Mass Effect 2 PS3 using Mass Effect 3 engine

Producer Jesse Houston reveals the forthcoming port has gone gold, will use visually superior technology than its predecessors.

Yesterday, BioWare community coordinator Evil Chris Priestley posted and hosted a new podcast focusing on Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3. His first order of business was to report the port of the critically acclaimed game--a nominee for GameSpot's 2010 Game of the Year--has gone gold for Sony's system. It is now on track to ship in North America on January 18 and in Europe on January 21.

After host Chris Priestley repeatedly cited the "huge" demand for the game amongst PlayStation 3 owners, he introduced the producer of the port, Jesse Houston. Houston then went on to drop a bit of a bombshell--namely, that the PS3 edition of Mass Effect 2 will have superior visuals vis-a-vis its counterparts because it is running on the Mass Effect 3 engine.

"One of the first things you're going to see is improved graphics," said Houston. "We actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and then used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. We took the content, the story, all the other assets that made Mass Effect 2, and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine. That's what we're actually delivering."

Houston went on to mention some other improvements the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 will have over its elder siblings. "The controls are geared to the PS3 controller, [although] you can switch it back to the old Xbox 360 style controls if you'd like. Things like planet scanning have been improved, we've rolled in all the patches, done a ton of bug fixing." Houston also said that community feedback had been taken into account for numerous gameplay tweaks and adjustments.

Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 will include the original game and several downloadable content packs released for the game on a single Blu-ray disc. The extra content includes the Lair of the Shadow Broker, Project Overlord, Kasumi: Stolen Memory, and Blood Dragon Armor packs.

PS3 gamers who purchase Mass Effect 2 new will also gain access to the Cerberus Network, which offers free content ranging from the Zaeed character missions to the Hammerhead hovertank. Used-game purchasers who want said content will be required to purchase access to the Cerberus Network.

BioWare will also be offering a make-good to PS3 gamers for the absence of the original game on Sony's platform. The studio's Edmonton arm will be collaborating with Dark Horse Comics on an interactive comic that helps fill in the story leading up to the events in Mass Effect 2. Choices made while reading the comic will also have an effect on a player's character creation.

For an idea of what to expect from Mass Effect 2 on the PS3, check out GameSpot's coverage of the Xbox 360 edition.

@Qv9 Dude, how much better do you need ME3 to look? ME2 is already a freaking gorgeous game.

Sweet. Any game that gets delayed on one platform should get upgraded or bonus content when it's ported to the other.

@thanatosser: Gee, I wonder why you were censored? In case it's not coming across through my text, I'm being sarcastic. You are acting like an idiot and are making all of us 360 supporters look bad. Please stop trying to help since you don't know how to.

Down with exclusives. ITs good to see another exclusive gone. Exclusive game should only be made by the company that makes the console. If you dont make that console then ur game shouldn't be exclusive.

The sucky part is that theyre saying the new mass effect 3 will look as good, not better than mass effect 2. Now better graphics is 1 less thing to look 4ward to.

Reposted for the benefit of all you fanboys and the enemies of free opinion at Gamespot HQ! who recently silenced my opinion here and condoned racism in another thread when I verbally called out a biggot openly using the N word, they censored my anger towards him and they censored me here... "lol, bickering! But ps3 owners are the worst because they whine and seem to be more hateful of other platforms. You sure do bite quickly you poisonous whinging little scabs, you indeed are a blight upon your chosen platform. Its a great machine, lord knows why it attracts such subhuman antogonistic filth. I see your comments and your attitude and it makes me sick. you deserve this repremand so take it and then sit in the corner and be quiet! I think Xbox and PC owners have a right to feel sold short here, PS3 owners donā??t have the same appreciation or emotional investment that PC and Xbox users have built up having supported this supposedly exclusive series from the start. But also Bioware and EA are to blame for having a dodgy sense of logic and loyalty to their user base, giving this much to one and not the other is slighting the existing fan base and is essentially setting one set of users against the other, how could this move NOT generate resentment and on that basis it is unethical. The game should go to the ps3 in the same state as the other platforms got it and for the equivalent price or not at all... period."

Oh and because I was honest and nice about Sony in the last two posts let me clarify(because I am a 360 fanboy) Death to Sony, PS3 is awfull, Long live the King 360.... Fanboy duties fullfilled! LOL

Wow 360 graphics are at their peak huh? I'm curious where that has been reported officially. Oh wait... no where because it is in no way true. Both systems will continue to improve as code is refined and engines are built to take advantage of new updates, patches and software technologies. The 360 had such a huge jumpstart over PS3 because of its close relation to the Windows OS and DirectX. It was and remains easier to program for. But it seems developers are finally getting a grasp on Sony's architecture and that should increase game quality as well as game output. But Xbox has a pretty big lead in this Gen and MS can simply release a new system in the next couple years, again ahead of Sony, and continue the trend if they in fact "peak" at some point in the near future. To date however, I have not seen any report that the PS3 has superior graphic quality in games release on both systems. We will see if this changes.

@Iaplace985 LOL I love that post! Kinda like how MS and Apple are both owned by MS! I dont think Sony and MS would ever join forces though, lots of competing blood between the two LOL And to everyone else, congrats on getting to play ME2 PS3 folks. I'm not a fan of Sony's system, but this is one of the greatest games ever made and its not fair that you couldn't play it. Its just that good. I love my Xbox exclusives but this game is just too epic not to let everyone have access too it. Here's to ME3 winning game of the year next year!

@MEDzZ3RO Guess we'll find out soon enough what makes Crysis 2 tick!

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@Egotte The 800 HD "rehashes" don't look as bad as alot of people make them out to be, atleast I haven't found that. The 200 premium cars do look superb especially from first person; Forza 3s visuals are undeniably good but it doesn't seem to have the graphical brilliance GT5 does at times. Uncharted and Little Big Planet will always be standout because Uncharted has alot of colour ranges and LBP just has a unique look to it that's very appealing. God Of War 3s boss battles are standout for me because the visuals don't deteriorate even when zoomed right out when fighting up Kronos. Is it just me but I find Crysis 2 hasn't advanced much since the original Crysis graphically.

Egotte
Egotte

@MEDzZ3RO I've been doing a lot of comparisons between Gran Turismo 5 and Forza 3 lately, and the cars themselves often look much better in Forza 3, especially since 800 of the 1000 that PD used are higher resolution copies of old GT4 models. God of War 3's art style is what makes it appear to be stunning visually, though I found Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to be just as impressive in almost every way. This game simply uses a different visual style. Little Big Planet 2 and Uncharted 2 are strong competitors for best visual experience on the Playstation 3, but do we really know if the XBOX 360 is at peak? The bar will be set with Rage and Crysis 2.

MEDzZ3RO
MEDzZ3RO

@Egotte Developpers aren't making games for PC like they used to. The potential market is much larger on consoles now for most games other than mmo; it's just not worth it. I'd say 360 visuals are probably at peak but no doubt the PS3 hasn't got that much more to give.Develppers didn't seem to know how to develop for the PS3 properly until 2009 with Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 being exceptions. As it stands now I'd say God Of War 3 is best visually on PS3.Gran Turismo 5 isn't far off the mark either. Next year based on trailers and gameplay videos, Resistance 3 seems to be the best looking game bizarrely seeing as the past 2 titles haven't been graphical showcases.

Egotte
Egotte

@Dominicobaggio I'm not the one who originally said that consoles are holding back PC development. The developers themselves are taking issue with their respective companies catering too much to the console user, but it's console games that unfortunately are top dog today. Uncharted 3 and Killzone 3 appear to be visually on par with their predecessors, so it will be some time before we see if there still is much left to "squeeze" out of the PS3, as you put it. However, to say that the XBOX 360 visuals are at a peak, that just depends. A processor heavy game will thrive more on the Playstation 3, but seeing as how a lot of games are fueled additionally (and oft primarily) by the abilities and strengths of the GPU, this is where the XBOX 360 is strongest. Most multi-platform games to this day often perform better on the platform for which they are developed. Once Crysis 2 and Rage are released, however, you'll see how limited these two boxes are.

Dominicobaggio
Dominicobaggio

@Egotte visuals on 360 are at a peak, ps3 keeps advancing. Thats the beauty. Like i was saying when it was released, so many people struggled to program it because it was so complex. Exactly the same happened with ps2. Only in the last couple of years did they squeeze the quality out of that with god of war etc. This is happening again, just look at the new drake compared to the last, or the power in Killzone 3, or on topic this mass effect 2 (though the demo looked like junk to me) Its ignorant to say consoles are holding back pc, nothing stops manufactures from making pc games. They should and could make amazing ones, they just dare not invest because the returns are not there. Consoles are empowering the markets selling billions, the only problem is the big sellers are graphically beautiful and simple games. I tihnk you dont understand pcs most people dont have a good pc, about 5% of people have a super nerd machine powerful enough to render what you talk about, so its not worth investing in those games. But thats the nature of mass market, simplicity appeals to the masses. Nothing to do with console power holding the games back... For example it would be interesting to see what something like total war sold, compared to cod. Or how the new shogun will do. I for one want more cerebral pc games, but its not going to happen, as people are less cerebral now im afraid.

I think it a good thing this game is coming to the PS3 it a great game and think it will be enjoy by the PS3 gamers only the sad Hardcore PS3 Fanboys and 360 haters will not want to play it... you are in for some good time... but I hope Bioware have move all DLC to free on the 360 if it going to be free with the PS3 verison

@MisterD3000 There will be a 15 minute 'graphic novel' type introduction to the PS3 game that will fill in players on the storyline thus far, and will also allow decisions to be made that will affect the narrative also. Just so us PS3 players aren't in the dark on the characters and story! Really looking forward to this!

Egotte

@laughingassasin Point is, all the current gaming consoles are far outdated now. They're certainly holding back advancements in visual technology at this point, even as good as recent games have appeared to the naked eye. Coming from the PC community and the developers, they're not happy right now. We shouldn't just ditch a console after the first three years, sure, but the visuals on current consoles are at peak. It's too bad the PC-gaming community can't dictate how things roll anymore.

laughingassasin

@Egotte Yeah how is ps3 soon to be outdated, its more recent then xbox 360, it came out like a year later i think, and i dont see why we ps3 0wners dont deserve the game, it pisses me off that there are exclusives at all, for either system, its gay theyd make way more money any way if it was released on another system as well

@Ex-DarkBlade & torbonator I'm kinda messin' with you guys too. I own a gaming PC, the 360 and the PS3. I just don't like how Bioware is going to revamp the game a year later, just so we feel inclined to buy it again. Five years ago, I may have dropped the cash without a thought, but you see the frivolous side of it the older you get!

torbonator

@Egotte soon to be outdated....... blu-ray rom mate...... the 360 only has dvd rom, what's more outdated? (I have both consoles and play mass effect on pc so don't bother shouting fan boy at me)

@Egotte, I am just joking. Why are you jealous and serious? Xbox 360 owners got couple of franchise that are exclusive to Sony consoles like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid. Be happy for PS3 owners, it not like you guys lost Mass Effect to us.

kiopta1

Why do so many peeps complain about devs doing things to make money or DLC costing too much....This is a business...making money is the point...the fact that games are also an art IMO just adds to the passion of devs/fans and the quality of product. If you have a problem with the cost don't buy or get a job. Amazing I just solved a problem for gamers. I support Bioware's moves because I love the product they put out and how much the fans can influence the games. If Bioware was actually Sh!tin on their fans then I would sing a different toon.

The only cure to fanboyism is to buy both systems (or more cowbell)...like me and now I enjoy both worlds...tee hee! For those PS3 peeps that have yet to experience this triology...enjoy cause its one of the best ever.

the big key to the matter is, what about the original Mass Effect. I am to understand (being a PS3 mark, myself...no Xbox 360 here) Mass Effect had a HUGE impact on the gameplay of Mass Effect 2. If they're just skipping directly to ME2, that's kind of a piss off. I mean, It's like giving someone a sequal without giving them the original to enjoy the story base.

sephiroth136
sephiroth136

lol at the 360 fanboys/girls who are ticked off that ME2 is going on PS3, therefore losing another exclusive. I however don't mind one bit as, although i used to be a 360 fanboy i realised that most of the great games i had on 360 were also on PS3 and that apart from Reach, Forza 3, Mass Effect and (maybe) Fable 3 there weren't many good exclusives on 360 so i decided to get a PS3 and haven't regretted it.

part of me wants to be an xbox fanboy and rage about how unfair it is. the rest of is just happy more people get to play this game and suffer through the mining mechanic. muahahahaha!!! nevertheless i might buy this again some time in the future (on ps3) just to check out the comic. i'm playing it through again after killing off wrex and keeping the council in ME1 just to see the changes.

@durio whoa dude calm down I'm just saying that it seems like everytime this thing happens it benefits those who play on Playstation. The same thing happened with Resident Evil 4 back on gamecube luckily all the added goods came out in the Wii edition so I got to play it. I'd be cool with it if it happened the other way around once in a while.

Egotte

@thanatosser 100% agreed! We have yet to really see the finished product, let alone a demo. Next week we can start making our own decisions as to how much better this new version may actually be. I had considered buying the PS3 version, but considering that I have a CE of the X360 version and nearly all of the DLC, there's no point. Make it flashier for PS3, whatever, the story is intact across all platforms, so the game remains the same. It will never sit right with me to not access Mass Effect 1 on Playstation, considering it was a complete masterpiece. I'm glad Sony doesn't get access to this game, and the Dark Horse comic will NEVER EVER replace a full game. This is strictly a money-making scheme. They want to not only leech off people who only own the Playstation 3, but also those of us who already own it for another platform. It's nothing more, nothing less. P.S. Look around the Internet too. The XBOX/PC faithful are still more interested in Mass Effect 3 than any PS3 user will ever be, since most of the Sony fanboys have their heads way too far up Nathan Drake and Kratos' ass to notice this groundbreaking series.

@_Silent_Jay_ point is UE3 doesn't run as well as many newer engines today do. Would have been nice to see a new engine used for ME3. Not a deal breaking event by any means, just saying it would have been nice.

I think when a game is re-released with free DLC content on it, the price of the DLC on XBL or PSN should be slashed. Re-releasing ME2 for 360 would be stupid, and I don't think anyone was actually suggesting that. But cutting the price of the DLC isn't unreasonable, IMO.
