Riot Games announces new user tally for free-to-play action RTS; 1.4 million play every day, 10 games start every second.
Riot Games has created only one game since it was formed, but that title has proven popular for the Santa Monica, California, studio. Today, the developer said its free-to-play action real-time strategy game League of Legends has some 15 million registered users.
Riot Games broke down the user statistics further, saying 1.4 million gamers play League of Legends every day. Additionally, the developer claims that during peak hours, the game is played by 500,000 users simultaneously across servers in the United States and Europe. Lastly, an average of 10 games of League of Legends start every second of every day.
Established in 2006, Riot Games--which is composed of talent from Blizzard Entertainment and the mod community that made DOTA--shipped League of Legends in 2009. The game was recently a victim of a LulzSec hack attack that targeted a number of companies. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review of League of Legends.
When it comes to DOTA renditions, its all about personal preference and if you like League then thas fine, but it seriously is one of the worst DOTA clones. 2D terrain, line of sight are through bushes (cmon, really?), no DENIES (very crucial), dumb-ed down itemization system, I could go on. Its laughable that LoL is up to 15 million registered users, but hey it is free so theres good reason to enjoy this mediocrity.
I was a hardcore DOTA player and tried LoL but never liked it as much. Though it's a good game they copied even the negative aspects of DOTA such as cartoony graphics. Waiting for the new DOTA from Valve which I think is gonna rock.
well i mean it's a free game - of course it has loads of players haha, i mean facebook tetris probably has a 100 million players, it's just that that's tetris and not a game with a lot of work put into it :) Don't get me wrong, but when somethings free i'm not really impressed by the numbers of people owning it. 15 million registered, but at lot of them are just people who wanted to try it out and failed to like it I neither play HoN, LoL or DoTa (i play WoW haha no better) so i'm not judging, just expressing opinion
Despite the numerous problems this game has it's still a great game and it's good to know it's doing so well.
Yeah, they should revisit the game after all those great updates. Best pvp action RTS i have played!
@DullBozer, All games in this genre has the same complains about the community. To be fair LoL is extremely team oriented. So a new player messing up a 45 min game is annoying. LoL gives a co-op vs AI, practice and then custom games for new players to learn the ropes. In these formats, there is hardly any flaming going on. The champion balancing issue again is a common problem. But LoL does a fairly good job of tweaking continuously to balance gameplay. IMO lot of new players to the genre make a massive fuss about unbalanced champions but its usually because they don't know how to counter different abilities effectively.
Great news. I really enjoy LoL - wish there was more maps though - getting a little sick of Summoner's Rift!
@DullBozer You must not play Call of Duty then, because the community there is made up of people spewing hate and vulgar comments constantly. The same goes for lots of video games.
Played a while, but believe me, it has the worst community ever. I was lucky enough to be good at the game, but don't you dare not play flawlessly or the rest of your team, mostly 10-15 years old nerd who go through a lot of frustrations every day, you know being nerds, will hate on you for the rest of the match. Also the lack of maps, there being only one that's fun and the other really boring, makes the game very redundant. Last thing, i understand how hard it must be to balance 50+ different champions, there being new ones coming out every two weeks, but its never fun to look up every new patch notes to see if your favorite character was nerfed into nothingness every week. But in the end its the terrible community that drove me away.
@nurnberg Have you played the game? You can unlock all of the champions by playing the game. They give the OPTION to pay for them or skins, but none of it is forced. The point is to play and progress and earn more and more. Just like when you play World of Warcraft they don't just start you off with every item and a maxed character and say have at the game. You progress and earn more content. That is how most games work.
I love League of Legends. Finally Gamespot recognizes this game exists. Maybe now they can rescore it. I don't imagine a 6.0 would have 1.4 million players daily.
@Majkic666 lol yup i have 3 accounts 2 lv 30 one lv 26 the reason i introduce friends and i usually help them level up meaning i start from scratch too, but i do have a competitive account
@ AmorDeRey1988 The pvp aspect of the game is competitive but playing against bots with friends is pure fun. I recommend it, even if it's not your kind of game. My brother is a hardcore fighting game enthusiast and recently he has gotten into LoL. He loves it.
Heh, my kid brother plays this.Looks like fun,but not my kind of game.Too competitive in my opinion.
out of those 15mio there are like every 3th or 2nd user that got 2-6 accounts trust me i know alot of people that has, dont realy understand why
@nurnberg This is misinformation. Every character in the game can be obtained completely free of charge. Skins and costumes are the only thing that costs money, but they are completely irrelevant features, and do not give an advantage. League of legends is a very fun and very addicting game, and despite its rage worthy community at times, it is still the one game I mostly play whenever I have free time.
@nurnberg i have everything unlocked and have every skin per champ + have every legendary skin unlocked and yet i payed like 40 $.
The thing that annoy me about this game is how you have to pay like 300$ to get all characters and skins. This is a huge rip-off and it's unfair because paying tons of money is the only way to unlock everything.
What's I'd really like to see is something where you control a hero unit WHILE building and commanding units, like Brutal Legend or Battlezone. A full scale RTS combined with an action game. It would be chaotic and awesome. One player would focus on leading units down one lane while other players focus on the slashy slash.
Glad to hear, hopefully they will bolster the servers and add new maps to it. But it's still an awesome F2P game
This is great news. I'm waiting for some actual innovation before I get into the dota/moba genre. To be honest, AOS has been my favorite so far because it focused on fighting the overpowering horde, rather then eachother... Not to say LoL isn't great: but at this point its obvious they're the most successful DotA clone and everyone else needs to stop ripping them off. Because seriously all the other MOBAs that have come out are identical...
