Kaz Hirai: PS4 is 'first and foremost' a video game console

Sony CEO asserts the PlayStation 4 as primarily a gaming console, but adds that more non-game functionality will be revealed in time.

Following Microsoft's plan to position its upcoming Xbox One as a living room entertainment device, Sony Corporation president and CEO Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai has stressed that the PlayStation 4 is a video game console first. The news came as Hirai spoke at the D11 conference held this week in the US, according to The Verge.

"The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers. If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3."

In addition, Hirai said that Sony would reveal more PS4 functions not related to video games. "Providing other non-game content is an area we will reveal and talk about in the coming months, but it's first and foremost a video game console."

Sony Computer Entertainment's E3 press conference will be held on June 10, just before E3 2013 starts.

I'm not a fanboy for either system--I have both a PS3 and a 360--that being said, there is no way I am going to get an XBox One if all that is being said about it is true. Downloadable games only--no discs? Always on camera? Internet connection required at all times?

No thanks.

@JMcN76 You can turn off the camera, and it wont need a connection all the time. At least that's the latest, it could change.

PancakesRock15
PancakesRock15

@106473 @JMcN76 Yeah, not exactly true. IIRC the camera must be on and connected at all times for the console to function. The internet thing is half true: you need to connect to the internet at least once every 24 hours.

HOW SONY WILL LOSE A CUSTOMER (JUST LIKE MICROSOFT HAS):

? If the PS4 has a camera that is being constantly powered.

? I'll need an internet connection everyday just to access my games.

? Sony make me register all games to ONLY one system.

? All my games will have pre-owned fees and the money goes to Sony.

If Sony implement even one of those plans I won't be buying one.

@mwamba1 Yep ur not the only one hopping ships, however waiting on E3.. no not for the Xbox One but further details on what Sony has in store for us as far as System details (Hoping there not even somewhat resembling what Microsoft has done) As far as both systems controllers.. I like both, but have always been more comfortable with the dual shock and feel its far superior than Xbox.. IMO anyway

@digits52 @mwamba1 I found the PS controller a bit too small and I play a lot of FPS so I preferred the trigger shape of xbox pad. also the positioning of the analogue sticks. No big deal though but thats probably what I'll miss the most. I have noticed though the new shape of PS4 controller (RT and LT)is more trigger-like in shape which is nice.

Sony was taught a serious lesson the first 2 years of the PS3s life, and this shows that they've (atleast on some level) learnt from their mistakes. But the X1 just completely baffles me. Sure x1 has a sweet controller, but they called it the x1, I mean they called the 360 a 360 because they didn't want to seem like they were behind the competition, so to rival ps4 they call it xbox one, and then copy Sony's mistakes by releasing yet another entertainment box to collect dust under your TV. pff just seems strange is all... perhaps it's all about some government plot to install kinect 2.0 in your home, lol

Haha my favorite part of this is they probably made their system an all in one device then saw the xone reveal then looked at eachother and said "shit... time to act like we didnt make the same system as the xone"

@lbryson8 That's exactly what I thought too! :p I could see em at Sony going ape sh!t..."everyone listen up..complete overhaul..lets scrap the page from M$'s playbook..ASAP!" hahaha..looking forward to PS4 getting it right and cut all the MS BS out of their console..

@Enforcer246 The cable/tv market is different from the gaming. I think they are trying to draw in other customers besides gamers. Same way Sony did with the PS3. They were trying to draw in the movie and television fans with Blu-Ray. It seems Microsoft might go back to their roots with exclusive games. The same way they launched the original XBox, which had like 20 exclusives in less then 12 months. I still have Mad Dash, Azurik & Amped.

-Ps4 won't require to be online, Xbox One yes.

-Ps4 won't have any DRM for used games, Xbox One yes.

-Ps4 won't be region locked and for all gamers that import (me included) this is VERY important. Xbox One will be region locked (ARE YOU SERIOUS?????).

-ps4 have a much better gpu than Xbox One

-ps4 have far superior rams

-I don't know how much HD ps4 will have, but Xbox One have only 500Gb, way too small despite all the crap that their "analists" say. This way you should add to the console's price also the price for an external hd since it would be almost mandatory.

-Xbox One will work ONLY with Kinect connected........quite creepy....

CONCLUSION: There are way too many reasons to buy a ps4 over an Xbox One. We'll see about game exclusives, but something tells me that overall Ps4 will destroy Xbox One almost surely.....

@MalakTawus I'm hoping for a 1T HD or more I got a 250 GB the other year and filled it up in less than 3 months.

keep it that way KAZ..just know tho..the minute you start bringing up that DRM, always-on, SPY CAM BS..think of all the SONY supporters, and the new XBOX supporters (my self included) you gained in the last week..and see all that capital evaporate!..let that marinate in your brain for a minute..

blackace

@sneakthief81 At least they aren't marketing it as a Blu-Ray player like they did with the PS3 for the first 2 years. lol!!

sneakthief81
sneakthief81

@blackace @sneakthief81 that's true..but even then..I kinda understood why they had to do that..they were coming in late in the game and they needed to make up for lost revenue..so they wanted to push a cheaper blu-ray player..BUT for their sake..I hope they don't try and take a page from the MS's playbook and do Sony supporters dirty..like MS is doing with its supporters..

blackace

@Newmon @sneakthief81 @blackace That's true. I hope they do right by their fans as well. I would love to have one of these next-gen consoles. I don't want to just have to buy exclusives only.

Newmon
Newmon

@sneakthief81 @blackace yeah, I hope you're right.  MS is kinda teaching them what-not-to-do and sony better not take that as what-not-to-do-at-first-but-do-later.  And the blu-ray marketing probably worked for them, catching some of the forward thinkers during the HD format battle.

Sorry Sony - I just don't find your games fun.  I played the heck out of my N64 over...what exactly was good about the original Playstation?  I played the original Xbox over your underpowered PS2, I played my 360 while my PS3 gathered dust, and I have no desire to follow history.

At least for me, Sony just misses the mark when it comes to gaming.  Always has and after three strikes, always will.

I am finding very difficult to take your statements seriously. Did you honestly say that the N64 had a better library then the PSX? Outside of 7 to 8 notable first party titles on the N64 such as Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Party, Mario Kart 64, DK64, and similar Nintendo noted titles there is very little else in regards to 3rd party support which the PSX had in spades.

Castlevania : Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid, Grandia, Alundra, Final Fantasy 7, 8 or 9 take your pick, Silent Hill, and Gran Turismo 2, being a small list and I can easily come up with another 10 to 15 games easily (all being released on the PSX and unavailable on the N64)

It's been a long time since 1996, I'm sure if you simply google "Top 25 PSX games of all time" majority of the lists are similar and If you don't recognize at least 10 of the games on said lists, I'll go so far to say you are too young to have experienced them, or been living under a rock.

As for your statement saying anyone who owned an Xbox 1 and a PS2 would say the Xbox 1 being better, well we are just going to have to disagree on that.

Disregarding Sony exclusives such as Gran Turismo 4, Shadow of Collosus, God of War, or Naughty Dog releases such as Jak or Rachett and Clank., the PS2 also had equally huge 3rd party backing over the original Xbox or Gamecube.

Yes I'll concede the Xbox had some decent exclusives like Fable, Ninja Gaiden Black, Sudeki, Knights of the Old Republic, Dead or Alive 3, Forza 1, and of course Halo, there was very little else on the Xbox.

Of course, I know you are going to say none of the games I listed are "good" but opinion baring there is a difference between something that is recognized as a good and something you claim to dislike, evident by a large majority of the gaming community that has been praising these games for their quality over the past decade.

Let's also disregard any future 360 ports of the some of the games I listed being re-released on it because I'm simply making this statement from the point that none of these games were available on any Nintendo or Xbox console as of the time of their release.

I'm sure someone will simply try to write your statements off as an intentional troll, but I give others the benefit of the doubt, of course that all depends if you even take half the time to read all of this that many others would not bother with

@alrepairs @thezenhu  I would go Pc for sure. I think the Wii U had potential, but somehow and somewhere it fell short.  Nintendo has a knack for staying in the minor leagues for console gaming, even though they have the tools to be at the top.

Sony's official PS4 tag should simply be "It's the exact opposite of the Xbox One!" They honestly don't need to say or do anymore. Whatever fictional sales they would have lost due to piracy will be made up for 10x over simply by Microsoft eating so much chode. I truly hope they realize that.
