Japan game charts: September 4-10
Remake of original PlayStation game nabs top slot; overall weekly sales sluggish due to lack of new titles, end of summer holiday season.
The kids and college students are going back to school and buying fewer games as a result, according to digital entertainment analysts at Media Create. As a result, combined sales of the top 100 titles in Japan totaled 699,571. This is the first time top 100 sales have failed to break 700,000 since May. However, Media Create notes that growth is still at a relatively healthy level compared with the same period last year.
Tales of Phantasia: Full Voice Edition, an updated PlayStation Portable remake of the 1995 PlayStation role-playing game, stole the number-one slot, denying the Nintendo DS that position for the second week in a row. It was also the only new release to crack the top 10 and the first PSP game to take the top slot since the beginning of August.
Meanwhile, most of the previous week's top 10 games managed to stay somewhere in the top flight, with Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop being the lone exception. It lost its grip on the number 10 spot, yielding it to Mario Hoops 3 on 3, which slipped from seventh the week before. That week's number-one game, Phantasy Star Universe, fell to ninth after problems that have hindered its online play mode. New Super Mario Bros. retained its hold on the second spot.
New titles that made the top 50 included the number 16 game, Taiko no Tatsujin Portable 2 by Bandai Namco, and the number 18 game, Capcom Classic Collection for the PSP. The DS got yet another brain-training game, this one wrapped around a virtual parenting game in the form of Unou no Tatsujin: Hirameki Kosodate My Angel, which launched September 7 and ranked 22nd overall.

Daaaang Nintendo... 8/10 of the Top 10 are yours... they must be doing something right over in Japan.. lets hope they know how to please the USA as well as they do Japan.
I hope they bring TOP to america this time because i was never able to play the PS1 version of it (*sob sob* had to play the Snes one) still it was a good game and anime i hope they translate it because my Jap isnet that good anymore
Tingle RPG.......... ...................
I wonder how much the chart is going to change with the Wii and PS3 coming out?
Japan must love there handheld systems another reason why the gamecube has had such few titles nintendo is making most of its money off there handheld system.
Japan rpg is great!!
Well the DS has been toppled this week but until next...
DAYUM! the japanese really love the DS!

Sorry to ruin ure day, sonyphiles:P
Still an overall victory for the DS!:D
dang.....DS still owning.......
I'm more of a DS guy then a PSP lover, but it's nice to see the PSP have a #1 on the top ten list again.
Japan is all about RPGs and weird DS games
japan is all about rgps and anime
I never got why Namco remade ToP for PSP when they only remade it for GBA earlier this year. They remade ToP for the GBA in 2003... And, Gamespot is wrong. The SNES version was released in 95. The PSX version was in 2001.
nooo sonnyyy
Correction: Japan is all about that DS, huh? ;)
Japan is All about those Handhelds huh?
I think Japan is all about handhelds now. My guess.
Deepfreezed didn't they sell lot of PS2s in Japan? Only one game on the list what is the point of all those PS2s? your a complete idiot. I would rationlize why but I think this comment is also a waste of time.
omg look @ those DS games.
congrats PSP!
didn't they sell lot of PS2s in Japan? Only one game on the list  what is the point of all those PS2s?
Well poromenos I hate America's sport games and America's ignorant gamers.
i hate japan rpg's and japan gamers
Wow do you tards ever stop complaining? Who cares if it's a port/remake as long as it's a good game and people like it? It's only Japan anyway.
Great but we need some exclusive
A PSP game on top? Took them long enough. But it's a port of an old game. Just goes to show the PSP's capabilites... Oh well, I love the Tales games and I'll definitely pick this up when it comes out since I never got around to buying the GBA version. This game might finally be the thing to breath life back into my PSP.
yeah! good news for the PSP. oh, wait. Its only one title. Oh, wait. Itll be off the chart next week. Oh, wait, its just a port. NEVERMIND GUYS!!! :D
Sweet, another non-exclusive remake for the PSP. Hope it enjoys it's slot this week, wave buh-bye everyone!
Sweet. Another remake.
I'm glad, the PSP is a great system with awesome games and deserves to succeed. I hope Atlus release a Persona port.
yeah PSP right on !!!
What the heck? Namco just released a GBA version of ToP last year. Why did they make a PSP version?
oh wow a PSP game at a top of a list... thats a suprise
A Tales Of game...ofcurse.
:o A PSP game.......:P
It seems to me that the companies are using the PSP to remake their games. Maybe it's easier or cheaper for them. But that's some good news for us gamers. Yay!! PSP.
hahaha thats right. GO PSP!
cool cool
i really want an english Tingle RPG.
another psp port. Big deal. Look at the rest it pretty much all ds. I am excited to see Wii there instead of ds vs ps3.
So I guess no one in Japan cares that they've already played Tales of Phantasia on the Super Famicom, PlayStation, and Game Boy Advance? Well, I guess they had to get a new version because the GBA cartridge sticks out of their DS Lites. :)
Wait for tales of tempest and we'll see who's laughing! and the only reason for FFIII not being in the top is because they sold out and Squenix didn't saw it coming
Yay for another PSP remake game but NDS is still dominating the chart!!! BIG YAY for NDS!!!
he he he,hello sony good to be back
FFIII drops to 3rd!
japanese ppl really like them portables
Seems like NSMB will never leave that chart.
That's good... for PSP owners...
