DS reclaims top spot with New Super Mario Bros.; Nintendo's handheld joins PS2 in near-total dominance of Japan's weekly game sales.
Despite its title, New Super Mario Bros. was a return to Nintendo's roots, a throwback to the 2D side-scrolling fare of the classic Mario titles. New Super Mario Bros. also proved a return to popular form this week in Japan, where it reclaimed the No. 1 spot atop the country's top-selling games for the week of June 26 to July 2, according to data from Media Create.
The charts, which spell out the best-selling games of the week, reflected Japanese gamers' strong affection for the Nintendo DS and Sony PlayStation 2. Newcomer Boku no Natsuyasumi Portable for the PSP was the lone anomaly in the top 10, at No. 8.
Meanwhile, Square-Enix's role-player Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, which held the top spot in last week's charts, fell three spots to fourth. A new entry on the PlayStation 2, Super Dragon Ball Z, took second.
Three training games on the Nintendo DS made their presence felt. Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training appeared at No. 3, Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day at No. 4, and Eigo ga Nigate na Otona no DS Training: Eigo Duke at No. 9.
Elsewhere, last week's sixth-best seller--The King of Fighters XI by SNK Playmore--dropped off this week's charts. Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 also made a slight dip, dropping one spot to No. 5, as the real-life World Cup winds down in Germany.
Although they didn't make the top 10, a couple of games for the Xbox 360--which faces an uphill battle to claim a foothold in the Japanese gaming market--did appear on the charts. Sega's Chromehounds, a mech action game not yet released in the United States, appeared at No. 16. Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, which earned glowing reviews when it was released two months ago in the US, was the 24th best-selling title.

LOL Closed minded and biased? I own every system nintendo and sony has ever put out. I even own the original xbox and a lot of sega consoles. I will give any system a chance, but the 360 is just plain sh*t and not worth the money. I own at least one console from every company so don't tell me I'm closed minded because I don't want that overrated POS. I feel for you RYKH you must be one of the idiot sheep that got herded into wasting your money on that worthless system.
lol wow really, there will be a 360 game at number 1? pass the crack pipe, pal cos you're having too much. . and wow only one whole year after 360 released, you expect to see a 360 game in the charts? sounds encouraging.
Wait till you guys see the December-January japan sales charts wont you guys be extremely surprised when you see a 360 title in the top 10 (or #1 spot) That title my friends will be Blue Dragon.
wow, love to see the ps2 doing greatly i cant wait for this new Dragon Ball Z game also I would love to play New Super Mario I like this list more than the American, in Japan they dont like generic same crap shooters from the xbox
"wow lookit all the nintendo fan boys cheering for the DS. this is like the first time nintendo has EVER been better that sony. And yeah the only reason the PSP isnt doin so well right now is cause of the *lght* on the new DS. Grow up people DS is for 6 year olds who like to play Nintendogs and sh*t. And winner for the most idiotic post is...Gamer46! Seriously, you shouldn't make stupid remarks like this until you actually have some logic put into it. Nintendo has, and most likely, always will do better in the handheld market, no questions. Also, do you even own a DS? If the only game you've posted is Nintendogs, then I pity you. Also, it's sad that games like Nnitendogs are more polished than most of the games for the PSP. There, I said it. And, as a final note, even before the DS Lite came out Nintendo was ruling in the handheld market, so scratch that off. And the reason for this is the good games already made for the system. Sony, more or less, has a lot of ports for the PSP. Now, don't get me wrong. The PSP is a good system. But Sony had better shape up if they plan to beat Nintendo in the handheld market.
Wow, Sony even owns nintendo in Japan now also..............."AND THE UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD REMAINS................................S O N Y !!!! "
wow, when you consider how long the ps2 has had to build up its luser-base, those DS game sales are all the more impressive..!
Damn, MS is getting absolutely no love in Japan. I would just pull out of the territory until demand built up for the system (if it ever did).
is that 8 Xboxes sold...8!!!!! that is harsh "The one guy saying Xbox is a curse word in Japan is true and kinda crappy IMO. Its all good that we support thier game sytems and games but yet they won't support american made systems like 360 even though its a great sytem. Sorry but what crap and its simply because its american made." Also it only releases games that appeal to Western gamers and hasn't got any really good RPGs.
Go Super Dragon Balls Z!!! They are so cool!!! I'm Japanese, so I'm smart and have lot's of taste! Oh, and by the way... I'm not gay!!!

" Funny, im not a Nintendo Fanboy (only Nintendo console I have that is still being used is the GBA) and I am cheering for the DS. I guess its because I have been resepecting Nintendo more these days, and loosing a lot with Sony (Still love my PS2 though viva Final Fantasy XII). I can only imagine how much damage FFIII will do for the DS. Seriously though, I thought Fanboyism is dead, its soooo 5th grade. Peace people peace! :)

Hmmmmm... valkyrieprofile on PS2... I want to see it, maybe it's better then first one, who knows!
Not all the X-Box games that are put out in the US are relesed in Japan so the games they have to pick from are alot smaller. Plus Japan still only a small market in the gaming world so the X-Box unlike the PS2 does not make many Japan only games. There are so many good games that we will never see in the US. But because of the price of the PS3 Xbox may find it place in japan.

Its all good that we support thier game sytems and games but yet they won't support american made systems like 360 even though its a great sytem. Sorry but what crap and its simply because its american made. " Maybe its because Xbox 360 games dont appeal to the Japanese consumer. I recall from Bill Gates' quote that, in a nutshell, he felt FPS and Mainstream gaming are the top concerns for Microsoft's Xbox 360. Not really a statement that will bold well with prospects in the Japanese Market.
The only reason the DS only has 5 spots is because the newest DS game (NSMB) came out a month ago. Just wait till this fall when FFIII, Zelda and all the other games come out. I'm predicting the DS will still hold 6 to 7 spots even after the next gen systems come out.
I dont know how you say the 360 is crap. It is great consol, you obviously are a extremelly biased and closed minded person jacobs1282.
Ah them Japanese really know good games, and it makes me smile to see not one worthless 360 title up on the top 10. It's nice to see that not everyone is as easily herded as the American sheep (and I'm American) Go Japan, don't support the worthless pile of system known as the XBox 360.
Here are the hardware numbers: DSL 153,566 PSP 25,935 PS2 23,133 DS 3,504 GBASP 2,919 Xbox360 1,897 GBM 1,443 GC 1,002 GBA 17 Xbox 8

360, that's a good one  It's amazing how successful the DS is doing in both Japan and the States.
Love em or hate em, Japanese Gamers have the best taste in games. They loved Quality RPGs before they were juiced up in grahics, they can embrace unique games, and dont playe FPS and GTA :).
good for nintendo. i have a feeling that games sales charts will look kind of the same when the wii is released. i mean the wii titles will be on top.
Even though you may think 5 is good, it could be better, seeing as the DS has had a lot more up sometimes ...
I grew up with 2D Mario and i'll continue to enjoy it as I did before, u cant beet a classic game like mario.^_^
"WOW! No surprise there, New Super Mario Bros. is byfar the best game and the most fun I've had in a while. No school like the Old school. " I was done with Mario for years now, but this... this is really true. The new Mario is what remakes of GREAT games should be. Take a truly great game, and just amp up everything new tech can give. Not "take sonic the hedgehog on a 3d tour"... no... Just better graphics, amazing sound, and looooove. Oh feel the goombah love.
