[UPDATE] Xbox 360 director of product management says virtual boy simulation that was centerpiece of E3 2009 Kinect debut will not see commercial release--then says Lionhead is still working on it.

"Project Milo absolutely continues in development at Lionhead Studios, it is just not a product we plan to bring to market this holiday," he said. "The team at Lionhead Studios has always been a center of innovation and will continue to deliver against that charter." The original story is below.
One of the highlights of Microsoft's press briefing at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo was Milo, an interactive virtual boy that sensed players' emotions. In a video presentation (see below), the Project Natal title was unveiled with great fanfare by Peter Molyneux, head of Lionhead Studios, where it was developed.
At E3 2010, Milo was most notable by his conspicuous absence from Microsoft's press event, which came after a Cirque du Soleil performance at which Natal was renamed Kinect. Now, Xbox 360 director of product management Aaron Greenberg has revealed the reasons for that absence--namely, that Milo will never see the light of day at retail.
Greenberg told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Good Game show that Milo was a tech demo, and nothing more.
"Milo he's safe and sound, back in England," he said. "No, he's uh...the Milo Project is something that Lionhead Studios and their labs had developed. You know, when we unveiled the project Natal technology we showed a bunch of technology demos as part of that, and obviously that's a tech demo of technology that still exists, but right now it's not a game that we're planning to bring to market."
Kinect, the controller-free motion-sensing system that Milo helped showcase, launches in North America on November 4. Microsoft has confirmed that the camera-based system--which also offers video chat and Minority Report-like gesture control of the Xbox Live dashboard--will cost $150.
Well I'm glad to hear it hasn't been shelved. Despite all the weird press, it was the most interesting possibility the Kinect was originally advertised as offering.
Well they could at least include the Milo Virtual Boy tech demo with each Kinnect X360 attachment. For people to experiment with, Or actually make The Virtual Boy the official MS Kinnect Mascot. Release a bunch of Kinnect Ad for Television and Internet. On how the Microsoft Virtual boy "Milo" does suck like Nintendo's Virtual Boy did.. Then have Milo and The Kinnect Animals Urinate on a Nintendo Virtual boy and a Nintendo 3DS. End the ad with a screen shoot of a Tripal coiler steaming in the hallway and the sound of a flushing toilet. Fading to black with the Xbox logo..
i mean they are trying to delete the real world, this isnt funny anymore, lol as much as you want but kids in the future will use things like these
it's still kinda wild at how much technology grew since the vitual boy though.. I would EASILY buy the kinect if I had that kind of spare cash

I think Kinect is great, but does anyone else distinctly remember them saying that it was going to be $84.99? And that Milo was going to be the first released game...And that you could scan your own gear and all game characters in Kinect games would be like Milo, which was nowhere to be seen in the E3 expo? Like for real, Microsoft needs to stop screwin with us
I think if I buy Kinect near launch, I will buy it used or buy it new on ebay. $150 for a motion camera is too much, especially since they seem to not have any good titles at launch. I could buy two DS's on ebay for that price.

Honestly I was never too interested into Milo. First is no matter how advanced technology has come it's still lightyears from making a character that has the level of interactivness one would get with a real person. Programmers no matter how much time they have they can never cover even a fraction of all the diverse responses that a person could come up with. Anyone who used to play old DOS floppy disk adventure games knows... [you wake up in a dark room with a window and a door...] "look out window" [what is "look"?] "fine... Open door" [what is door?] "heck with this... Go back to sleep" Plus I always thought there was something a little To Catch A Predator about Milo.

I really would have been more interested in some Kinect Fable 3 integration .i have a speech impediment so i doubt i would be able to use Milo effectively One of the people at the Fable 3 booth said something about Milo so thus i assume its still being worked on.. just for some odd reason wasnt shown at E3...go figure.

I think it's fairly common knowledge that the Milo demo was canned and not representative of an actual product or even the capabilities of Natal. As for Lionhead Studios, I wrote them off years ago when I realized that Peter Molyneux told several bald-faced lies concerning the game Black & White. It was around this same time that many disenchanted customers started referring to the company as "Lyin' Head".
I never expected it to be anything other than a tech demo...or maybe something that came for free with the Kinect. I honestly couldn't fathom spending money to obtain a virtual child. The Milo thing shows a lot of the capabilities of Kinect, but unless they build a lot onto it, those capabilities would be better used in an actual game in my opinion (like if in Fable, you could go into a thing when interacting with people where you can actually interact with characters in the same way you interact with Milo).
@AngelCage-2 I don't blame you, but unlike a lot of people I see potential in something new and wonderful. It's a pretty standard reaction to feel negatively toward the unfamiliar. I'm sure a lot of old people recoiled at the thought of TV. More recoiled at the though of computers. People still, to this day, recoil at anything game-related. It's natural.
Am i the only one who is really damned tired about kinect gossip? Bring us Black & White for kinect and then i will consider listening!
...Let's see: Virtual Pet? Nah, i have a real cat (wich is reckless, wild and brutal as a tigger or something) and a real Rottie wich is an awesome pet... i'll pass on that. Then there's the virtual dumb friend... I have real friends, so i think i'll pass on that too and then.... oh, that was all about kinect, I really don't get the whole motion sensing thingie, don't like it at all

@Recboy, Yeah. If Milo starts eying the "Doki Doki! Majo Shinpan!" box I keep next to my TV, we're going to have problems.

I'm not dissapointed at all, I probably wouldn't buy kinect if it had Milo in it. But this is a neat idea if you could actually take this virtual person into a video game with you. I can see it now... Resident Evil: *simultaneous screaming* OMG ZOMBIES!!!!
This is why I'm waiting to see Kinect games in action. It wasn't that long ago that companies showed rendered graphics as "live action". Until I can try Kinect games at a local store or friend's place, I'm not sold. Once I try it, if it's as good as advertised, I'll buy it right away.
thats because the first demo of milo was all fake, it was just a hype thing. i doubt well ever see milo. who really cares anyways

LOL, I can barely stand my kids! I play video games to have an escape from those pressures, not to deal with another kid.
@Fusco1980 That's an interesting theory, but why the hell would any government really bother monitoring what you're going when you're in front of the TV? The only useful information is possibly the fact that you're actually in the room doing nothing. Having millions of cameras surveiling millions of couch potatoes hardly sounds like a good idea or use of money/resources.
@SuperYeti22 according to the terminator mythos, judgement day was supposed to happen in august of 1997, then according to terminator 3, sometime in 2004. so we have dodged the bullet. milo, playstation move/eye and everything else will usher in judgement day! our fun will usher in the end of the world! It is probably best if Milo doesn't make it into stores... now, if he was some kind of intelligent, talking, cute animal we would have a hit on our hands
if the tech demo was NOT staged then it could be amazing to see this technology in future games. it would feel awkward at first but it could be quite good.
I think the Milo Tech demo will become something else in the future. Maybe the technology will be used in a new RPG or adventure game by Lionhead. Who knows. I don't think this kind of technology will be thrown away.
This technology looks amazing, but I have to say, it would kinda creepy me out talking to Milo if it was as realistic as it said it was. And anyways, I would rather go hangout with a friend.
