Nintendo 64 role-playing classic stacked onto Wii's downloadable-game reservoir alongside Balloon Fight and Silent Debuggers.
They don't call it the Mario Factory for nothing. This week's Virtual Console update would be utterly unremarkable were it not for Mario's paper-thin role-playing adventure on the Nintendo 64. Rolling with the mustachioed plumber onto the VC this week is Balloon Fight from the Nintendo Entertainment System and Silent Debuggers from the TurboGrafx-16.
As with Square's Chrono Trigger before it, Paper Mario found critical acclaim in 2001 despite being released on a console well past its heyday. In his search for the Star Spirits, Mario is joined by a wide range of characters to thwart Bowser's attempts to rule the Mushroom Kingdom through the power of the Star Rod. Paper Mario features a unique art style that blends 2D character models with 3D environments in a nonlinear role-playing game scenario. The game is just the sixth from the Nintendo 64 to be ported over to the Wii's Virtual Console, and will cost gamers 1,000 Wii points ($10).
Those wondering what that whole balloon thing is about in Mario Kart battle mode need look no further than the NES's Balloon Fight. With gameplay similar to the arcade classic Joust, players must pop enemies' balloons while protecting their own. As players advance through the stages, enemies become more difficult, and lightning and water hazards are added into the mix. Also featured in Balloon Fight is Balloon Trip, where players attempt to stay afloat in a side-scrolling level while dodging environmental hazards. Balloon Fight offers two-player action and is available for 500 Wii points ($5).
Last on this week's VC list is Silent Debuggers, released originally for the TG-16. Featuring a sci-fi twist on classic dungeon-crawl gameplay, players must navigate an alien-infested space station to deactivate an automatic detonator located in the ship's lowest level. The first-person shooter's action is spiked by a strict 100-minute time limit. Silent Debuggers slips onto the Wii for 600 Wii points ($6).
i want more n64 damit only 7? comon! wheres super samsh , perfect dark , donkey kong 64 , goldeneye??
It only seems like they are going to put N64 games that were made and published by Nintendo themselves on the VC for now
FINALY! PAPER MARIO! now when will they put super mario RPG on? that game was awesome! and wheres goldeneye 007!?!
I just got this one on the Wii yesterday and I am hooked on it. This game is a whole lot of fun and it worth the 10 bucks.
@Pencilpusher69 "A "while ago"? That came out like 5 weeks ago." It is a good thing you are a pencil pusher and not a numbers cruncher. Because ALttP didn't come out anywhere NEAR five weeks ago. It came out WAY back during the early Spring of this year or late Winter.
I never got to complete Paper Mario so this is awesome. Once i get my Wii online i've got to get this.
gohantech00 "Wow, finally, a second game that I downloaded off of Virtual Consule. It took long enough after downloading Link to the Past a while ago...." A "while ago"? That came out like 5 weeks ago.
This is the first time I've been into two out of three of the games on a given VC release day. Coulda been three-for-three if Mario RPG was in there...
Wow, finally, a second game that I downloaded off of Virtual Consule. It took long enough after downloading Link to the Past a while ago......
"They don't call it the Mario Factory for nothing" "They"? I think the only they is you GameSpot. Anyhoo, Paper Mario was great. I liked how they had all the trappings of a full RPG yet kept things appearing simplified.
"lamprey263 I noticed I'm going to have to be picky about what N64 VC games I download, because the Wii storage space is very limited. I think I'll save what little storage space is left for Tetrisphere." You can re-download your VC games as much as you like without addition cost. If you are short on space just delete what you aren't currently playing. If you get the urge to play them again, just head to the VC shop and re-download for free.
Great game. Still own it for the N64, so I don't need to purchase this. Though, I'm fairly tempted to go play through it again.
This was a no-brainer purchase. Easily up there as one of the greatest games ever and contender with OoT and GoldenEye for N64's top throne. Kinda interesting that one of Nintendo's best creations was the N64's final release. Much like Twilight Princess to the GameCube (ignoring the obligatory EA Sports titles, as Madden NFL '08 will also be coming out for the now long deceased Xbox).
Finally I'll be downloading my first N64 game. I only played the original Paper Mario on a rental but never played it thru. The other N64 games worthwhile on VC (Zelda & Mario 64) I already have on a GC disc and the DS respectively. What gives with the delay of the GS report on the VC. I know last week was E3 and they were occupied but this has been going on for sometime. They're getting way too lackadaisical.
Bout dang time. I've been waiting for Paper Mario since the Wii came out because I never got to own it when I had my Ninty 64. Now the joyous days will begin!
i looking forward to playing paper mario cuz i never played it before. balloon fight on the other hand can keep you busy for hours!! i can't wait!!
icytower38 > Mario 64, Starfox 64, Mario Kart, F-Zero X, Zelda OoT, and this. Internet was being dumb but I'm definitely buying both Paper Mario and Balloon Fight (it would be better with the wii-mote). Nice to see another good single player, and a nice RPG one.
soon to be one of the first "retro" games i play on my wii, but how about super metroid!? a must have nintendo classic, that they're probably holding on to as long as they can. anyone noticed they haven't re-released it a million times like they do they're other games, i mean how many different systems do i need to play super mario 3 on.
now maybe I can get kirby crystal shards or chrono trigger or the final fantasy series or the mana series (including secret of evermore) they are steady foolin around with this other crap
Finally, we're starting to get the good classic games. Now we just need Super Mario RPG and we're set. :D
Who the crap would waste five bucks on Balloon Fight? That game is mildly fun, but it's on Animal Crossing...and it's not worth any amount of money anyway. Just like Excitebike and Ice Climber.
"They don't call it the Mario factory for nothing" "They" don't call it the Mario factory at all. It's just an intensly annoying nickname made up by foolish game jounrlaists. They have even started calling Sega the Sonic Factory! Just stop it. And take your head out of your collective arse.
