Japanese publisher saw sales rise to $2.56 billion for last nine months of 2008, thanks to 4.5 million sales of Metal Gear games; full-year outlook lowered, however.
Solid Snake continues to get it done for Konami. Today, the Japanese game maker reported its results for the April-December period, saying that total revenues for the first nine months of its 2009 fiscal year grew 5.1 percent to ¥234 billion ($2.56 billion). Konami's profit margins also continued to outpace the year-ago period, given that net income rose 17.3 percent to ¥17.8 billion ($195 million).
Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in June, continued to be one of the company's top performers. The top-rated action adventure helped the Metal Gear series sell more than 4.5 million units in 2008. (GameSpot initially reported that Metal Gear Solid 4 sold 4.5 million units by itself, but the figure includes all games in the franchise. GameSpot regrets the error.)
For the first nine months of its current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, Konami has sold 22.35 million software units across its various franchises. In addition to Metal Gear's gains, the publisher has been bolstered by the success of its Pro Evolution Soccer franchise, which has sold more than 7.41 million units during the nine-month period. Other top performers for the game company include Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia for the Nintendo DS, as well as installments in its perennial Dance Dance Revolution rhythm franchise.
Despite Konami's positive growth during the period, the publisher provided a warning to investors that the global economic downturn will have a negative impact on its full-year returns. Citing slower consumer spending and a strengthening of the yen, Konami revised its full-year revenue and profit outlook downward. The publisher now expects revenues to rise 3.2 percent to ¥307 billion ($3.36 billion) during the year, with profits now projected to grow a mere .3 percent to ¥18.5 billion ($203 million).
Here we go again Well if it isn't biased george. Did your precious Xbox 360 happen to get the RROD? GeOW2 outselling MGS4 isn't remarkable because of two reasons. 1. 360 has a larger userbase than PS3 2. I'm positive more people bought GeOW2 for the purpose of playing online while MGS4 offers a better single player experience. Also selling 4.5 million copies isn't the apocalyspse for Sony. I didn't hear PS3 owners saying it was the end for Microsoft when a certain platformer called Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts only sold 144,000 copies. Get your head out of Microsoft's *** already.
Gears 2 sold more domestically than MGS4, that's for sure...sales wise internationally, Gears 2 was garbage compared to MGS4 (esp. in Japan). So I guess it depends where your talking about
It is hard to believe that Gears 2 has already outsold MGS4 when it has not even been out half as long! A bad sign for the PS3.
The best way to get rid off the fanboys is probably going to be just to ignore them. You know who you are and we ALL know who you are. @Fanboys You are not getting paid to bash and trash talk for a system so please stop posting on here and then getting your panties in a bunch. "BETTER" is always a matter of OPINION!!!!! What works for you may not work for others, we are just so fortunate now that if we don't like something we have other options. I have enjoyed Metal Gear even back in the days of the NES and have gotten all of the games and kept mostly all. Hideo Kojima has delivered games that I truly enjoy and I have thanked him by buying them on DAY 1. Keep up the good work Konami and please give us another ZoE and another Castlevania game.
@xdeiri Whats all this frame rate issue about? The only games I've seen with frame rate problems are bad ports. & xbox360 has plenty of those as well.
only 4.2 million units sold... Gear of War 2 has sold over 5 million units so far and it was released later on in the year If konami wants to make real proffits they need to sell on muilty platforms!
Jehuty-88 do you have a game called heavenly frame rate? oh sorry i meant heavenly sword, why do you think the graphics were downgraded in resistance 2 ? what bourn out escaped with out frame rates problems oh good i can live a happier life now
i disagree with sony fanboys wanting konami to keep this game playstation only. one the game belongs to konami not sony. two konami are a third party and should not side with ms sony or nintendo. port this to xbox konami and you will get even more sales but well done on your 4.5 million. but keeping it on playstation will only make fanboys think it is sonys game and sony do not deserve any credit for your masterpiece konami.
this fanboy crap is getting stupid on all sides, i wanna talk about games not hear little immature boyz argue with their poorly researched facts. @xdeiri what frame rate problem, have you seen burnout paradise no frame rate problem there. The problems come from poorly made ported games such as fallout 3, but there has been no problem with exclusives such as metal gear solid 4 (godly game). get your facts right.
its insane how idiotic fanboys are these days, at least back in the snes / megadrive days there was a very distinct difference between the two consoles. it just seems so dumb and petty to get so worked up over it now, you should all go get a life and stop obessing over such trivial points... its not even funny anymore
billyjunxix Posted Feb 7, 2009 4:42 pm GMT @ puppiemaster -You're so pathetic, stop being so hypocrite. Do you even hear yourself?! RROD is a bad thing and you make it sound like a good thing. That's just sad. For me I just really loved MGS4. Hideo were always here, waiting for the next MGS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I never said it was a good thing, I suggest you stop trying to wind people up on here and go and actually buy a console with your pocket money.
@ xdeiri -You too. This thing is really getting sad. And please stop this..you are all just making a fool of youself. Okey lets just say that you win from this argument so you could all stop acting like a fool. NOT! Hahahahaha! For me, I still and always love MGS4. Nothing new..always here waiting for MGS5.
@ puppiemaster -You're so pathetic, stop being so hypocrite. Do you even hear yourself?! RROD is a bad thing and you make it sound like a good thing. That's just sad. For me I just really loved MGS4. Hideo were always here, waiting for the next MGS.
yah keep whining about the cheap crap made xbox while it is crushing your expensive well made ps3 and oh plz can you tell me why your expensive well made ps3 is having problems when it comes to frame rates ? speak the truth plz and nothing but hte truth, may god help you
Good job, Konami. Now, can you make a Castlevania on the magnitude of "Symphony of the Night" for us? :D
@akiwak - very well said my friend. Hahahaha! I just laugh at those silly fanboyz couldn't win on their arguments againts you. And the only method you do is tell the truth. Hahahahaha! For those silly fanboyz "You want the truth?, you can't handle the truth".
This is one of the greatest masterpieces of all time with the likes of RE4, God of War, and Half Life. Its one of the best games I have ever played.
Hah, with 4.5 million sales why would Konami ever want to bring MGS4 to xbox 360. It would be too much of a pain and last time I remember there was a ps2 to xbox MGS port it sold really badly. No mgs4 for 360.
i forgot how much i love mgs4, cos i started playing again the other week since those podcasts came out. i hope they keep making metal gear games in the future, but with a new character. btw konami, it would have been pretty cool to play as raiden in this one, seeing as now he's some kind of super ninja.
Apart from MGS4 I can't think of many decent Konami games of late. I used to be fond of them, but I think they've really declined since the old days of the 1990s both in terms of quality and quantity of games released.
kavadias1981 will you seem to have some hatred against nintendo you self, will as i saied before, fanboyz fanboyz whacha gonna do whacha gonna do when nintendo come for you, get that through your head, that if you have one
@bdelegal - I like your comment. It is very flattering to have a 360 owner wanting a PS3 game so much. Can I suggest you do as my younger brother is in the process of; sell your 360 (he is selling his unused Wii too) and buy a PS3 instead, you wont regret it.
Has anyone else had trouble trying to register themsleves for a KONAMI and GAME ID? I'm dying to get on MGO!
@xdeiri - of the 40 million Wii owners, 35 million are non-gamers, the other 5 million are gamers who also own either a 360/PS3. I don't think a MGS would sell that well. You seem to have a rose tinted view when it comes to the Wii, my friend. It prints money for Nintendo and only Nintendo, get that through your head. Third parties don't get to share in their success no matter how many games they release for the Wii.
Good for MGS4. For me i feel that this game should stay exclusive. Exclusive games brings out the best. If gears were to go multi (assumption), i believe it wouldnt be as good. Nowadays, only exclusive games are worth the $60 bucks (or $80 in my country). Multi platform games just dont cut it no more. Some are fun but most are meh...
This could be more good reasons why konami should publish additional prequels to the saga. Prequels like Big Boss' origins ; the philosophers and historical patriot's founding and their inspiration to the actual patriots existence, the origins of raiden.. might all be great ideas to start with. But despite all this, a Metal Gear Solid live action movie should still come into being.
i agree with dontonydeluca! MGS is the fist (and the only 1) game that can make me cry:cry i played MGS 2, and when Otacon lost his sister, he cried, and me too...you know, the story is very dramatic, complex, and humanist.. basically i love films too, then no problem w/ lot of movie cutsceness.... i like it but i dont have much money 2 but PS3...oh
@greenhillscone That's exactly the type of ignorant mentality that causes arguments. I'm no fan of MS and I prefer Sony, but seriously, you're not representing Sony or Sony fans any better when you go off on such a childish tangent like that.
akiwak Posted Feb 6, 2009 9:55 pm GMT puppiemaster In the words of Game Informer magazine: "even the vaunted Xbox 360 Elites are crapping out at an unacceptable rate" RROD #1 most disappointment of 2008 according to Game Informer. I'll take their word over yours, sorry.... even ronX360 can vouch for it from personal experience. I will own a 360 in the future again but at its current state and price I would rather game on the PS3 for now --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was not knocking the PS3, I'm only a fanboy of gaming, not a singular gaming company, I can only comment on my own experiences and that I had better service from M$ than Sony and given the number of RROD consoles out there 4 days is pretty amazing. I play on all of my console all of the time, to be allianced with a single console only means 1 thing, you miss out on some great games.
whoa I thought i clicked on a problem page for RROD for a minute, but its not, after double checking its definitely a page on how mgs4 is doing so well ,congratulations mgs4 and everyone who took part in making it and to everyone who purchased it (brilliant taste) , brilliant game ,end of........
Can't think of a game that deserves it more, the only thing is I think this game and franchise deserve much more
Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour. Full Story
