Kojima open to more Metal Gear spin-offs

Series creator Hideo Kojima says he could entrust franchise to outside developers for spin-offs, but not core titles.
Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is open to the idea of more series spin-offs. Speaking to IGN, the industry veteran explained that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (developed by Platinum Games) was a success, and more series offshoots are possible.
"Initially we thought this spin-off with Metal Gear Rising was kind of an exception; it was a new thing for us," Kojima said. "But that said, it went remarkably well, and working with Platinum Games we were able to achieve a sort of synergy where the final product was greater than the sum of its parts."
Asked if he would allow a Western developer to work on the Metal Gear series, Kojima said it all comes down to whether or not the partner is the right fit, regardless of region.
"You know, honestly it's not a matter of choosing a developer in Japan or in the West. It's not even an East versus West kind of thing," he said. "It's just finding somebody who can really understand the world and setting of Metal Gear. … You need to choose somebody who would understand the subtle nuances of the cultural aspects of the franchise. If we could find somebody who could understand that, who could handle it well, then that's definitely a possibility."
Though Kojima is open-minded about future spin-offs with external studios, he made it clear that core entries in the Metal Gear series will never be farmed out.
"Numbered titles in the series will always be created by myself or at least created at Kojima Productions," Kojima said.

This is probably a terrible idea, but who thinks a tekken style game with MGS characters would be cool? :D
As long as the spin-off games are developed by reputable studios I have no issues.
I mean... just look at Silent Hill. Konami has messed that franchise up.

imo it'd be cool to see more metal gear spin-offs, but i'm not so sure about a MGR sequel... for me it's an ok game, but that's it... gameplay was fun, but the campaing was too short! besides the main story and some characters were just plain stupid... a spanish samurai? a hulk-like senator?? but i guess that's fine cause after all... it's a hack&slash game!

Sam is brasilian not spanish. If you had listened to the codec conversations you would know this. It was also explained why he got a samurai sword and is fighting like one.
Before the Senator absorbed the "energy" from the Metral Gear Excelsus he was pretty normal looking for a guy that played college football and was in the navy. Maybe he always ate his spinnach?
Btw: If you're a fan of the Metal Gear series you shouldn't criticise this game for stupid characters. Doublestandard much?
1 Like @H4num4n yes i am a metal gear fan! hell, to me snake eater was the best gaming experience i ever had... guess i was just expecting more from this game, i don't know. i'm on my 2nd playthrough right now, maybe i could change my mind after that... thanks for the reply anyway.
Yes, it clearly doesn't hold up to Metal Gear Solid standards, but it is a hell of a good hack&slay imo and i played almost all of them :D
If you can see past the differences to the stealth Metal gears and take the game for what it is and what it wants to be, i'm sure you will enjoy it.
And thanks for your cool reply, other MGS fans may have answered differently.
2 Like First let me say Rising was an awesome game. With that said, the story was balls punchingly stupid. Metal Gear is my favorite series hands downs. So obviously I know how to look past rediculous plots. But I died multiple times in the final boss fight just from laughing so much. IT WAS SO DAMN STUPID!

I'd love to see a spin-off where you play the pilot of a Metal Gear, perhaps working for a PMC. Being a mecha fan I shot my load when you got to control Rex in MGS4. Not sure who I'd want to develop it though. My favourite mech gameplay outside of Kojima Productions was the original Lost Planet, but Z.O.E. is probably the overall best anyway.
I hate myself for suggesting it, but we could also get a squad-based shooter centred around the Rat Patrol prior to MGS4. It'd be an excuse to bring back multi-player as well.
I would love to see them bring back the MP I miss playing MSG4 online and MGS3S for the PS2 those were the days but Im sure it well be back in MGSGZ
1 Like Rocksteady can do a Spin-off!! Easy. Maybe do a story about a genome soldier from the 1st Solid or do a Meryl game. But honestly, all I want right now is a Rising sequel.
a backstory with the boss, a spinoff with ocelot, something about the cobra unit... there are a lot of possibilities, either as classic MGS stealth games or something different (a shooter starring ocelot, doesnt sound too compelling but depends what you make of the material...)
spinoffs can be good or bad, the MG universe has a lot of good story material, depends on the developers if the gameplay is worth it...
and bring MGO back!
David Cage is in a room somewhere raging at Kojima. Speaking of which I remember when Kojima kept saying he was done with Metal Gear... Funny how a good amount of ppl here are the same ones bashing other studios for making sequels.

@evil-zodiark DmC was alright in my books, it was still Devil May Cry aside from the radical new artstyle which fit the tone of the game perfectly by the way but just imagine if they would make a spin off of Devil May Cry where Dante has to infiltrate military bases and sneak around in a cardbox that would be awkward XD nah fun aside point is DmC stuck to the DMC formula wheras MGSR went a completely different gameplay route
@Printul_Noptii @evil-zodiark gameplay wise DmC is a dumbed down hack and slash while the older DMC are the most hardcore H&S games along with NG....
@evil-zodiark @Printul_Noptii yup its dumbed down by a good bit maybe because it was made by Ninja Theory a british based studio and remember almost all japanese made H&S games are harder because japan likes their H&S games hard xD anyway Ninja Gaiden (except NG3 that one was cakewalk) should have its own scale for being hardcore and so should have DMC3 which is the hardest DMC by a long shot but to its core DmC is still Devil May Cry even if its dumbed down wheras MGR doesnt connect as much to the old MGS games and thats what people will always point out.
MGS has such a deep layered story I am glad it only remains in the creative mind of Kojima but I think spin offs just wouldnt do the MGS name justice.
@Printul_Noptii Not sure if you're bashing Metal Gear Rising or just highlighting the differences in how the game should be (and was) approached.....
@PlatinumPaladin @Printul_Noptii well I played the Xbox demo of MGSR and to be honest its not my cup of tea even thou I appreciate the great effort PG put into it and they somehow managed to make it play awesome similar to their previous work Vanquish and Bayonetta but... people who are used to the oldschool MGS will probably hate it, its not that its a bad game its just that the gameplay is so different. The problem is MGS was always about complicated conspiracy plots and emotional choices players had to make aside from the military stuff and stealth but MGSR is fast paced hack and slash in your face very similar to Ninja Gaiden and God of War its just that and I think thats what oldschool MGS fans hate :/

@H4num4n @Printul_Noptii @PlatinumPaladin On its own merits MGR is decent I would say I can clearly appreciate it for what it is but I will always compare it to old MGS games as well and that is funny because I remember during MGS2 at the end where Raiden finally gets his sword I was so psyched to finally cut some soldiers into pieces (you only have the sword during the last part of the game for a short time and during the final battle I think) :D but when I played the MGR demo I was like "meh whatever" :/

Who said that an old school mgs fan has to dislike hack&slay games? It shouldn't be a negative point that a hack&slay game happens to have a Metal Gear theme to it.

I prefer less spin offs. I always loose interest in them and it kills a lot of my interest in the series afterwards.
Have the game unopend waiting for me at home. Just need to find 4 hours to play it lol. Can't wait for MGS5!
1 Like I actually never played the core series but Rising is making me like the universe and now I want to play the core games. This was, I believe Kojima's intention, to bring in a newer audience and expand the fanbase. It was a gamble because if the game turned out horrible he could of lost fans.
So basically, It won't be long before we see a MGS FPS or TPS.

this spin off looks horrible. i was really amped for metal gear solid: RISING not this POS! If i wanted to play DMC or Bayonetta, I would have. Keep this hack and slash sh it out of MGS. Thank you
