hostile mobs now are harder in Hard difficulty
- Many, many, bug fixes
- Removed Herobrine

So... why not just hook up with Eloram and integrate red power into the vanilla version of the game. Oh well after using Tekkit I will never go back to vanilla minecraft.
New world on the server starting tonight. I can finally use all the redstone I find for something more than a few interesting circuits I put in my houses.
@sunyatanada76 That's been in every changelog, as far back as the alpha days. It's more a tradition than a running joke at this point.
@Scarab83 meh i just make traps and lights and auto harvesting farms :P

9 Like @Scarab83 Best part of minecraft. All of my bases have redstone wiring in the walls that activate elaborate secret doors, drawbridges, traps, strobe lights in disco rooms, and more.
never cared for using redpower so the majority of the changes dont interest/affect me plus im at the point where i cant even chop a tree down without instantly losing interest and playing something else
About time...These guys work 10 times slower than the modding community. Minecraft is a fantastic concept that enable the gamers to fully use their creativity. That said, the implementation needs a LOT of work. Plus there is no support to easily update mods which are by far the greatest thing about Minecraft. If only the Minecraft's dev were as passionate as their fans.
1 Like @Poison-tooth There's a big difference between a player releasing a mod that doesn't even have to work 100% and the developers releasing content that people will crucify them for if anything is wrong. What the developers release goes to everyone. With mods you can pick and choose. Those are pretty significant differences. Developers have to be careful and make sure that what they are doing won't throw off game balance or introduce any major issues with the game as a whole. Modders can do as they please. Not saying that modders are sloppy or don't care because some of them put out excellent content. But they don't have the same expectations from the community that the developers have. It's a big responsibility making a sweeping change to a game like this. Don't knock them for taking their time.
@Dasim64 @Poison-tooth Remember when they add new wood colors without the assorted stairs? I do. Its not just that they are «taking their time».They bathe in gold for God's sake they should be able to do way better than this.

5 Like I think it'd be cool to have a Minecraft version in the future that uses modern graphic engines and physics.
@PsiZombie For the modern graphics, look up the LB Photo-Realism x256 texture pack. It'll pretty much destroy all but the most intense of gaming computers, but it looks incredible. It's my favorite texture pack along with the original textures.

1 Like @howie1926 @PsiZombie I totally agree, totally. I just always imagine 'more'. Each and every time I play Minecraft I think "how awesome would this game be with modern tech..." .. I mean, it's just a thought :) I would sure as hell like it, having a sandbox game like this with system-shreading graphics.. would make one hell of an awesome project.
@howie1926 @PsiZombie I've been playing Minecraft for some years now, and the simplicity is charming indeed, but on the other hand I'm playing games that demand one hell of a PC / GPU... so basically I like games with ultra realistic graphics. I guess it has inspired me to think a future Minecraft to be a potential winner in becoming one of those winner titles. I love Minecraft in itself, also having it on iOS and Xbox360 (my 4 year old son loves it on my iPhone), but I just always want to kick it to high-base, making it more interesting for modern online-players :)

@Poodger @PsiZombie @Leakybubbles Of course, today there are limits.. but I'm looking at the long-run, looking how online-play gets developed (with all its flaws and crap).. single player has of course always had a heads-on because of the primary use of power, but I'm sure a MMO like Minecraft can get developed much cooler than it is now, with the technolohy available today. Like I said, it's just an idea, which I personally would love.
1 Like @PsiZombie @Poodger @Leakybubbles Of course, but there are very real limits. No one would be able to handle a realistic looking minecraft type game, and it would thus sell poorly. This is the same reason why mmo's tend to not look as stunning as single player games. It is taxing on systems to generate massive worlds that ALSO look good.
@Poodger @PsiZombie @Leakybubbles I just like suggestions being open, not being able to see the future of game development - but still seeing it as an open option since online gaming seems to get more and more interesting in ways of technology (which continuously gets better and better).
@Poodger @PsiZombie @Leakybubbles Well, there is a point of course... there are a lot of physics to be aware of, seeing that every block of the world can be torn apart or manipulated. But gaming engines seem to get more smart somehow, so why not bringing it up as a future suggestion when the technology is available? I mean, I come from the Wolfenstein / Doom 1 generation where, as an example, FarCry3 was a farcry in its self ever being able to be possible for online play on previous technology :)
1 Like @PsiZombie @Leakybubbles The word's size for one, not to mention a landscape that can be fully edited. Mineraft's world is nearly endless, it just keeps generating as you explore. Minecraft as it is now can be taxing on many computers because of memory. A high end modern graphic setting would just not work that well. The world size would have to be finite and relatively small.
At any rate, high res texture packs and shaders make this game look really good as it is.
hm, i had said during this minecon that the API update will not come until summer and many people were enraged and i was called a few names on top.
the redstone update was supposed to have come during the recent xmas holidays.

Also, there's still a lot the Xbox 360 version needs before it can get this update. The 360 version is way behind.

They should have been added an update or two ago, and they said they wont add everything the PC version has. So my question is, what beef does 4J Studios have against ****ing PET CATS, that they wont add Ocelots into the game? I want my damn Creeper protection, now!
I wish I could go to sleep and wake up 5 years from now ...just to see what Minecraft would look like 5 years from now.

I don't see why they posted this. I mean, I love Minecraft and it's one of my favorite games, but anyone who is interested in this is probably already watching Mojang.
@Mario_VS_DK The same could really be said of any game though. You could get most of your news straight from the source. And many might not check up on news about their favorite games. I myself knew the update was coming this week, but I didn't know it was today until I logged into Gamespot

Well I'm interested in the game and I played it a little, way back.
I do not follow the game that closely and I found this article interesting because it was a somewhat major update. But yeah. I'm not sure they should bother posting patch updates for games really.
There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of other things around to read though.
I'm hoping for the gtx 700 series to be announced next week but who knows.
Until then I'd rather read this than another SimCity article at least.
