A slew of hit PS2 and PSP games at last restore balance to the Force...or at least to Japanese software sales.
For months, Nintendo DS software has owned the Japanese software market. The handheld's domination culminated in late August when every single one of the top 10 selling games was a DS title. However, it appears that the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable aren't ready to make any concession calls.
Titles for the Sony platforms captured four of the top 10 spots, including the two highest positions. All four games are new, having been released just this past week. They are Minna no Tennis from the makers of Hot Shots Golf, another Ruroni Kenshin game based on the popular anime and manga series, Capcom's over-the-top action game God Hand, and Ridge Racer 2 for the PSP.
In comparison, the DS saw just one new game crack the top 10. Nounenrei: Nou Stress Kei Atama Scan, literally "Brain Age: Brain Stress Measurement Head Scan," claims to be a brain-training game and healing device. Sold with the motto "A stressed brain can't be trained properly!" this title purports to ascertain the level of stress on the player's brain and alleviate that strain, allowing the player to move on to the brain-training portion of the game with a clear head.
Media Create expects that Minna no Tennis will be "a long-running seller, like the platinum-selling Hot Shots Golf 4 before it."
Chart japan_sales for date 2006-09-22 14:57:19
And now the hardware sales chart for that week..oh, gee! I guess the PSP is owning NDS...NOT! :P 1. Nintendo DS Lite 134,885 2. PlayStation 2 34,189 3. PlayStation Portable 26,995 4. Game Boy Advance SP 2,330 5. Game Boy Micro 1,244 6. Xbox 360 928 7. GameCube 630 8. Nintendo DS 478
Rurouni Kenshin ain't too old, Viz recently finished with the last volume of the series. Not sure how long its been out in Japan.
nice to see FF III have a spot before NSMB. and isn't Rurouni Kenshin very old now, thats why we don'n see new good Animes cause everyone likes the oldies.
i think the reason ds have lots of fans is games in ds are casual games its easy for every one to play.kids, girls all of them can play it without any problem(just like wii) but in psp...its hard for them to play it ....
yeah leonstars why don't you buy a palm pilot? SInce you're such a Sony fan, I bet you'll appreciate the Palm Pilot having better games than the PSP.
i might not be able to buy a wii at launch seeing how there's so many excellent games coming out for the ds
go sony you rock if i wanted a ds i would buy a palm hand held with a palm you got touch screen downloading of games and software or go buy me a pocket pc sony rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SONY SONY SONY SONY ALLLLLLLL THE WAAAAAAAY
Bleach Heat the Soul 3 was on the charts a long time ago. It spent one week on the top ten before dropping off into oblivion.
dudes do you think buying psp is good thing to do???there is only one game in this chart?????maybe like dreamcast psp wont last long enough.....(sorry for my poor english)
That's nice FFIII is on the top 10... I wonder how long will it be sitting there! I'm amazed a game like Rurouni Kenshin is doing that well, guess that's because of the re-issue of the manga series in Japan...
"1 PSP game out of 10 is impressive?! Come on, DS is dominating! Where have you been? They been pretty much dominating for months now. Its not a surprise. " HAHAHA Completely agree! How is this impressive again? DS is dominating!
.....No Bleach Heat the Soul 3 anywhere? come on. I'm pretty sure that a Bleach game could beat Animal Crossing.
haha anyone name himself Mariofan must be 15 or younger. hey boy you are not even allowed to touch GTA hahah! No wonder he thinks Wii360 is a system.
Yes, DS games seem to stay on the chart longer. Brain Training 2 and New Super Mario Bros. aren't going anywhere. Those PS2 games and PSP game probably won't be there next week.
wheeloftime24 said "ms wil break into japan. Its a matter of time, after showing their japanese line up. I saw nothing from sony worth buying, but I saw a lot from MS worth buying...." A game that plays like Final Fantasy I with "next-gen graphics" (Lost Odyssey) is your idea of something worth buying.....WOW man now I know why people buy a 360. In the other hand SONY is gonna kick a$$ with all the games they are showing at the Playstation 3 Game Show; oops I forget that MS and Nintendo are also there LOL. All the things that microsoft is showing are VERY CRAPPY. All the games are current gen gameplay with "next-gen graphics", that is not NEXT GEN. Have you seen LAIR, HEAVENLY SWORDS, DEVIL MAY CRY 4, METAL GEAR SOLID 4, MOTORSTORM, and WHITE KNIGHT?? that is NEXT GENERATION. All those games look AMAZING, AND PLAY AWESOME, I recommend you to watch the trailers of the gameplay of the games the PS3 is offering at TGS (or PS3GS) before saying "nothing from sony worth buying". Also if you look at the Hardware; the PS3 is a graphical monster console. Is so powerful that Team ninja Is making the cinematics for Ninja Gaiden Sigma with the ingame graphics engine; and looks SWEET!!! Take that you people that says "PS3 and the 360 are the same". If I were you IŽll be buying a PS3 as soon as I can
Understand that most PSP games don't stay on the top 10 for long. For example, the Tales of... game that was #1 last week is completely gone. Meanwhile, NSMB & Brain Age aren't leaving anytime soon. That's what Nintendo was getting at.
ms wil break into japan. Its a matter of time, after showing their japanese line up. I saw nothing from sony worth buying, but I saw a lot from MS worth buying. The ds once again dominated the sales. 3ps2 games and 1 psp game, vs how many ds games. I will stop there. Go psp lol
where is x360? If m$ has any hope in winning this gen they have to break into japan which is highly unlikely.
Well, I must admit that sony made a nice come back on the TOP 10 chart. It's really important for a company, it shows the success. And so devs will be more interested on it. I still hope that the DS will come back on top with more title. I want more game on it ! :p Well i can't say that more game on the ps2 would be bad either especially some good RPG ^^, even though it already has a lot, but I played almost all of them (those in english).
santiagochile 1 PSP game out of 10 is impressive?! Come on, DS is dominating! Where have you been? They been pretty much dominating for months now. Its not a surprise.
Nothing can stop NSMB anywhere. Also, I many of these PS2 & PSP games fall off the list. I feel sad for Japanese gamers. The reason DS games aren't selling better are because there are shortages of the games themselves. Go Nintendo!
awww....i wannna see some Square Enix new titles, such as trailers and ranks for Final Fantasy versus XIII
wow, this is like the first time seeing a DS game first or at least second since mario came out. 0_0
I am really impressed at Nintendo, not just the list but actually penetrating the non-gamer market with the brain-games and such with so much success that there are always touch generation games in every sale-chart Ha! What, you think people who don't own a DS are going out to buy one just for the brain-train games? It's mostly people who've already owned a system that buy the brain-train games, not new comers. Anyway, isn't this like the second or third week in a row that a PS2 game has topped the list? If you ask me, the only reason the DS got so much success was because of a lack of games on the other two systems, not because it had exemplary software.
Wow, 3,230,554 copies of Animal Crossing Wild World sold! That's AMAZING! And then add Brain Age, New Super Mario Bros, and you get...wow.
I am really impressed at Nintendo, not just the list but actually penetrating the non-gamer market with the brain-games and such with so much success that there are always touch generation games in every sale-chart  If they actually can get non-gamers to buy the Wii aswell then I will be extremely impressed. I never thought somebody could make a handheld game console, or a regular console that my parents would be interested in. But they are both interested in my DS, and that is incredible. If they will do it with Wii, is still hard to say. But they made the impossible possible with my parents considering DS, so they are definately on the right track in that market.
BYS2, for some reason Japanese people for the most part are apprehensive about buying American products. The first Xbox was a horrible showing in Japan, but the American and European markets helped it beat out the Gamecube overall. On X-Play(G4TV), Adam was on the streets of Japan, asking people if they would buy a 360 and all of them said no.
Here are the numbers since gamespot for some reason doesn't want to post them. 1. (PS2, SCE) Minna no Tennis - 226,976 2. (PS2, Banpresto) Rurouni Kenshin: Enjou! Kyoto Rinne - 75,007 3. (DS, Square Enix) Final Fantasy III - 57,057 / 655,533 4. (DS, Nintendo) New Super Mario Brothers - 53,089 / 3,080,126 5. (PS2, Capcom) GOD HAND - 48,280 6. (DS, Nintendo) More Brain Age - 34,959 / 3,186,871 7. (PSP, Bandai Namco) Ridge Racers 2 - 28,232 8. (DS, Sega)- Nounenrei: Nou Stress Kei Atama Scan27,890 9. (DS, Nintendo) Animal Crossing Wild World - 24,792 / 3,230,554 10. (DS, Nintendo) Cooking Navigator - 20,766 / 465,958 Ridge Racers 2 debued far less then the first one did. Seems sequels do far worse on the psp. Animal Crossing peaked up the movie coming out in December may send sales of the game skyrocketing. Cooking Navigator still going strong possible million seller heck it may do a Brain Age and still show in the top ten a year later. Sega's own trip to the Train Your Brain pheneomeon debuted with close to 28,000 copies. Final Fantasy III and other DS games are still under a production limitation due to DS cart shortages. It's why DS game sales are in such small numbers except for debuts with print runs of 500,000 units. Final Fantasy III is still selling out each shipment once again cart shortages hinder the massive sales. The playstation games should fall out of the top ten next week with them falling out of the top thirty next month. NSMB still going strong. DS games are breaking sales records as is the hardware. Nintendo has unleased a monster among the gaming populace. It's devouring Japan. When Pokemon Diamond and Pearl hit expect the DS sales to explode.
