Konami prepping 'new Metal Gear' for PlayStation platform

7-11's Japanese online storefront says upcoming Famitsu PSP + PS3 cover story will be new installment in Kojima's heralded franchise.

Konami has been mercilessly teasing gamers with its upcoming Kojima Productions-related announcement. Following a two-page teaser ad taken out in last week's Famitsu, the publisher launched a teaser site proclaiming that a big reveal was in store for May 18. When that date rolled around on Monday, however, gamers were greeted with a new countdown timer--which is set to expire at 6 p.m. PDT today--as well as a cryptic block character that could just as easily be an "S" as a "5."

Now, despite Konami's efforts to keep gamers on edge, it appears as if the publisher's grand scheme has been trumped by an advertisement for the July issue of Famitsu PSP + PS3. According to the online database of 7&Y, better known as the Japanese wing of convenience-store chain 7-11, the cover story for the PlayStation-focused magazine will be a "new Metal Gear." The magazine is expected to go on sale May 30.

Konami had not responded to requests for comment on whether the Metal Gear title in question relates to its current teaser campaign. The listing also does not indicate whether the new title will be for Sony's flagship console or the PSP, which has seen such system-exclusive titles as Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

Given the Sony-specific nature of the magazine, the listing also calls into question recent rumors that indicate that Konami's impending announcement pertains to an Xbox 360 edition of the publisher's top-rated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The game--titled Metal Gear Solid 4 + Oxide--was said to be Microsoft's show-stopper during its Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference, which takes place on June 1.

    MGS Rising confirmed to be PS3/360/PC game, and MGS Peace Maker to be PSP game. BTW I don't see why a PS magazine would mention anything about 360 releases.

    @Death Linked

    I have all 3 consoles and a solid PC. You don't. Too bad for you. And if the PS3 "will always win" why has the 360 outsold it by around 3 million units since it was released at the end of 2006?

    @hornetine

    As I have said before, you only lose by not having all options open to you. Too bad for you .

    Why Konami? Why Kojima? Why can't you make anything fresh instead of just regurgitating your Metal Gear brand and milking the living hell out of it? Why do you have to make a Substance or a Subsistance or a Substinance after every title you release now? Why couldn't you just include all that junk in the original package? Because you know your brand is big, and your fanboys will buy anything you put out with your name attached to it. I saw the scheme begin with the very first Metal Gear and the release of the VR Missions, which was complete garbage with the Metal Gear name attached to it.

    Granted, MG is a good series, but how much longer are people going to want to watch most of their games instead of actually play them? How much longer will you all call these nonsensical plots genius and praise Kojima for his "masterful" craft? Will you always believe his lies that "This is the last Metal Gear game...no seriously!!" because that's what they will always be as long as people flock to his new game like mindless drones. Is he a genius because he included some of the first breakable watermelons in a videogame? I think not. Is he genius because he has his special agent hide in a cardboard box? Which I'm pretty sure no special agent has ever seriously done...

    Why not give us something new? Why do you, of all people, have to go down that same route of just sticking to one franchise and getting as much money out of it as possible? Don't you want to venture out and maybe establish a new IP or something? Metal Gear can't be all that you think about...or maybe it's just the immense revenue that it never fails to draw. Apologies to everyone who actually cares about Metal Gear anymore. I've been a fan since the original but with each new iteration I can't help but feel like I've been there before. I just can't take it anymore....I'm done with Metal Gear...

    Go forth, flaming fanboys, and smite me with your thumbs pointing downward!

    wooow, that would be so freakin sick! You playing Big Boss, trying to catch Snake? But there were guards all over the place, you wouldn't need to do anything. Hmm... I can't wait to see what it actually is

    The screenshot shows Big Boss about the same age as he was in MGS3. Maybe this is where he gets sick of the lies from the government and the Patriots and goes AWOL to set up Zanzibarland? We may see a new/remake story which will show Big Boss getting beaten by a young Snake again??

    MetalGearUGA347 ive did notice that grayfox and raiden move alike but null used a machete? he did move pretty fast back then.. now that i think about it, this maybe more about Raiden because of this ad or BIG BOSS http://i40.tinypic.com/zwj43b.jpg

    i just had the same "two storys" idea, maybe something along the lines of Raiden getting sunny and Big Boss setting up foxhound OR possibley something nearer the les enfant terribles event, the theme being children? like you im just throwing out ideas

    chazzwozzer500
    i dont remember, i read the article a few days ago and am to tired/lazy to go look it up again

    Posted May 26, 2009 7:07 pm GMT

    VinKaiser I'm reposting the link so others can see this because the picture of big boss is identical to that which is on the site its obviously genuine, perhaps the Raiden picture will appear at the next countdown? But I still wonder does this have ANYTHING to do with Kojima at Microsoft's e3? presuming the letters are 3 R E S P e, theres PS3 and e3 no 6 or 0 to make 360

    http://i40.tinypic.com/zwj43b.jpg

    When exactly GMT does the next timer expire?

  • Engageothon

    I think Hideo Kojima is more of a private person, he doesnt want to tell people right away what games this is? he would rather make us think about it first, then surprise us out of nowhere....

    chazzwozzer, it could be just a early version of a cyborg suit that null was picked to try out or something like that. just throwing things out there.

    engathon, null/frank jeager/and grey fox are all the same person. i was just sayin grey fox and raiden are similar in alot of ways because of their bodies being replaced with cyborg suits, they both have rough messed up childhoods, both have blond hair and use blades. another theory i just thought up was what if the game takes place in two different time periods. maybe it jumps back in forth from the 60s and maybe when raiden goes to get sunny and somehow the two stories relate. who knows im just pumped to find out more.

    to "nZime"
    theres a P also? ok R could stand for Raiden? E3 could stand for the website. the "P" no clue AND rumors are going around saying this next MGS is going to be called MGS4 Substance or Subsistence, who knows whats gonna happen

    i thought the magazine said that the new game would be for either the psp or the ps3 but maybe your right i dont know

  • VinKaiser

    Posted May 26, 2009 6:55 pm GMT

    but didnt that magazine say that metal gear was coming to ps3 and psp, or something along those lines..i have forgotten
    so maybe there two seperate games?
    the cyborg armour does seem rather to futuristic to fit in with a middle aged big boss timeline

  • Engageothon

    Posted May 26, 2009 6:54 pm GMT

    i never new that? Raiden/null/frank jeager/grey fox are alot alike?

  • chazzwozzer500

    Posted May 26, 2009 6:52 pm GMT

    MetalGearUGA347
    but in the pic null or raiden was already a cyborg and big boss was dead by the time grey fox became a cyborg so that wouldnt really work

    @Engageothon

    i hope your right
    not only because it would clear up the confusion
    but it would be awesome to have big boss and frank jaeger in the same game

  • MetalGearUGA347

    Posted May 26, 2009 6:47 pm GMT

    in ur pic vinkalser that might b null and not raiden. because raiden n null/frank jeager/grey fox are alot alike just like snake n big biss

    Snake Eater was the first then Portable Ops then comes in METAL GEAR for Nes i think? but if it was an HD version of Metal Gear that would be some what great? who knows?

    im rather tired from a hard days work so im not 100% on the timeline but
    my guess is its either a prequel to metal gear or the sequel to snake eater (if they arent the same thing)

  • MetalGearUGA347

    Posted May 26, 2009 6:35 pm GMT

    what are all the letters? i saw R and the rest from earlier E3e5 i think i saw a P as well. But i think itd be a great idea if the next game is after mgspo and runs into mg1. because i hope they show the events of mg1 and mg2 ss in HD. mg2 ss was a really great game and id love to see young grey fox in action.

    despite another countdown this fills me with hope that kojima isnt toying with us and it will be another big boss game,
    although it may seem certain enough now, nothing is ever certain with hideo kojima, one of the many reasons he's so notorious/popular
