Majesco grapples with Nacho Libre for DS

Publisher details first US wrestling game for Nintendo's portable; release set for October.

In the upcoming Jack Black film Nacho Libre, a Mexican priest, desperate to raise money to fund his orphanage, turns to the world of professional wrestling to make a buck.

It's an oft-repeated story at this point. Lucha Libre fans may know it as the true story of luchador/cleric Fray Tormenta. Jean Reno fans may remember his version of the role in The Man in the Golden Mask. Tekken fans may recognize it as the backstory of the tiger-masked King.

The story is returning to gaming now, and not just in the next installment of Tekken. Majesco Entertainment today revealed a few more details about its game based on Nacho Libre, and moved its release date up a month from November to October.

In Nacho Libre, players will be able to take control of more than 11 luchadors including Nacho himself, who will be voiced by Jack Black. Majesco is promising four play modes, four-player wireless brawls, a slate of minigames that will make use of the DS touch screen, arenas pulled straight from the film, and "a range of over-the-top wrestling attacks."

The game is being developed by Budcat Creations, which handled the PlayStation 2 port of Psychonauts. The team has also cited the Nintendo 64 wrestling games developed by AKI as providing inspiration for Nacho Libre's design.

game will su*k but the movie will own

SCARFACELP 5 pts

if they can somehow capture some of the humor of the film and couple that with a good wrestling engine then they coul have a hit on their hands. You never know , if the film turns out to have a Napolian Dynamite-like fan base, then the game could be successful and majesco would be raking in cash. who knows though.

this game is going to suck lol , I mean good games based on movies are very rare, but then again lets hope this one is good, which is again........ rare lol.

The theme of the movie is somewhat strange; so I really hope that they can translate the feeling of "Lucha Libre" to the game and make it an interesting one.

It great that Jack Black is a least doing the voice. It may be buy just because of Jack Black. Then all they need is Bruce Campbell voice and you never know it may be a hit.

Movie games are never good but I have hope for this game

Then Majesco has the nerve to wonder why they dont make any money.

Remember the Adam Sandler movie Little Nikki that made onto the GBA? This game is going to suck just as bad.

NeoJedi 7 pts

Movie should be good... but the game? And only on the DS?

WTF????????? How the heck are they are going to have a game out by October??? We did not hear or see any of this during E3. That is a real SAD sign. Damn movies trying to grab every dollar we have with stupid bi-products like this. X-Men THE OFFICIAL GAME was another FLOPPER.

"Movie based games are never really good, but you never know." GoldenEye 007 and the Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay say "hi".

The movie looks like it will be entertaining. Just have to wait and see about the game.

Sweet a Nacho Libre game.THe movie looks funny but I think it could do better on another system like PS2 or even the 360 but I think it will be good on the DS but as good as it could have been but hope it will be fun none the less. I am guessing it will come out around the time it come out on DVD.

I'll watch the movie, but I doubt I'll pick up the game. I guess that means I am not really dedicated to saving Majesco.

The October release actually makes me feel a little better about the title, as it seems they aren't just rushing out the game for the movie release.

Movie based games are never really good, but you never know.
