Lara gets date with Nintendo

Latest Tomb Raider game makes Legendary series debut on GameCube, DS this fall; Game Boy Advance version also shipping out later this year.

Not to point out the obvious, but a game heroine with Lara Croft's experience and notoriety can have just about any platform she wants. The buxom beauty recently made the rounds with several consoles in Tomb Raider: Legend, which has been released on the PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360.

However, one family of platforms that Ms. Croft has often given the cold shoulder to is Nintendo's, only coupling with the Game Boy handhelds a few times. Legend, a game designed as the series' rebirth, is changing all that and will be released on the DS and Game Boy Advance, as well as the previously announced version for the GameCube.

Today, Eidos Interactive announced that Tomb Raider: Legend for the Nintendo platforms will be released this fall. No gameplay details on the handheld versions were revealed, but a statement from the company says the DS and GBA versions will "capture the detail and breadth" of the console versions.

However, owners planning to pick up Tomb Raider: Legend for a Nintendo platform may get more than just a simple port. Eidos brand manger Kathryn Clements says, "There are a host of new and exciting features for Lara on the Nintendo platforms," but did not go into detail.

I'm surprised Tomb Raider is still going. I personally like TR, but mainly only because my memories of the first and second were so good. I can't seem to pick up any recent ones lately... I haven't even been able to pick up TR Legend (Xbox) from the Video store.

to the people who say: - i don't think it will sell well, Lego star wars came to the cube after almost a year behind the xbox and the ps2 versions, it sold more. the gamecube ROCKS.

Disgaeamad 5 pts

Nice. This game is looking very impressive, and I have more platforms to choose from.

Fantastic. At last Nintendo fans can enjoy Tomb Raider. :)

If they canned the GBA version, it wouldn't mean the DS version would benefit one iota. Handheld versions of these big console releases, more times than not, end up sucking.

Getting the XBox version this week... I hope it's as good as they say.

Namco is still in business. Ms Pac-man had the same graphics as Pacman. Bother to make frigging sense.

meimnobody 5 pts

People edios is rumored to be remaking the first Tomb Raider for the DS with improved graphics and additional features. Same with Soul Blade.

kriptonzz 5 pts

I think that rocks because I own a DS and will buy it. But then again graphics are everything... I mean just look how awful Ms. Pac-man was, no one played it and Namco went out of business. Too bad Pac-man couldn't have had better graphics...

troakun 5 pts

Hmm... improvments for Gamecube version, well this is a reversal. I might buy it if it's worth my time and money.

Maquis_UK 5 pts

i'm a-waitin for a GameCube version too. knew it was coming, obviously. still w00t !! -- extra content alone deserves double w00T !!

I wonder what they'll do with the GC version

no one is gonna buy the GC version......it's dead people

N-DAWG88 5 pts

Won't be so great on ds, i think, and too late in gcs life to do well

komdosina wrote: They should can the GBA version in order to do the best they can for the DS version of Tomb Raider. _____________________________________________________________ They should, but they won't. There are so many more GBA's in the hands of consumers than DS's, that they will continue on with both. Just look at the 360. The majority of it's games come out on regular Xbox too (for now).

ZeldaNut113 5 pts

lol, if they do add Wii-like features to the game, I wonder just what exactly Lara will do with that remote... ;-)

rbarahona 5 pts

This will be the first Tomb Raider I will be getting. I've read some reviews and the game seems very good. Let's see what Eidos will change for the GCN and the DS version of the game. It's always good to read that developers are supporting a Nintendo console. Although I really wonder why they have decided to support the GCN so late in it's lifecycle... Maybe all the gamers that will be buying The Legend of Zelda: TP will have one more excuse to get new software.

decebal 23 pts

Nice! The GBA version of Tomb Raider was the best one after Tomb Raider 1 and 2.

OmegaOrtega 5 pts

Don't put it on Gamecube, make it for the Revolution. Aka the Wii...such a sissy name. I don't see why they won't make it for the Rev after making a PC, Xbox and 360 ver. All 3 of those system are considered powerful even until this day, and the Rev is inbetween the power of Xbox and a 360, so yeah.

komdosina 5 pts

They should can the GBA version in order to do the best they can for the DS version of Tomb Raider.

i'll probably wait til it goes down to $20....i've always wanted to try tomb raider...

I finally get to play a Tomb Raider game for the first time in my life! _____________________________________________________________ You should probably wait for the GC one, but then again, by that time the PS2 version will probably be a GH for $20, or $15 if you prefer used. Anyways, chances are the GC version will be better. If anything, then for the clearer visuals, but also they may add a few things here and there. Devs usually do that when a game is re-released to another system some months later. I think I will wait for the GC versions review, and if there isn't enough extras added in, then I will just pick up the PS2 version. Slightly clearer visuals won't be enough to make me pay $30 more.

boblighte wrote: Who wants to bet the DS version is gonna be a crappy port that doesn't take advantage of any of the system's unique features? ____________________________________________________________ Well, for the first part of your question, I bet it is indeed going to be a crappy port. The article sounds like it will be the same version, and ports to handhelds usually don't end up very good. Also, I remember playing the first Tomb Raider on the original Playstation with the original controller, the one without analog sticks, and then playing it with analog. After using analog control for a game like that, I don't think I could ever go back to using the d-pad. Not to mention I've already had a bad experience with a certain game ported to the DS having horrible controls already. That very reason completely ruined my Mario 64 DS experience. To the second part, I kind of hope they don't try adding a bunch of touch screen support to it anyways, other that the poor touch screen analog simulation, or for shooting. It annoys me when these games use these features just because they are there. They should put the touch screen features to use where they fit, and where they are fun. Thinking of Tomb Raider, I can't think of any other good ways to use the touch screen that would add to the experience.

Who cares? How about some better games?

Mechakucha 5 pts

oh wow, games are still coming out for GC? Good for it.

freshmetal80 5 pts

All that extra time for a port is so that they can put Mario in as a secret playable character.

Ryo_Kensen 5 pts

2 bucks says the DS version will suck.

psycomantis_32 5 pts

Atleast the Gamecube gettin some lovin, besides Zelda, this holiday season

chibi-acer 13 pts

I guess it's nice that Lara is getting around, so long as it doesn't do so at the expense of content. Legend isn't terribly long, but since these ports are coming after the other releases, I'll assume no correlation there. Still, it'd be nice to see the developers use the same engine to produce another game with more content.

courtez2k4 5 pts

That's weird it's out just in time for the Nintendo Wii's launch. I think EIDOS are trying to pull a Twilight Princess if you know what I mean.

DarkSan00 5 pts

I BET YOU! boblighte, it's true, it will be like chaos theory on the ds (EWWWWWW!) port of an Ngage game (MORE EWWWW!) but the gamecube one, will be good : D

Platyphyllum 5 pts

cool! I will w8 for the GC one because I have a PS2 and GC and I need to see the reviews and check if one is better than the other. I finally get to play a Tomb Raider game for the first time in my life!

Man, just come out a tomb raider for the REV, not using the other name!

automaticsnake 5 pts

cool now kids can play with lara croft

Imavnas 5 pts

This fall? o_0 , thats a long time for a simple port of a game, even with a few extras. Why do I get the feeling the Gamecube version will have Wii features ala Twilight Princess?

boblighte 5 pts

Who wants to bet the DS version is gonna be a crappy port that doesn't take advantage of any of the system's unique features?
