Warner Bros. announces Champions of Norrath developer Snowblind is working on War in the North, due out in 2011 for PC, PS3, Xbox 360.
One week after it announced the family-friendly Aragorn's Quest would support the PlayStation Move, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced an all-new Lord of Rings game. Developed by Snowblind Studios (Champions of Norrath), Lord of the Rings: War in the North is an "action-adventure RPG" that will ship for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 sometime next year.
The game will be based on both author J.R.R. Tolkien's original Lord of the Rings novels and director Peter Jackson's 2001-2003 film trilogy. The publisher acquired the rights to make games based on both the films and novels in 2008, when it reclaimed the former from Electronic Arts. The move came just prior to the release of the tepidly reviewed Lord of the Rings: Conquest from the now-all-but-closed Pandemic Studios (The Saboteur). Middle-earth Enterprises, the private company in charge of licensing all Tolkien-related properties, will also be involved.
War in the North will feature "unseen lands, story elements, and characters from Middle-earth, as well as elements familiar from past feature films," according to WBIE. It will offer upgradeable weapons and special abilities that develop along with the game's characters, which can be customized by players. Snowblind Studios founder Ryan Geithman promised the game will also feature "an innovative approach to online co-op gameplay, woven throughout every facet of the game," indicating full-campaign cooperative play is in the works.

Lord of the Rings = awesome ARPG = also very awesome Co-op = I'm not sure what "an innovative approach" to co-op would be, but untill further notice, co-op is awesome. Co-op Lord of the Rings ARPG = There is virtually no possible way it can fail.
Always been waiting for something like this, since battle for middle-earth. A middle-earth strategy game, now a middle-earth based rpg
i hope this is open world and has amazing graphics and character customization and a good battle system and crafting and classes and skills and talents and towns and tons of items ( i cant believe the white council was canceled) *cries*
@008Zulu what do mean there is an obsession of making co-op games?? Plz tell me the games that have co-op cos there is hardly any co-op games and its bull crap, we need wayyyyy more Splitscreen co-op games
@muzza93 sorry I didn't like it at all, I love the last one but the 4th ruined it for me. I did not like it in any way at all. That is just my opinion. And you don't go around calling people or me and idiot just because they don't like a game that you like. Be a little more mature about the subject. Name calling isn't needed. I'm done with this topic, flame all you want.
What is the obsession with making games co-op only? War in the North, sounds like it'll be based off the Silmarilion rather than LotR.
@zaku101 - LOTR died in 2009? What are you talking about? The books were written in the 50's, and got book of the century awards in several polls world wide. LOTR will be a classic, and be around for a very, very long time.
Although I would love to believe that there's going to be an awesome LOTR game, this idea doesnt sound very new, interesting, or innovative at all...
This sounds too good to be true, far too good. It seems like they announce a LOTR game every few couple of years that sounds awesome, then it seems to get lost in the fray of licensing and rights battles. Hopefully this one actually gets done. Full campaign co op would be amazing, especially in a LOTR setting. Just do not rush it and make a good game. Conquest would have been a lot more fun if they spent some more time polishing everything.
@doontime GTA4 is far from a horrible game, if you were smart enough to see the amount of detail there is in GTA4 it would blow your mind. The way your phone interferes with the car radio when theres an incoming call, the way a cocked shotgun goess of if it hit the ground, the amazing flame effects on cars after u throw a molotov cocktail onto a car where the rubber on the tires catch alight and where patches of petrol ontop the car from the molotov are alight too, or the incredible helicopter controls, no other game has a more well designed helicopter control system, and the car handling is also incredible. the way luxury cars have voice GPS and regular cars dont, the way smokes pours out the car windows when u give little jacob a ride, the way people realistically roll over your car when you slam into them, i could go on for hours on the ridiculous amount of detail GTA4 has and no ther game has even 1 tenth of detail GTA4 has. GTA4 is the best game ever made & if you think otherwise your just an idiot. BTW LOTR game sounds decent
gr8 .. after playing Dragon Age .. I really wanted LOTR gameplay like dragon age now my dreams coming true .. :D
Hoping the best for the devs. Its so hard to get a good game out with a Movie licence. Hope this one turns out good.
Now that EA isn't trying to play off of the hype of the movies we might actually get the kind of LOTR game we deserve!
Lol @DELTSTEEZE I know I am a nerd and I am proud of it, I said it was nerdy to do what he did as well, if you play games you are a nerd in some way! On the inside we are all NERDS!!! :)
@zodiackilla and @doontime We're all commenting on a Lord of the Rings game on a videogame website. You might want to be careful about throwing around the N word....(nerd)
Lol @zodiackilla if you go on a game site to tell people to join your clan that is nerdy as well, @taylormadederek people play what they want this is what they like, E.T. is dumb and this game will be better then my last crap purchase (GTA4) what a horrible game
You people make me sick.......9 thumbs down.......you are actually going to buy this next to worthless drivel.........and only because it has the LOTR name next to it...............weak............I would rather play E.T.
Snowblind Studios turned out some great RPG hack and slash games with the Balder's Gate: Dark Alliance series. I'm sure Ryan Geithman will handle the license appropriately.
They are really pushing the co-op point, but for me the story will need to be great and cohesive with the main plot of the books, input from Christopher Tolkien would be amazing but some how I doubt there will be. Also the race's would need to be divided as well e.g Gondorians, Rohirrim, the Dunedain Rangers for the race of men. So you can really flesh out your character.
Finally a great looking LOTR RPG for consoles. I mean the third age was alright but it wasnt a great rpg. The only thing getting me through that game was the LOTR part.
Oh thank you! I've been waiting for a LOTR RPG for consoles. LOTR Conquest was a joke and embarrassment. Total insult to LOTR fans. This is their way of making up for it I hope.
LoTR games have been historically mediocre. The first Battle for Middle Earth was very good, but besides that there hasn't been any great games from the franchise.
This is great, LOTR lives again on platforms! Champions of Norrath and its sequel Champions: Return to Arms were freaking awesome! Hands down, one of my favorite series on the PS2. Im still always looking for Champions of Norrath 3, but a LOTR spin on things would be interesting to see how its done. Is there going to be more than just Co-Op? Because Champions of Norrath had up to Four players. Snowblind is gonna do this right, I know for sure. Ive been wanting a new good hack n' slash RPG....
This is going to be a true lotr game, can't wait! This is what I've always wanted out of an lotr game! :D
This is good. I loved Champions and the Baldur's gate games so I have some faith that the Dev's will make a fun LoTR game.
