Journey was PSN's best-selling game in December

Acclaimed downloadable title has jumped up 18 places since November.
Thatgamecompany's downloadable title Journey was December's best-selling PlayStation 3/PlayStation Network title on the US PlayStation Store, with the widely acclaimed adventure buoyed by numerous awards over the holiday season, including GameSpot's Game of the Year award.
As detailed on the US PlayStation Blog, the game jumped up from its 18th-place finish in November. The original Mass Effect, Far Cry 3, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, and The Walking Dead rounded out the rest of December's top five best-selling PlayStation Network and PlayStation 3 titles.
Other notable entries included Monolith's Lord of the Rings MOBA Guardians of Middle-earth at number nine, and Valve's Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (which remains unavailable on the European PlayStation Store four months after launch) in 10th place.
Sony's other big indie title, The Unfinished Swan, which is being sold together with Journey in a retail bundle, did not make the top 20, though cult hit Tokyo Jungle finished at number 12.
Little Big Planet Vita was the best-selling Vita title on PlayStation Store, and the Black Ops II Season Pass was the top-performing PlayStation 3 add-on.

I grew up playing games, and I love innovative games - but I still haven't quite gotten into Journey, and I don't see what the fuss is about. I've only played it for a few hours so far. It seems more like a curious oddessey then anything else? I'm obviously missing the point? Do I just need to play longer?
Of course it sold a lot of copies.. when it got GOTY from two popoular places, people will be going to check it out.
2 Like "the game jumped up from its 18th place finish in November." Some Journey, huh? Going from no. 18 to first place is no small feat, especially for an indie game. Good to see that PS3 people like these kinds of games, it might encourage others (not just PS3 game makers) to make games that are different, but also different than Journey. It would be a waste if all its success made everybody go "Look! A successful game. Let's make a clone and try to get in on that success".
PSN GOTY maybe. Overall GOTY? No way. As creative and innovative Journey is, even The Walking Dead was a better play imo. But that's what GOTY all boils down to...people's opinions.
@HipHopBeats - walking dead was a less intense version of heavy rain with more of an intimate story...journey is something different, and if we are talking about emotion, the last 15-20 min of journey gave me more emotion than all video games ive played in my life combined...

Also, more Tokyo Jungle please, that game is so insanely good, it gets addictive so fast and actually has an unconventional plot revealed in interesting ways, was surprised by just how much I liked it, they really should have publicised it more!

@DiamondDM13 The retail version of Journey is interesting if you like thoe have the OST of Flow, Flower and Journey plus some "behind the scene"

4 Like I enjoyed Journey, for sure..... I particularly liked *SPOILERS* the ending where you are really struggling through the snow.... only to falter and perish. Really beautifully done.
I didn't think it was GOTY material though, far from it. Great fun, and beautiful to look at, but there's no way it was better than say, Far Cry 3, or Dishonoured....
@SicklySunStorm Yeah, Journey was beautiful in every sense of the word, but as a game that I experienced in 2012, it was no way the best. It was unique and all, but the play time was too short and all I was left thinking was "Huh, yeah that was neat. I liked it. Game of the year though? Hehhhhhh-ll no. It was good though."
I think it's obviously worth some nominations, and probably even worth winning, but overall game of the year to me is a stretch. I'm not shallow, but I guess certain games make different people feel different ways, and I believe Journey is somewhat known for being experienced differently by different people. While I can pick the areas where I think people thought that game was "emotional" I just didn't feel it myself, not strongly anyways.
My time seeing the beloved Mass Effect characters in ME3 was much more meaningful to me than either trekking the world in Journey with someone or 'solemnly' doing it myself.
1 Like @SicklySunStorm i feel the same way. Journey did some very creative things but it was just too short to really be GOTY. I would like to see a much bigger project using the same type of dynamics used in this game for sure.
3 Like The lenght of the game isn't a problem for me if it is good. I mean, on the NES you had game like Mega Man that is no longer than Journey and still sold at 70$.
So I think it is perfect as it is and deserve to be GOTY.
I waited all year for a price break on Journey. I have Flow and Flower, but I didn't want to drop $15. Thankfully it finally went on sale for Xmas, and I got it for $7. Yay. :P

ppl wanted to see what the excitment was about with journey....then went back to playing games
I've bought the retail version with Flower and Flow and their OST. to me it is has good if not better than all the mindless shooter we have nowaday.
@Mr_Mark_Legion most ppl who played Journey, liked it a lot. Yes, like many other indie games have short gameplay value, but it's one of the best (and unique).
Glad to see that game awards may of had a effect on sales. Journey is fantastic and everyone should play it.

@Nexozable to be fair XBox arcade has FEZ which is better than Journey IMHO. I have both consoles and a gaming PC so I dont really have bias I play everything except Wii which I leave for the kids.

Careful Icarus, do you really want to go to war against Halo with Journey as your ammunition?
Journey did really well, and was wonderfully received, but PS3 exclusives often suffer a lot of backlash when these direct comparisons start and they end up the only ones to suffer. Do your team a favor and enjoy the win, and don't start a battle that will have actual consequences against what is considered a great game.
