Mikami: 'There aren't any real survival horror games in the world right now'

Resident Evil creator hopes The Evil Within will change the all-action focus of survival horror games.

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has said he is returning to the survival horror genre because it has become too focused on action in recent years.

"For me, personally, why I came back to survival horror is that survival horror as a genre is becoming all action now. There aren't any real survival horror games in the world right now. That is the biggest motivation for me," said Mikami to IGN following the announcement of The Evil Within.

"Having the player pick up the controller and being genuinely able to say 'Wow, I haven't played a game this scary in ages!', that is what we are after. That is the main thing we are focused on," he added.

Tango Gameworks, the studio helmed by Mikami, is aiming for The Evil Within to be a classic survival horror title for current and next-gen consoles. A 2014 release is planned.

After helping to popularise the survival horror genre with the first Resident Evil, Mikami also helped trigger its action-oriented reinvention with Resident Evil 4.

Mikami also set up The Evil Within's story, which features three detectives arriving at an asylum after a mass murder. The lead detective is knocked unconscious and awakens in a different location, unaware of where he is.

The game's weapons will include handguns, knives, and axes, and players will also be able to set traps for enemies. But "heavy weapons" such as machine guns will not feature.

Art director Naoki Katakai added that "I think one of the things people want from Shinji Mikami is a horror game, but since there aren't very many really satisfying horror games anymore we wanted to make a game that we felt was satisfying, that we felt was scary."

RE4 wasn't survival horror either, Shinji.  Also, my second thought here was "hah, someone hasn't played Siren: Blood Curse"

Pfffft, lost faith in Mikami, he helped push RE to action, whats gonna stop him from doing so yet again with this?

He's right. There aren't.

...on consoles...

Someone should've told him people still play games on PCs

@Icepick_Trotter

From what I've read in Japan they don't. It's like a 90%+ console market.

But yeah, as a PC gamer that was my first thought too.

Anyone here remembers resident evil 3.5? The truth is the original resident evil 4 was supposed to be resident evil 3.5 and capcom was planning on concluding the entire franchise with that. But Mikami as the father of resident evil did not want to , so eventually we got the resident evil 4 we have been babbling about for years. Resident evil is far more than just a "horror" game, as a fan of the franchise, i would not even say that it is any scarier than the recent horror games such as amnesia and etc, but just as the rest of the older titles every old resident evil had a lot of things to discover, a lot more strategies for those speedrun players to choreograph. Those RTS are barely made for modern games because they are simply so simple that we do not even need to think to be good at them, such as resident evil 6 which is only about shooting zombies. Yes of course, Mikami might have missed quite a few contemporary horror titles, but it does not make him an inferior game developer. remember Clover? God Hand? the first Devil May Cry? Vanquish?and so on.

I have got a lot faith in his games.

I agree with the statement. I quite RE at RE5. Everything since then has been a complete pile of CRAP.

If you only released the first Resident Evil 4 you were working on this could've been completely different, I still remember when Mikami said "Don't pee your pants." when he showed the trailer at 2003 E3.

No I don't really care for this genre at all. I like horror just not in video games

The trailer looked very generic... like they were trying to combine horror monsters together.

Looks like it has the potential to be a good game. Ill be watching out for it in the future. I wonder if it's a first person or third person game.

'There aren't any real survival horror games in the world right now'

Let's see here.....
1) Amnesia
2) Slender
3) Silent Hill
4) Dead Space 1&2 (3 is not a survival horror, it's a bloody action game)

5) Fatal Frame

There's others I can't think of at the top of my head, but Survival Horror does still exist, it's just not accomplished as often as it used to be.

scarlloty

@feleas Altough I agree with some in your list I disagree with others aswell... Silent Hill series is dead... The new games bored me to death so much that I can't help but feel frustrated towards what it became. I would rather play the first 4 titles (ye, The Room wasn't that bad at all) multiple times than the new ones once again. Dead Space 2 wasn't as tight as the 1st one, and the 3rd was just a bad joke... Way to fucking ruin good games. Fatal Frame is still awesome but the fact they made it exclusive to a nintendo system was a stab in the heart for me... I wanted to enjoy those 2 games and I am forced to buy a wii to do so... One game You should add to your list is Siren Blood Curse. It was a great game and really underrated... Too bad it's a sony exclusive.

@scarlloty @feleas Siren Blood Curse. I honestly never heard of that. I'll look it up. Thanks for pointing it out!

@dussan2 @feleas yes and with current releases we got, Slender, Amnesia. Both games are less than a year old.

@feleas Completely true. Great Ranking:). I personally am enjoying Slender: The Arrival right now. I think there are criteria for survival horrors that the game should have to be great. You may laugh but Resident Evil Outbreak has all elements.
1.Stabile Camera - not knowing what is around the corner is a great way to shock like the old games show.
2. Being outnumbered - being in an hostile enviroment alone makes you afraid of every step you make.
3. Weapons that wear off - this is of course one great factor of fear, even the flashlight going off because of weak batteries is a great addition shown in Haunt; The real Slender Game.
4. Enemies appearing from when you least expect them or when you expect them from the front and they drop from a vent right behind you makes me jump all the time :).
This are my 4 important points of Horror what do you think, am i right or do you have some other thoughts? :)

@Mar_Sama @feleas You're right, I agree, it's just things have fallen behind since RE:4. 2 was by far the greatest RE game I've ever experienced. THAT ZOMBIE THAT'S A CORPSE IN THE EXAMINATION TABLE THAT GETS UP! OMG!

Grenadeh

@Mar_Sama @feleas The thing that took away from the SH of Outbreak was that you were needlessly infected from the getgo. You were dead anyway so you didn't really give a shit what happened in the game, you just hoped you won before you reached 100% infection.

Mar_Sama
Mar_Sama

@Grenadeh @Mar_Sama @feleas Didn't you actually think that also was an Survival aspect? Getting the game done as fast as possible because of a time limit? It also heated up the pressure for me :)

I'm excited for the next 5 years or so.  Game development takes a long time, and it's only been recently that there's been a large outcry of how games are degrading quickly... how there are no real surivor horror games, tactical shooters like the original GR or rainbow 6, and so on.  Devs are starting new IP's to get back into that market because they themselves like to play these kinds of games.  I hope to see games like this one as well as takedown and ground branch as well as a lot of new IP's taking (at least some) games back to the level they were at when I started gaming.  Back to the type of games that got me into gaming.  It's been over a year since the last time I bought a game, and months since I rented something I actually wanted to play.  There are just no games that appeal to me anymore considering it was resident evil, operation flashpoint, ghost recon and rainbow 6 that got me into gaming.

Yes please bring back the scare, if this does well then we could see the return of the survival horror phenomenons like Clock Tower, Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, D, and even Eternal Darkness (which Nintendo already renew its trademark).

Prats1993
Prats1993

@leeko_link Eternal Darkness was amazing, loved how it broke the 4th wall at times and turn down your tv volume and just troll you by pretending to delete a save file, lol.

I like the bloody Ringu coming out of pool of blood.  Not so much a fan of wires and torture tools.  Those are just blood and gore horror.

Shanks_D_Chop
Shanks_D_Chop

@Terransheep I did think the same as you till someone's comment about it being someone making a trap rang true. I think that the guy with the barbed wire is your player character. Notice the panic when he accidentally cuts himself and spills blood? The frantic rush to wipe off the blood as the  creepy blood bitch pulls herself from the floor... Imagine that as a game mechanic. Every time you take the slightest wound you'd be at the risk of her cropping up and hunting you down. I dunno 'bout you but that'd add an element of scare to the game for me. I could be wrong but that's how I'm seeing it.

Terransheep
Terransheep

@Shanks_D_Chop @Terransheep  sorry i totally didnt know the system right there. that's interesting concept

Terransheep
Terransheep

@Shanks_D_Chop @Terransheep I like the horror that play with ur imaginations. not blood/gore horror.  Ever heard of phrase that "your imagination is powerful than anything"?  that's exactly what I like the most. Same as novels are almost always better than movies because you hear yourself speaking inside your head. Create character's voice as you read their dialogs. Making up environment as you read the novel eg. what kind of room they're in.

Shanks_D_Chop
Shanks_D_Chop

@Terransheep @Shanks_D_Chop Nowt to apologise for buddy! Like I said, could be misinterpreting that bit. But yeah, a very interesting mechanic if it's the case. SERIOUS incentive to avoid taking damage.

sinofsinners

@Terransheep He was using the tools and barbwire to make a trap, as stated traps will be a part of the game.

I consider myself Mikami lover and have played almost his every game since past 10 years, will play this and am sure it will be fun.

But considering the premise, lack of combat and big budget, Its hard for me to even think it will be financially successful. People hate horror especially interactive and satisfying a big budget will be hard.

Anyways best of luck to them and can't wait

It's funny to see Amnesia worship here and some fellas talking about Mikami ruining RE.

That's not even funny, such an ignorance.

@124C1 Amnesia was boring, Mikami will show everyone how its done.

MJV1989
MJV1989

Yeah, the sad truth is that almost every single horror game that has become a series, will end up with more action-oriented gameplay... But it is kind of natural, because you've seen the monsters once and are familiar with them in the sequels. Just look at the Dead Space series (I like all 3 main games a lot): the original was a really good and tense horror game with atmosphere, but the sequels have the same stuff in a different setting, so you become familiar with the necromorphs and they simply are not as scary. If horror games want to remain scary, they must never get sequels and the developers have to always create something new. You can't change everything in a game and then call it Dead Space 2 or 3, that would just make the fans angry.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

You mean other than Amnesia which no offense is scarier than RE.

Talavaj
Talavaj like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

What made RE1 so good ? Fear ? Lack of Save Points ? Clumsy combat ? Bad camera ? Difficulty ?

Amy, game with ton of homages towards the old school horror, comes out and: 3/10 because - Lack of Save Points, Clumsy combat, Bad camera, Difficulty.

If a RE1 came out now it would be utterly trashed exactly because of the things that made it good before. Nobody makes traditional horrors anymore because people are hypocrites.

Ledah
Ledah

@Talavaj Don't forget the puzzles and exploration, in that era exploration in video games was a very fun and "scary" thing to do, something that today is so generic even in games that offer exploration as a main feature, it wasn't just the jump scares or the lack of save points.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@Talavaj  Yes all of those things contributed. Mostly it was the lack of ammo and the difficulty of combat that created an environment of tension. It wasn't like new games where enemies dropped ammo so you could kill anything you wanted. It was the anxiety created by knowing that if you screwed up, there was a potential you might have to restart the entire game.

And the biggest reason for this is because Capcom went off and made Resident Evil into a sodding cover shooter and screwed over all their old fans.

Navardo95

I want this game to succeed....I TRULY want this game to succeed and crush RE6 to tiny little pieces so that the dirt of a  company known as CAPCOM opens their eyes and realize that true survival horror fans still live and breathe in large numbers!! Resident Evil 6 was a colossal middle finger to survival horror fans and sadly shows us that capcom are fully ready to shamelessly butcher a fantastic franchise in every way possible..

If this is a huge success both in quality and sales wise...this will make many greedy devs realize that not all of us are brain dead casuals that think gaming revolves around COD!!!!

Grenadeh
Grenadeh like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Navardo95 They already did that long before RE6, which is what most of you folks fail to understand. Resident Evil was permanently ruined before 2000 ever rolled around.

Nightelf123
Nightelf123

@Grenadeh @Navardo95 resident evil was ruined when capcom started developing the  final version of resident evil 4.

and also resident evil 1 remake that been released in 2002 is the best resident evil survival horror game.
