I wonder if the Living Legends Crysis mod influenced their decision. That game really showed the potential for a good MW game.
Forthcoming PC resurrection of classic FASA franchise is set to use one of the most advanced engines on the market.
MechWarrior's rebirth as a free-to-play PC-only title was confirmed just a few weeks ago, but few details other than its multiplayer focus were discussed. Details are still scant, but the engine powering the game has now been revealed.
Crytek announced today that Piranha Games has licensed CryEngine 3 and will be using it to power MechWarrior Online. The CryEngine is known for delivering technically impressive visuals in Crytek's own Crysis games, but it has also been put to use powering online-dependant titles such as NCsoft's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Aion.
Speaking to the merits of the CryEngine for MechWarrior Online, Piranha Games president Russ Bullock said, "It is definitely the best choice for us. Both the character animation pipeline with the procedurally and physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly and allow us to develop a truly unique AAA experience based on the award-winning BattleTech Universe."
MechWarrior Online is slated to launch in summer 2012. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's recent coverage.
Also if publishing was such a problem when they wanted single player and no publisher (I'm assuming retail pubs) wouldn't take them in cause the game was SP and was on for the PC (OMG DA PIRACY!!) then why didn't they just make it a digital release on a non discriminating service like Steam, Gamersgate or Direct 2 Drive or something and keep the single player
CryEngine 3 is pretty nice. I really like Rockstar's Rage engine. That and Techland's Chrome Engine.
The video shown, I believe, is using the Unreal 3 engine, and not the CryEngine3. The video was a demonstration to provoke interest, not to represent the final product. One can hope, however...
I always loved the MechWarrior series but the Free to Play with licensing such a major engine puts me on the wary side of how bad the microtransaction system is going to be.
I was hoping they would use Frostbite 2. IMO The destructibility would have been perfect for this game.
There's such a huge lack of MechWarrior games out there (modern ones anyway). Even with the Free-to-play model, I'm still really looking forward to this game to release. Of course, a modern version of Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries would pretty much be nothing less than awesome.
My new PC should be built by then, so I might get this. They should definitely make a version for consoles as well. MechAssault was one of the better Mech games, but so much more can be done in this genre. Can't wait for Steel Battalion.
Interesting. Too bad I hate the F2P monetization model. Release a full version for 60 bucks that unlocks everything and I might buy. Sens small packages of content for 10 bucks (for 300 dollars total per 6 months, like AoE online) and you'll make me laught.
Brings back a few memories. Now bring back Terra Nova :-) F2P always makes me a wee bit wary as I would rather buy a game than spend money ingame (if that's what they intend)
Im very curious how they plan on doing F2P AND support a massive engine like CryEngine 3. Very interesting.
OK I am ready.....slowly build the hype between now and the summer with teeny bits of information released regularly. I can handle it. I have already decided to try it.
It would be even more awesome is this could be licensed to run in "Tesla Pods". Let's see how many of you Battletech purists know what those are or even piloted the "real" thing. And for the Mech Assault haters, give it a rest. No it wasn't a sim but it still was a helluva lot of fun arcade style game not to mention one of the best Xbox/Xbox Live games.
I was bummed when I read that MechWarrior would be a free-to-play title. Still, that's better than getting consolified. I want MechWarrior, not MechAssault, dammit! This CryEngine3 news is music to ears, though. A while back, somebody made a MechWarrior mod for the original Crysis. I never played it, but the videos looked good. Now, it looks like I finally get to try MechWarrior with Crysis (2!) graphics.
@Rocker6 Normally I would agree, but it doesn't specifically say that it's online only. However it does specifically say "free-to-play". So even if it is online only, the declaration of free-to-play at the very least warrants a trial of it. If you don't like it, then at least your not out of anything of value.
Too bad its online only, that adds it to the "pass" list... Otherwise,I would actually be interested in what it has to offer...
