Lego Lord of the Rings features 85 playable characters

Traveller's Tales' adaptation of Tolkien's fantasy tome to include a number of characters not seen in Peter Jackson's movies.

J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings fantasy series is known for its numerous characters, and developer Traveller's Tales is keeping true to that spirit with its new game based on the franchise, Lego: Lord of the Rings. According to a report at The Verge, Lego Lord of the Rings will feature 85 playable characters, including some who have never appeared in Peter Jackson's film adaptations. These characters were not named.

Due out October 30, Lego Lord of the Rings will be based on Jackson's Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy and will follow the storylines of each film, using dialogue from the movies. Unlike the Lego Harry Potter franchise, which was split over two games, the entire Lord of the Rings saga will be told in one entry.

The game follows Frodo Baggins and the unlikely fellowship that sets out from Rivendell on a dangerous journey to destroy The One Ring and bring peace to Middle-earth. Throughout Lego Lord of the Rings, players will enter the Mines of Moria, climb the Misty Mountains, and battle orcs, uruk-hai, and the nasty balrog.

In keeping with the staples of the Lego franchise, Lego Lord of the Rings will be peppered with lighthearted interpretations of the source material, with gamers tasked with solving puzzles along the way. Character players featured in the game include Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Sam, Merry, and Pippin.

I wish the Lego games weren't so damn fun! Over twenty years old and a HUGE fan of the Star Wars Lego games.

This looks so great!

I won't be satisfied until I am eating 3 square Lego meals a day and driving a Lego car out of my Lego garage. I'm going to vote for Lego when it runs for President, as it is guaranteed to do a better job than the current <reference to male incumbent>.

I hope it's good and the voice acting isn't too prominent.

@bmart970 Oh, and, **SPOILER!** instead of Gandalf giving Pippin his hat and so on, he just shoves Pip into the well in Moria.

@bmart970 From what I have seen it is basically a game with quotes direct from the films at given cues, though the action (THANKFULLY!!!) isn't an exact revisiting of the film sequences. Looks pretty well done and it is hilarious to see the action and still hear the original voices.

I can't wait to play as Gantard: Gandalf's other, less mentally fit cousin.

Does anyone know if this will be open world on 3ds like the console versions or are they going to strip it down like they did with Lego Batman 2 on 3ds and Vita?

@The_Dragon_Born I don't think the 3ds can handle this in open world.

The_Dragon_Born

@deskp Vita got gimped on Lego Batman 2 and 3ds has the power of a gamecube...the question is whether the developer will take the low road or high.

@The_Dragon_Born  they got a seperate team working on the handheld versions. so its proapbly not as easy as porting the game to 3ds.  its a shame the vita game is following the 3ds tho.... Not that I really care. Console or pc is the way to play these games In my opinion.  I enjoy good graphics!

I remember when Lego LOTR was just a joke I would casually throw around in forums. Now, it's we got 85 characters to look forward too. :P

LEGO Marvel or LEGO Shrek after :D

@ToxicOriginal I'm guessing lego batman 3 for spring 2013, and the hobbit for summer 2014.     if they keep doing 2 a year, theres a slot empty for fall 2013.

I can't see a lego shrek game happening.

@ToxicOriginal No Lego Shrek! I'm a huge Shrek fan, but I really don't think I could play that. No good reason... just think it's a bad idea!

Lego Marvel could be interesting. If done properly.

Sigh, another one for my pile of 'to be played' games...along with Lego Batman 2 (still haven't started that one), Darksiders 2, Sleeping Dogs, AC3, Forza Horizon, Okami HD...

Too many games, too little time!

@JangoF-76 I know that feeling all too well although this game won't affect me - it's the wife and kids that play the Lego games :)

Does this mean a LEGO version of Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords? :D

Sorry, but LOTR + Flight of the Conchords fans would get that (bad) joke. :P

This might just be the best LOTR game this gen. Not saying much considering how much of a bomb Conquest was, but still... this game looks good.

After having my son, I realized out of 53 xbox games, the "lego" series is the ONLY game i have that i feel okay playing in front of him(he's now 3). It's funny how i never realized how most of my games are questionable/violent before i had a kid. :)

=-=-=

And like anyone else on here says, on paper these games look horrible, but in fact are fun and simple games that are great to play with people of all abilities. I just wish people didn't hate "casual" games so much, they can be a lot of fun.. but it seems the "h@rdcor35" don't care for fun, only challenge.

I would only assume that LEGO The Hobbit being it's separate game, now that there are 3 movies.

I am always up for another Lego game. Somehow they are playable. Even that doesn't seem that it would be.

You know as much as I want to hate the Lego games I end up playing them with a friend and I love them. They are the kind of games that on paper suck but when you play they are awesome

@MrWhalo Who would provide the voice-work? (not saying I don't like the idea, because I totally do. I'm just curious)

MrWhalo
MrWhalo

@eddienoteddy That's a good question. Do you have any ideas? I just hope they would find someone that could eloquently portray a spry, rhythmic voice, obviously. I guess TT probably wouldn't take the time to do that though. Haha.

eddienoteddy

@MrWhalo Nope. No idea! I am supposed to meet with a Lego representative about the game next month. I'll definitely ask!
