I don't really care about the looks, but I would like to know if I need to by a new entertainment center because its too large to fit in my current one.
Microsoft's face of Xbox Live not keen on Sony not showing off the hardware.
Microsoft's Major Nelson--aka Larry Hryb--has criticised one aspect of Sony's PlayStation 4 unveiling last night: that Sony didn't actually show the console.
"Announce a console without actually showing a console? That's one approach," said Hryb on Twitter. Last night, at its official PlayStation 4 unveiling, Sony showed off the PS4's UI and controller, but there was no sight of what the machine itself would look like when it's released later this year.
"Love to know what you thought of the presentation after you have a moment to think it over. I'll share my thoughts on the show this weekend," added Hryb.
Hryb posted an E3 countdown on his blog earlier in the year. Microsoft is expected to formally announce its next Xbox in the coming months--presumably Microsoft will make sure to actually show off the machine when it does.
Sony will release the PlayStation 4 later in 2013, though a price and date for the console were not formally set.
During its PlayStation 4 unveiling, Sony confirmed that the next-gen console would feature a PC-like architecture and x86 processor. The publisher also announced new entries in the Killzone and Infamous franchises, before unveiling new IP in the form of Drive Club and Knack. Media Molecule showed off a new sculpting prototype, Capcom unveiled its new title Deep Down (working title), and Square Enix promised to unveil a new Final Fantasy game at E3.

I love listening to the Sony fans...it's very entertaining. Most of them (not everyone) sound like they're in junior high...like the moron calling people names just because he's upset that Sony didn't produce a console at their big "unveiling". And I think the analogy of unveiling a Ferrari by only showing tires and an engine design is a fair one. Sony really does seem extremely desperate going into this next generation of hardware...and rightfully so.
The only number the Sony kids should be paying attention to is 26. That's how many consecutive months now that the Xbox 360 has outsold both the Wii and PS3.
Personally, I don't care what either company manufactures as long as it supports the Oculus Rift. That thing is amazing!! I want one now!
@TiberiusJones The Wii has currently sold over 100 million units. The 360 is still hovering around early the early 70 million range. Don't call people Sony fans when you're clearly a Microsoft fanboy yourself.
Who cares what the system will look like? The specs are what matter, if it looked like a porsche and ran like the original 360 no one would be sitting around going "oh but it looks cool doesn't it?" what cheap and crappy jab. Haters gone hate.
Looks like there's one cog that won't be turning the gears.
Can we really blame Major Nelson for being upset that they haven't shown the PS4, yet? After the tragedy that was the first generation 360 (and while we're at it LOL for launching an HD system with no HDMI out), Microsoft could definitely use whatever pointers they can get on designing a console.
Oh sweet Hryb. How you took a once bad ass console and completely pussified it and overwhelmed it with social media garbage. How you made it into a console for vapids, bros, ugly couples and fat people.
I really appreciate what you did to the Xbox. I appreciate taking away features that were dear to me that were more social than you tacking on stupid apps just to get the interface to be clunky, slow and loosely resemble Windows 8. I appreciate it more because I don't even use them.
Thank you for increasing the cost of Xbox Live. Thanks for the sweet birthday present of, what, like 10MS points. Maybe I can buy a special colored facial mole for my avatar. Maybe a Lean Mean Grilling Machine prop, or kicks that look like space boots.
The Xbox is clown shoes. So is the PS3 with how it cracks at me because its plastic chassis gets mad at any temperature, hot or cold. But damn. At least those 599 dollar ridge racer dudes treat me nicer on my birthday,
@Gigas_Yuu Hmm, I load up my 360, I press the green button on the pad and BF3 loads and off I go on to the battlefield. Tried Dishonoured and same thing happens, the game loads and off I go stealthing.
I think you're doing it wrong bro
Hopefully Kinect 2.0 and Move are just added features and not forced upon us. I was thinking all XBOX at first but now I am debating which to go with first. I really feel wasteful owning 2 consoles of the same generation because they are mostly just 3rd party titles with a few exclusives going either way. I just wish sony would make a controller like the box then I would most likely go Sony.. seeing as they do have a couple more exclusives but then again I have had less than stellar experiences with there online service. Tough decisions.. I am to concerned about the hardware inside the consoles because they will be similar enough where it will make little to no difference and 3rd party devs are not going to waste a lot of time making 1 much better than the other.. just look at the PC.
I am leaning towards the BOX first and the PS4 later on in its console life.. however if the BOX makes it so I have to be online all the time or I cant play a single player game that might sway my decision.. and deal with what I feel is an inferior controller with the PS4. Also if Kinect is going to be a main focal point as far as games go and no way to turn it off I will most definitely go with the PS4... similarly if the PS4's move controller has a similar role to Kinect 2.0 I am just not going to buy the damn consoles. If they are there just for added features and certain games then thats fine. But if I am forced to use both of them when I dont want to.. I will be a very angry customer.
To be quite honest the look of the actual console is not really something that would influence the purchase for me, but regardless I think it's just an instinct to want to see what it looks like.
Don't judge a book by its cover... M$ will probably show the console and all the little kiddies will be like 'OMG its soooo pretty and awesome!!' without actually stopping to think that the games and overall power of the machine (bare in mind that the 8GB RAM in the new Xbox has to be halved for Kinect as has been leaked) will be inferior to the new PS. I can't wait to see M$'s press conference and then facepalm when they announce Kinect 2.0 and spent an hour showing us how it is pointless and doesn't work.
I understand why they didn't show it off. They wanted people to focus on what the PS4 is capable of and not what the box it comes in looks like.
Sony could pack the ps4 hardware in the ps3 body kit with the '3' crossed out and a sticker of a number 4 on top of it for all i care. wtf does the console itself matter? there is no way they could make it look bad as to no have it displaying on your cabinets. It's about its power, its features, and the games, not the pretty box around the hardware.
I think it looks bad on MS part to say something like this.
They haven't announced anything yet, but I already know what they are going to show. More Halo, more Gears of War, more Fable, more Forza and whole load of of Kinect crap.
@ahpuck This is why I simply cannot get behind the XBOX. None of those games interest me. Sony has the better exclusive titles - period. Unless anyone wants to try and argue that Gears of War is better than Uncharted? I didn't think so.
That being said, to each their own, still. But I just don't get excited about XBOX games.
I dont want to pay $100 plus for a controller that publishers might not even use to its' full potentional...
@zux2000I found out some information and a few pics about the New Xbox 720, Check it out
sony showed gamers what gamers wanted games and lately m$ has angered me they have focused too much on that shitty kinect , apps and less about 1st party games and to be honest if M$ doesn't improve ill be skiping the next box and have ps4 and wii u intill the box gets cheaper
It doesn't matter what it looks like. It only matters what it can do. And that's what they are focusing on.
This M$ guy is just fishing for negativity to try and put a downer on Sony's announcement. And if this is all he can come up with then he may as well not have bothered.
Not showing the console at the big unveiling is a letdown. What if Ferrari makes a big deal about unveiling their new car..the curtain drops and all they have is a diagram of the engine and a steering wheel. Same thing.
A desperate move by Sony to beat MS to the punch with their announcement. I know what the machine looks like doesn't matter to gamers as long as it performs, but come on, you're hyping your new console and all you have to show is a diagram of the core architecture and a controller? Just seemed rushed and unprepared just to make a point of announcing the console before your competitor.
Get it together Sony then come back when you're ready. All they did was give MS incentive to make a bigger better announcement that will not disappoint.
@spectreSE7EN do you really think they would show the console BEFORE E3 ?
think before talking xbot fangirl...go back to gaylo already
@Albaficas @spectreSE7EN fangirl? gaylo? Real mature. If you paid any attention to what I posted, you would see that I own a PS3 and an XBOX. I'm not a fan of either console. I'm a fan of gaming, so maybe you should actually pay attention before you make false assumptions.
I think as a consumer, I have the right to be critical of Sony or MS. It doesn't mean I dislike the brand or product. As I said, the PS4 is going to be great. So will the next xbox. Both, as usual, will have great titles and exclusives.
To answer your question "do you really think they would show the console BEFORE E3". You mean the way they announced the rough release date, showed the controller, and several work in progress titles, BEFORE E3? If you are a consumer electronics company as big as Sony, it is a disappointment to hype a product but not show the product. It has nothing to do with E3. It has everything to do with Sony knowing that MS was rumored to make their announcment at E3 and Sony trying to catch MS off guard. It a way, it did catch them off guard because MS changed the date of their announcement shortly after.
However, because Sony decided to make their announcement earlier than most anticipated, Sony most likely doesn't have a final design nailed down for the console so they decided not to show it. This is my theory. I thought they should have waited to make their announcment when they have something to show, that's just my opinion, and I'm not the first to voice that opinion.
I'm sure when MS makes their announcement, there will be a few letdowns on their end too. I'm sure I'll have an opinion of what they could have done better. and when I do, there will be some immature xbox fanboy like yourself accusing me of being a PS3 fangirl and tell me to go back to playing unfarted 3 or something really smart and mature like that.
If you want to have a real gaming conversation with opinions that aren't so obviously one sided, then I'd love to engage, but clearly you're the fanboy because you're obviously bothered that I have an opinion that criticized Sony. I'm a gamer, I play on the PC, PS3 and the 360. I don't limit myself to playing on one system because all platforms have something great to offer. If you're loyal to one brand that's your choice and you're missing out on a lot. But I think as a consumer of both Sony and MS products, I think have the right to be critical of both, but your response to my opinion shows that you aren't ready to sit at the adult table and have real conversations about this stuff.
@spectreSE7EN I think you could have thought of a better analogy than that. Sony showed some software and the new interface. The only thing that was missing was the hardware. To compare it to a steering wheel and a engine diagram is a bit of a stretch.
I do agree that Sony appears to be desperate. Especially when you consider the recent news about investors and the loss of profits. Did you actually watch the press conference? The controller and core architecture were not the only things that were shown. For example, and to reiterate, the new interface was on display as well as games. Which are being developed as I type this.
I also agree that Sony should get it together. Although, I can see that they're trying. Especially with what I've heard with PSN Plus, and how Sony openly acknowledged to the public that the PS3 was hard to develop games for. That is why they ditched the cell processor and went with the X86. It was stressed that Sony wants to be as developer friendly as they can be. To say they were unprepared is a bit of a stretch. I agree that it seemed a little rushed, but it was obvious that Sony went in with a solid game plan.
Finally, based off of what I saw, after watching the conference. I think Sony is getting ready for a very competitive and close race for the next generation. Sony put a'lot cards on the table, but they probably have a couple up their sleeves. They're waiting for Microsoft to play their hand. To me this is as awesome as it gets when you are a consumer. I've stuck with the 360 through this whole generation. Am I loyal to the brand? No. I like to keep an open mind. You should give it a shot.
@FutonSentinal62 "I like to keep an open mind. you should give it a shot." Okay futon, what part of my post was close minded? I'm as open minded as a person can be when it comes to gaming. Over the years, I've owned consoles from Nintendo, Atari, multiple gaming PCs, Sega, Sony and Microsoft. Curently I own a PC, PS3 and 360, all for gaming purposes. My post wasn't a biased viewpoint trying to hate on one company. I'm not a fanboy of any console. I'm a fanboy of games in general.
Obviously you didn't like my analogy. Don't be so literal. I was merely paraphrasing. Sony is a massive company and when you make a major announcement to reveal your console to the world but you fail to produce the console, it comes across as premature and jumping the gun. Do you think Apple would ever hold a press conference to announce their latest gadget but fail to produce a working example or at least a mock-up? The point of my post was to simply state that Sony should have waited. It would have looked better to have a complete presentation than to show up without the central piece...the console itself.
Doesn't matter to us gamers. The games will still be great and the console war will only breed a new generation of mind blowing games. However, don't make a big announcement but fail to produce the hardware to show for it.
@spectreSE7EN who cares what the console looks like? when do you even look at it when you play games? there is no way it could be bad looking, look at the ps3 original model, the ps2, the psp, the vita... they all look great. Who buys a console based on what it looks like?
@Centurion-Legio @spectreSE7EN Again, as I stated in my post, gamers don't care what it looks like. I'm not arguing with you on that point. But it is a failure on Sony's part to have a presentation that is incomplete. When you make an announcement this large, you should have everything together. Sony is a big enough company that has been around long enough to know this. Like you said, as a gamer, I don't care, but Sony jumped the gun and made their announcement before they had their ducks in a row is all I'm saying.
@spectreSE7EN i dont even care what the console looks like, why is everybody making such a big deal out of this? maybe they didnt even agree on a design yet! the tech is the important part, the controller is part of it so they had to show it... the games looked good, too, and that is what interested me...
@spectreSE7EN With that MS focuses on these days they will be sure to disappoint. As much as possible.
To be honest, unless they show off a brick that looks more like a PC terminal than a console, I seriously doubt that at this point it would make a difference, people already know if they want or do not want. All the specs, yays and nays, potentials and not happenings, this coming up from ps3 and things getting left on ps3 are out, other than the pricing and the look, there's nothing much else to see or know.
And I suspect Sony is holding back on pricing to get an idea of what the comptition will do
When I first glanced the headline to this article I thought it said Major Nelson takes a poop at Sony's PS4 unveiling.
They also need to focus less on the media applications and focus on the games. Everyones got a pc and internet why so desperate?
(I Own Both Consoles)
Now, who cares what the console looks like?? Its the power underneath what we need and so far im very impressed and im sure so everybody else. But i do think that this is the calm before the storm and microsoft going to reveal more than just the console and the kinect... Theres something else.
thats all the ip you think microsoft has you must be crazy even know i like the idea of the next kinect being in every xbox lets go down the half of the full list of exclusiveHalo
Gears of war
kingdom under fire
Ninety nine Knights
and way more
@Dangerous231 only about 3 of those games stand out and could compete with some of Sony's ips. most if not all of the ps3's exclusives stand out and are critically acclaimed.
@Dangerous231 ok in that list you have 4-5 "good" exclusives. Fable 1&3 and Alan Wake came out on pc as well, so no real exclusive... GOW1 as well... halo and gears is sucked out, fable hasnt been good after the first one...
Let's see, PS exclusives worth mentioning....
- God of War
- Heavy Rain
- Metal Gear Solid (at least for launch, and rising is a different series)
- Gran Turismo
- Little Big Planet
- Ratchet & Clank
There are more but these are the ones worth mentioning. Now we have 10 best selling games and game series vs 4-5 on the xbox and 15 games everybody will forget the next years... dont talk about good exclusives Xbox fanboys, cant win...
@Dangerous231 Let see.
Alan Wake not an exclusive
Forza, Halo and Gears are the only sellers on there. The rest don't do so well.In fact some of those bombed so bad they have become laughing stocks at the moment of mention.
Like Vampire Rain and Fusion Frenzy.
@Dangerous231 yeahhh im already tired of halo gears and fable and
this list made me want 2 kill my self for having a xbox
kingdom under fire
Ninety nine Knights
@Dangerous231 I stopped reading after PGR :/ The list gets more boring as it goes down.
@Dangerous231 tsk tsk tsk... you were so desperate for titles that you resorted to putting garbage games on there to add to your frivolous post
Nearly all of those games on the list are terrible.
I just pray Judgment does not go the way of Halo and Fable......
@Dangerous231 Ninja Blade. I really enjoyed that game. I would get it day1 if there was a second next gen game.
@Dangerous231 I don't know who you were responding to, but everything after Forza is irrelevant.
