Lord of the Rings Online gets Riders of Rohan expansion this fall

Turbine's latest expansion to free-to-play MMORPG brings new locations, increased level cap, and mounted combat.

In September, Turbine released the Rise of Isengard expansion for its free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game Lord of the Rings Online. That pack added new zones like Dunland, the Gap of Rohan, and Isengard, and it became the best-selling add-on ever for the game. Today, Turbine announced that gamers will be able to continue their journeys through Middle-earth with a new expansion.

The Riders of Rohan add-on--which Turbine says is twice the size of Rise of Isengard--brings new zones, mounted combat, and a level cap increase to 85. It is scheduled to arrive this fall, and Turbine did not affix a price to it.

In the expansion, gamers will join the Rohirrim galloping across the Plains of Rohan; experience the breaking of the Fellowship at Amon Hen; meet the Ents of Fangorn forest; and join up with Eomer, aiding him on his quest to protect King Theoden's people.

As for the expansion's new mounted combat ability, the add-on gives players the ability to mount their steeds and battle from atop the creatures. Using this new ability, players will encounter fresh foes in warg riders, who beset the Plains of Rohan. Additionally, gamers can customize their horse's army and level its skills.

Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar was released in 2007 to a warm critical reception. The game welcomed expansions Mines of Moria in 2008 and Siege of Mirkwood in 2009, before it adopted a free-to-play business model in 2010. The title's Rise of Isengard expansion followed in 2011. Lord of the Rings Online is set in Middle-earth, a fictional fantasy universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

A bit miffed they didn't get around to mounted combat this last expansion, and I'll be even more miffed if there are no more updates between now and this fall. Still, totally excited. I just hope I'll still have time to play by then.

This is the expansion I have been waiting for since Mines of Moria. Moria was an amazing achievement as I think they captured it 100% and the relief you feel when you get to exit and head over to Lothlorien. Mounted combat should be interesting to say the least and I imagine Helms Deep should be epic!

"Additionally, gamers can customize their horse's army and level its skills."

Didn't he mean "armour" instead of "army"?

My buddy absolutely loves this game, time to let him know about the expansion coming this fall, if he doesn't already know.

    Who cares? It's a F2P garbage game.

    Pass.

i quit a few months ago when Turbine released a half finished product in Rise of Isengard. They then followed it up by admitting they were releasing a half finished Instance Finder tool that put you in random encounters which contained different rewards based on the encounter you did. I won't be buying this because it will be half finished as well using their track record as evidence. Also: Guild Wars 2. Nuff said.

I have not played for several months but It is one of the better F2P games. If you like fantasy settings your not going to get much better. I imagine the movies certainly didn't hurt the popularity for most. I imagine I'll will grab this expansion too. Sounds like we are still gonna be waiting for GW2 for awhile still.

After the movies essentially ruined Lord of The Rings for me, I haven't paid attention to the franchise. I am surprised it is still so popular... I guess there are people out there excited that 'Lord of the Rings Online gets Riders of Rohan expansion this fall'.
