Jason Rubin hints at next project

Naughty Dog cofounder sets up MySpace site to promote first project at Morgan Rose, Iron and the Maiden.

In March of 2004, Jason Rubin confirmed his departure from Naughty Dog, the company he cofounded with Andy Gavin in the mid-'80s. At the time, Rubin said he wanted "to take on new challenges and create something new."

Details on that "something new" are starting to emerge. Rubin set up a MySpace site earlier this month with a logo for his new company Morgan Rose's upcoming game, Iron and the Maiden, along with a silhouetted character and a short post hinting at what he's trying to accomplish with the game. It reads:

"After 20 years at Naughty Dog I've decided to try something new. 'Iron and the Maiden' will be my first solo project. It isn't 'Crash Bandicoot,' and it isn't 'Jak and Daxter.' This is something new. Raw, Uncensored, Uncut. It's been in the back of my head for years looking to get out, and I've assembled an incredible team to bring it to fruition. Stay Tuned..."

Rubin confirmed for GameSpot the authenticity of the MySpace site and said he would reveal further details about the game there, but likely not for a month or more.

I wonder if this is still being made into a game, or if it's just going to be a comic. Because the comic is coming out at Aspen Comics.

I liked most of ND's games quite a bit so I'll think optimistically about what he's planning.

After Crash 3 - Naught Dog worked with some fellows on GLI for Crash Team Racing, or CTR - as it became known. It was a direct counter to the more successful Mario Kart. It was also a very fun game. The team looked at Mario Kart, the original CTR and new title Nitro Kart (which is not developed by Naughty Dog, btw) as the inspiration for Jak X. After CTR - the IP was sold and the work on the original Jak and Daxter began. Whatever games after CTR were created were not by Naughty Dog and as they have no input into their creation, are not a valid point for dissing. Naughty Dog has some good plans coming up - more to be revealed at E3 on that, but it is Morgan Rose where something new and exciting is coming up. Iron and the Maiden is Jason's dream game - there is some hard work to be done - but the team Jason put together should allay your fears - this is the best for what he has in mind.

I understand why he left Naughty. They stopped progressing, all the stupid crash games after crash 3 sucked.

I have followed Jason Rubin closely since his days with Crash and "The Way of the Warrior", and already knew about this MySpace. He does have an ideal that is very different. More will be revealed shortly, and it's something very different, totally unexpected - and will make your jaws drop. E3 will reveal a new chapter. That's all I can say.

Naughty Dog is great because of the fact that they consistently put out good games...granted, they aren't anything that'll change the face of gaming, but they are fun, enjoyable titles. There's no doubt in my mind this upcoming project of his will be lots of fun with the track record he had with Naughty Dog.

Naughty dog is not really that good. They make decent platformers that sell well, but hopefully him on his own will give him the chance to impress.
