Apple's thinnest, lightest iPhone ever hits new sales milestone after first weekend; more than 100 million iOS devices upgraded to iOS 6.
Apple's latest iPhone is on fire. The Cupertino, California-based company has announced that three-day weekend sales of the iPhone 5 have exceeded 5 million units. The thinnest and lightest iPhone ever launched September 21 behind a record-setting preorder campaign.
The iPhone 5 bested the first-weekend sales of the iPhone 4S, which came in at a then-record-setting 4 million units. The iPhone 5 is currently available in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. It will launch in 22 additional countries on September 28.
Apple reiterated that demand for the iPhone 5 has surpassed supply, noting that some who preordered a unit will not receive it until October.
Apple also announced that more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated with iOS 6, the latest iteration of the company's mobile operating system. It offers a range of new features, including a proprietary Maps app, as well as updates to Siri, Facetime, and Mail.

The bloody thing is so expensive in Malaysia, those retail fuckers are hoarding it and sold at RM3600 (USD 1125) for a 16 GB model and RM 3900 (USD 1325) for the 32 GB model, fuck this I might wait until Apple officially launched the device, but sadly why Apple Store in KL is like a fragmented, all price range crazily. Wish Maxis/Hotlink or Celcom launched at a lower price with contract. But thankfully all Iphone 5 is my country are fully unlocked :\

Good for them, I'm gonna stick with my old phone (which is also my first mobile phone) that you can only call and text with. I don't follow the motto "iPhone, therefore iAm".
It looks like youtube will probably not be available for the iphone anymore. I think apple took google to court and as u know google owns youtube now. I don't have the iphone 5 or any other iphone if some one who bought the iphone 5 can go and check or cornfirm if youtube still works, and it would be greatly apriciated.
@furrynic they removed the dedicated app, but there is a much better youtube app on the Appstore that you can download now

I just hate how these apple commercials try to brainwash us into thinking it is so much better than the previous phone. Does a slightly bigger screen and the ability to take larger photos really make it that spectacular? Apple will be old news soon if they keep trying to milk the consumer for hundreds of dollars every year

im a big apple fan, but the games on the apps store and their prolifiration bothers me.
its been years since i last looked at my iphone as a gaming device.
I wonder how successful Apple will become before people get tired of the iPhone. This trend will not last forever.
6 Like What people need to realise is... Wait for it... Technology changes! People moaning over a port change is ridiculous. So what if you have to buy a new plug for accessories. Things change. You don't hear people arguing over the fact VHS tapes won't play in their new Blu Ray players... As for this whole Samsung vs Apple debate, it's all down to personal preference. I didn't search the Internet for someone else's advice on what phone to get. I got a iPhone because I wanted one. Get over it. I did. Thank you
2 Like @ConkyJ20 Yes technology changes, but companies should give the consumer a chance to enjoy their product instead of forcing them to always buy the latest hardware. VHS tapes were around for decades before DVDs came out. And Even DVDs were around for quite some time before Blu Ray. How would you feel after investing hundreds of dollars on something to then find out the next year it is obsolete?
@ConkyJ20 The thing is, VHS players are at least 35 years old so of course we'd have to upgrade to DVD and Blu-ray. The Apple iPhones are only 6 years old and in that time frame, at least 6 phones have been produced, so people keep getting outdated every year and thus have to keep 'upgrading' over and over. It's like if Nintendo released a new console every year - people wouldn't like that.

Sony releases new cameras every year. 99% of tv manufactures release a new HDTV every year.

Phone contracts generally come in 2 year intervals. I'm upgrading after my 2 years expired. Pretty sure most people do the same, which is why phone companies, such as Apple, offer new phones every year, which compared to how fast technology changes, is pretty slow. Wouldn't ya say?

Hardware is NOT updated monthly "in the PC world." Obviously you don't know anything about "the PC world."
4 Like Also, I bought a MacBook Pro earlier this year and I absolutely love it. I've never used OSX before coming from windows based gaming rigs, and I find it really awesome for my productivity. Once I got used to it, I loved it.
For gaming, OSX sucks, that part is true, however, I have Windows 7 on bootcamp and if I want to play games, I just reboot in W7. Running Dolphin emulator with 50-60fps, plus games like Arkham City, Rage, and Borderlands 2...no problem at all. It can compete with most desktops out there. The hardware is fantastic after the intel and nvidia upgrades.
Apple does make great products and they're not some evil corporation. Seriously guys, get off your high horses.
@alkaline_DnB My issue isn't with what Apple offers, but the price they offer it at. As much as I like the design of Apple products, I refuse to pay the price. My laptop with Windows 7 cost less than half of what a Macbook Pro costs, and it has the same hardware specs. If apple were to lower their profit margin, then I'd gladly purchase a Macbook pro, but until that happens, I cannot justify spending a large sum of money on something that can be purchased for much less.

Even when you have to pay for really bad OSes, like Vista? Windows 8 isn't shaping up to be that great either so far. yet it will cost hundreds to upgrade.
Mac OSes are usually $20 to own.
But yeah, I know a couple thousand is a tough pill for most to swallow for a laptop, but it depends what you buy it for I suppose.

Wrong on both accounts. Windows 8 is faster, easier to use, and has a number of useful features added to it that make it a compelling purchase over Windows 7, especially since the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro only costs $14.99.

Mountain Lion is the only Mac upgrade priced at $19.99. Snow Leopard and Lion were $29.99. OSX upgrades prior to that were $129.
Apple has a way of constructing things that "feel" quality, but for the most part, you're still not getting the difference that you're paying for. Apple is hot for nice-looking screens, which can certainly be an advantage, but the actual engineering and the quality of the other components leaves a lot to be desired. Notice how the Macbook is slowly turning away from being a laptop and towards be a device. RAM slots are disappearing, as are other useful options. Eventually even the USB ports will disappear in favor of a proprietary Apple port, into which plug all your expensive little iDongles, because your Macbook is now just a fancy device. It's no coincidence that OSX is becoming more iOS-like; Macbooks are destined to have ARM chips inside them.
Apple doesn't want to build computers, Apple wants to build devices that they can update on a yearly basis.

That's the most baseless excuse for using Apple products that exists. Let's compare a Mac Pro to a PC:
The base Mac Pro comes with a 3.2 GHz quad-core processor with 6 GB of RAM, 1 TB hard drive, and a Radeon 5770. Its price is a staggering $2499.
Now, I have no idea what this is actually worth on the second-hand market, but I'm seeing 8-core Pros going for less than $1000 on ebay. These are only a couple years old, but one would expect to use their computer for a couple years before reselling anyway, so let's just say that your $2500 Mac Pro will be worth $1000 in 3 years, even though it probably won't be. By buying a Mac, you're losing $1500.
I could build a machine that meets or even exceeds the Mac Pro for under $1000 easily. That means that even if I throw it in the trash after 3 years, I'm still saving $500 over buying a Mac. So yeah, resale value means basically nothing in the world of computers.
@McGregor I happen to think the audio and video is way better on a macbook, running the same applications on OSX and windows in bootcamp using the same hardware, on the same laptop, it just looks and sounds better on OSX.
As far as the actual laptop itself goes, I think the trackpad functions way more efficiently, the keys feel better, the built in camera that comes with apps to use with it, and the overall form is nicer than the majority of laptops out there.
Yeah, it costs more, BUT...they also retain their value a whole lot better.

OSX sucks for just about everything, and I know this because I often have to troubleshoot my friends' Macbooks. Everything that OSX can do, I can do easier in Windows. Apple goes out of their way to obfuscate advanced features.
Not that it really matters anyway, because eventually Macbooks will have ARM chips in them and OSX will merge with iOS and Apple will be completely irrelevant to the world of computing (Apple wants to make devices, not computers).
@rarson I agree with the guy below me..you should own one before u can talk, because so far you're just saying your friend your friend your friend, which leads me to believe you've never owned any apple products and are just really bitter about it for some reason, and it's just leading you to troll nonstop.
I've owned Apple products, but obviously when I see that they're sub-quality and feature-deficient, I'm not going to keep buying them. Read my response above. I don't know how to better explain it to you. Sounds to me like you're just bitter that I'm vocal about my distaste for Apple products.
@rarson @alkaline_DnB Wait till you own one till you judge, I got one and it is the lowest maintenance computer I've ever had. Great for professionals and those willing to spend a little more, and while its not great in the gaming sphere it is capable.
I've never owned any Macs or Macbooks, but I've used them extensively. I used an iMac for months when I was living with some in-laws.
I also speak from experience knowing many people with Macs, and I see the problems that they have with them, because like PCs, they come to me with questions on how to fix them. Low maintenance? Not any less maintenance than a PC. Great for professionals? Professionals who do what exactly?
The notion that everything professional is done on Macs is simply untrue anymore. Anything that you can get on a Mac that isn't made by Apple you can get on a PC. And the stuff that Apple owns (like Logic and Final Cut) isn't even all that hot anyway. In fact, I liked those products better before Apple bought them.
Apple sucks at designing intuitive interfaces, that's the bottom line. Everything is easier to do with Windows than it is with OSX, and like I said, I know this because I've dealt extensively with both OSes.

2 Like Basically, at any given time, apple has one or 2 models of an iPhone competing against dozens of "Android" phones, and still outperforms all of them.
You get a solid phone from one solid company, instead of trying to choose from a number of phones with different features and different versions of Android, since not all of them can upgrade to the latest version at the same time, or they can't even upgrade the software at all.
Samsung finally made a phone that can compete, and it's not even going to be out a year before it's replaced by the SIV in February.
It has hardware copied from previous Apple phones, an app store that's still not close in comparison, and it's taken this long to finally make a phone to compete, and yet, it's still slower and has a lower screen resolution.
It's just sad to see so many haters on here.
and yeah, when new Android phones flood the market every month, of course they'll have newer features than an iPhone which is released every one year. Even then, most of the time they are playing catch-up.
@alkaline_DnB So you're telling me that a phone that just barely got a quad-core processor, LTE, and a larger screen is ahead of a product that has had that technology for nearly a year? I don't even want to get into the software. The Apple app-store may be able to claim more software, but honestly, the popular apps are available on both Apple and Android.
In reality, Apple makes a great device, but I think it's a stretch to say that Android is playing catchup in any category.
You're sadly mistaken if you think that Android is somehow devoid of developers. There are WAY more people making Android apps than iOS apps (because the market is much bigger).

@rarson I don't usually argue the "open source community", since the default response from iOS users' is something along the lines of, "that is beta software". In all reality, if you add the community, Apple can't compete.
@alkaline_DnB I'm curious as to how you define "playing catch-up". Because in my humble opinion, it's very difficult to play catch-up with a company that's taken half a decade to make the charger smaller and make the screen larger.
