Insomniac drops Resistance

Overstrike developer won't be making any more entries in Sony-exclusive first-person shooter series, according to CEO Ted Price.

Insomniac is done with Resistance. Speaking with VG247 at Southern Methodist University's Game::Business::Law Summit, CEO Ted Price said the developer was finished working on Sony's exclusive first-person shooter series.

"We won't be making any more Resistances," Price said.

Insomniac departing the sci-fi shooter series was first hinted at in August. At the time, studio creative director Marcus Smith said the company was ready to branch out from the franchise and was not slated to make a follow-up to Resistance 3.

The studio's latest project is Overstrike, which was officially announced at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. A squad-based stylized shooter, the game is the first multiplatform project at Insomniac Games.

Outside of Overstrike, Insomniac Games recently created a Facebook and mobile division dubbed Insomniac Click. This shop opened up last March, but there is no indication as to what the label is presently producing.

I had a hard time getting into resistance 3 because the game just felt unfinished to me. They should have put a little more care into the 3D too, whenever I zoom in I see two sets of crosshairs, and neither is hitting the target. Other games have gotten this right, I don't know how this game couldn't.

"On the other hand," Price continued, "we still plan on trampling the dry, sun-bleached bones of R&C's corpse well into the next decade, so expect the full PS3 release, 'Ratchet & Clank: To Uranus and Back' by the 2012 holiday season!"

good.. lets hope uncharted is next! im so sick of the same games over and over till i cant stand them anymore... sony`s devs need to take a lesson from nintendo on how to make their clasics last!

No doubt that Insomniac is looking for some of that cross-platform money. No doubt they're looking at projections of what their sales could have been if the Resistance series was also on XBOX 360.

No surprise here, they pretty much announced it in advance when the game was released. The franchise was good but each game left me slightly disappointed, it could have been better. I liked the third but the weak sales sealed the fate of the series.

Was Resistance 3 worth buying £10 new?

After how flat 3 was, maybe its good for the series to get a fresh start with another Company. 3's SP basically killed the Resistance world FoM and 2 made me love!
Not hugely lookin forward to Overstrike either based on the form of R3

    @Soothsayer42

Yeah possibly, and by the looks of this article 'branching out' in to Facebook and the mobile division just depresses me.

Who knows. They'd be fairly daft to give up such a strong relationship with Sony though. Maybe they'll just come back with something completely new for the PS4?

We'll see. Best of luck to them anyway

@firehawk998 - i blame the fanbase for the change in multiplayer. After playing dozens of hours on R2 I was shocked when I found out that Insomniac had to face a huge backlash byt he online community against the changes made to the multiplayer, and they cancelled their plans for releasing further add-ons because of that. R2's multiplayer was actually pretty good, a mixture of Modern warfare, the old medal of honor and Halo, but unique in its own way. I also didn't see why fans complained about the Single player too. I felt that it was superior to the first game, which I think is not that great compared to FPS of its time, such as Half life 2, Far cry, Bioshock etc.
I think they overrate the first game in comparison to the second one, which was an improvement in almost every way possible.

I've never been a fan of Insomniac outside of the first couple of Spyro games on the PS1. And I've really disliked the Resistance games. I never thought they were fun, at all. For me, there's not much hope for Overstrike. Whatever that is...

Hmm this is sad if there was one game that had a potential to be a huge franchise is was the resistance series. The SPs setting was unique, the levels were long , chimera looked awesome and the guns were fun to shoot. The MP was good in Resistance 1, but ( IMO) leaped to great lengths in Resistance 2 but alas for some reason they decided to turn resistance 3 mp into a COD clone. Whoever makes the next resistance best of luck.

That sucks a bit, but if "Resistance" had been swapped out for another R word in that headline sentence I would've been straight gutted. That certain loveable gun-crazy duo's 10 year anniversary is this year.

Resistance sadly never lived up to its potential. Can't say I'll miss it much. Hopefully, the VITA game is decent.

well, this is a proper shame, i liked R1, thought R2 was passable but loved R3. one of the best or at least funnest FPS campaigns in recent memory(except for the dispirit ending). i guess they'd rather flog a dead horse and bring out two ratchet and clank games every year. sigh...

You'd think they had planned on this well in advance of finishing 3. If that's the case, why end your trilogy with an awful finale? The game was good, but the ending was one of the least satisfying of this generation.

  • ZombehDino

    Posted Jan 26, 2012 1:08 pm GMT

A bit disappointing, given that the ending to Resistance 3 wasn't exactly the most satisfying way to end the story in my opinion.

Well still they have other cool games like Ratchet and Clank and Overstrike. Hopefully they'll undertake some crazy new project for current gen or maybe PS4. Looking forward to what they may deliver. Resistance will probably be given to another studio cause it is successful.

Its good for them, not like the series was on its way up, R2 was taking the game in the right direction and instead of building on that, they reduced R3 to a CoD clone, thats why me and most of the other R2 players didnt keep R3 for more then a week.

I thought Resistance 2 was a good game but as soon as I heard Resistance 3 was the first game to feature the horrid Online pass I had no further interest, I'd say Sony forcing Online pass on Insomniac played a part in Insomniac turning their back on Sony and I don't blame them.

  • SolidTy

Well, they gave the world a sweet Trilogy, but it's understandable they want to branch out and try new things. Maybe they can revisit it later, maybe not, but I will still dig Insomniacs games regardless. Resistance 3 was a top notch game, and yet many gamers that would have dug it skipped out on it for many reasons. I read all the time, people plan on buying it, yet we are here in January. A real shame, so I don't blame Insomniac.

They have to do what they have to do to stay afloat in this highly competitive industry.

The Resistance IP is owned by Sony, and Sony have already had PSP Resistance games made by Sony Bend Studio which got decent 85 at Gamerrankings/Metacritic. So fans of the Resistance series may see more Resistance from Sony Bend on the Vita, that's all dependent on Sony's plans though. Right Now, Sony Bend are finishing up Uncharted for Vita.

Also, Insomniac has said this before, but this time it made headlines. Remember, Gamespotters, Nihilistic Software is working on a new Resistance as we speak.

anyways the problem is sony's been giving insomniac the shaft for a long time now; they have refused to market any of IG's games the way they market their other exclusive IPs, Ratchet and clank, and especially the third resistance game is a case in point. I'm not surprised that insomniac is ditching sony by making their next project multiplatform. I thought the first Resistance was alright, but liked the second one especially the multiplayer (which I think is very underrated by the fanbase). Have yet to play the third one but I'm definitely planning to.

  • supertom221

    Posted Jan 26, 2012 11:54 am GMT

@RadView I don't think so. If anything, that would be Killzone, but both franchises were never as successful as HALO was. HALO was also popular because it was a good franchise from the start-- HALO 1 was an amazingly revolutionary game, HALO 2 even more so.

Killzone however, was a pretty forgettable and bland game for PS2, which only made it's big awesome debut on Killzone 2, which I proudly own.
Resistance had all good games, but the first one never got much publicity, it was Resistance 2 that made it shine above many others, but Resistance 3, while being an awesome game, still fell short of what RT2 was.

Gears VS Uncharted however, is an interesting comparison.

i never bought resistance 3 because there were too many other games i wanted more last year but that is kinda sad cuz i really liked 2 alot and wanted to play 3 eventually, kinda wish i got it now since they most likely canned resistance due to not as many sales as it deserves
