New $5 map pack for THQ's near-future shooter brings two new maps first to Xbox Live; PlayStation 3 and PC release info not offered.
Last month, THQ shuttered Homefront developer Kaos Studios, shifting work on the franchise to the publisher's Montreal arm. Though the game's original developer is no more, the title itself is living on with new downloadable content called The Rock.
THQ sent word today that the new content will arrive first on Xbox Live at a to-be-announced date in the future. It will be part of THQ's agreement with Microsoft that sees Homefront map packs arrive first for the Xbox 360. THQ did not offer a more precise release date other than "soon," and the publisher also did not indicate if or when it plans to release The Rock on the PlayStation 3 or PC.
As for the content, The Rock bears a 400 Microsoft point price tag ($5) and includes two new maps: Alcatraz and Bridge. Alcatraz takes place inside the San Francisco Bay's iconic island prison and will offer gamers close-quarter combat.
As for Bridge, that map has players battling near the North Tower of the Golden Gate Bridge and the surrounding area. In addition to the new maps, THQ said that new Team Deathmatch areas Waterway and Overpass will be included in the DLC.

@holtrocks you are a terrible debater, you have no real thought out points and when you are shown to be incorrect about something you change the subject or state something silly like getting upset that I refer to BFBC2 and BF2 when clearly you knew what I was talking about.... So yeah, I thought so! LOL
@Phatjam98 o don't pull that BS "ya i thought so" if more ppl were commenting and we said vote for which is better BFBC2 would get 80% of the votes
@Phatjam98 BF2 was released in 2005 for the pc only BFBC2 was released in 2010 for everything can't stand ppl that do that but anyway i am done arguing with you on this its getting old have a nice life.
@Holtrocks Sorry but there is no level detail what so ever. The levels are bare and do not look like they have been lived in at all. There is no character to the levels. When compared to CoD the levels are pathetic and the models do not hold a candle to CoD. BF3 looks 1000% better, but BF2 was not impressive when compared to MoH or CoD.
@holtrocks LOL yup, I figured you would just resort to comments that mean nothing. That doesn't even make sense as Homefront is an FPS, has a leveling system and customization, Team based combat, balanced level design, and every other feature that every FPS is built upon. The only thing it does not have is destructible environments, and as I've said, BF implemented that feature at the expense of level and model detail. Soo.... what are you talking about?
@holtrocks Again, my point is that just because one game does something first, does not mean that it is being copied in another game later. The idea that every game must rewrite the book is ridiculous. Games build off the last popular and positive development of several other games. FPS has been around for a very long time now and so far the only FPS game to do anything truly original is probably Prey with its portals. Prey is not the greatest FPS of all time, but it did implement an original idea with those portals, later adopted by the game Portal. So again, check your facts before squaring off with someone like me, who not only knows my game history back to the mid 80's but also worked in the game industry in the early 2000's.
@holtrocks I've been a gamer far longer than you have it seems and I know my game history. And BF and CoD copied Halo in that they use the same kind of control scheme and have multiplayer features. Really, BF and CoD copied Counter-Strike more than anything but given your narrow view of gaming I figured I would take short steps backward for you. So to clearly answer your statement, the first Red Faction came out in 2001 and introduced fully destructible environments as well as some very cool features of AI reacting to local hits like knee shots, head shots , arm shots etc. It was a PC game and was awesome for its time as far as destructible environments go. Counter-Strike was the first Real online FPS built on the Half-Life engine and is the reason FPS online games are so popular today. It focused on team based combat, balanced level design, and a point based purchasing scheme for weapons that is clearly implemented in all of today's team based MP.
@holtrocks The first Red Faction game came out in 2001, http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/redfaction/index.html?tag=result%3Btitle%3B7 check your own facts.
@Phatjam98 how the **** did BF and SoD ( not a typo ) copy Halo? and the first BF game with destructible environments was Bad Company which came out in 2008 and the first Red Faction came out in 2009 check your facts
@holtrocks LOL ok so we are gonna go down the "borrowed from" route huh? OK in that case, CoD and BF "borrowed" from Halo, Halo "borrowed" from Half-Life, Half-Life "Borrowed" from Quake, Quake "borrowed" from Doom/Duke Nukem 3D, and those games "Borrowed" from Wolfenstein 3D. Hence all FPS games are rip offs of Wolfenstein 3D? Please, that argument is weak at best. You would then have to concede that every MP war style game is a rip off of Counter-Strike. Because one game does one or two things similar to another game does not mean it is a rip off, or clone. A FPS must include certain elements in order for it to be a FPS. Any leveling system in any game must include certain elements. Simply because one game uses Vehicles does not me than no other game can use vehicles. So yes I agree with you, on the most basic level Homefront is a rip off of BF and CoD, in that they are all FPS, they all have a leveling component, and they all have vehicles in some fashion. In that same vein, did you know that BF is just a rip off of the original Red Faction with destructible environments? And that all games that feature team based online combat are rip offs of Counter-Strike? Get real with this. I'm tired of the statement that one game copied another. I read the same crap about Dead Space and Dead Space 2, 2 of the best games to ever be made, yet because they didn't do anything new, it got lower reviews because it just did all those "old" things really well. Its a cop out.
@Phatjam98 well i completely disagree with you on saying BF is not balanced BF has mastered balanced maps and guns and in the homefront review it he talks about how it borrowed from BF and Crap o Duty
@holtrocks Graphics and singleplayer are absolutly terrible in Homefront I give that up freely. However, the Multiplayer gameplay is much better than BF. The way they implement the game mechanics is just sick and addictive. The Leveling system, rewards and customization blows BF out of the water. The level layout design is balanced and keeps people from using only one tactic like sniping a whole round or camping in one area. In no way did Homefront copy the gameplay of BF. Just because their are vehicles does not equal a copy at all. The Ground Control mode alone is a leap beyond BF. Its cool that you love BF, but in my personal experience, BF's maps are extremely unbalanced, the game mechanics are closer to CoD, and the game modes are the same tired game modes in every other FPS war game. Graphically BF is better than Homefront, but the lack of detail in levels makes the environments look bare and unlived in, and when compared to CoD the player models are terrible. Having said all that, BF3 looks soo sick and it is on my list of fall games to pick up.
@Phatjam98 and cmon man the graphics are horid everything just ends up running together the game looks bad
@Phatjam98 i told you about the gameplay already its better in BFBC2 in Homefront its just trying to copy it if the gameplay was not good then why would the try to copy it?
It is interesting how when people do not have a valid argument or have no response to a challenge simply resort to moderating when there is no insult, or attack to warrant it. Very interesting.
@holtrocks LOL still not addressing the actual gameplay or design I see. Just going off critic ratings and sales figures huh. How special LOL.
@Phatjam98 lets see homefront got a 7.0 and Battlefield Bad Company 2 got a 9.0 and homefront sold just over 2 million units and Battlefield sold more than 9 million
@holtrocks Clearly you do not understand what it means to detail and environment so there is no point in talking with you any further. And I got in several matches and it was all snipers over and over and over. Absolutly terrible gameplay for a multiplayer when maps are made for snipers to sit and snipe on both sides the entire round.
@Phatjam98 so what your going around playing tea with the stuff on the tables? and you must of gotten in a bad game if there were nothing but snipers cause that never happens.
@holtrocks LOL you have got to be kidding me. BFBC2 has destructible environments, wooptido. They traded off the ability for destructible environments for no detail. All areas in that game are like no one has ever lived in them. Tables with nothing on them, buildings with nothing in them. Completly bland. Yes the Graphics on Homefront are about 3 years old, but it has great gameplay and the world environments have a lived in feel. You can have your destructable walls, I'll take actual game play. BF is MP is nothing but snipers, its pathetic. The maps are not well balanced and while it was an improvement on the first game it was nothing to go nuts over. So rather than argue about how BF has better gameplay than Homefront, you argue that it has better graphics and walls can break. One of the weakest arguments I've come across here. LOL
@Phatjam98 the graphics of homefront suck and when i get a tank and i shoot at a wall to kill the ppl on the other side and nothing happens somethings wrong since when can a tank not destroy a wall? o and BFBC2 map packs are FREE
@holtrocks LOL are you kidding me. Homefront kills BFBC2, I've played it, didn't like it, Homefront is the clear winner. Sorry BFBC2 MP looses big time
As bad as Black Ops is it's still 50x better then this game. I'll regret buying this game till the day I die.
2 maps? TWO maps? And you want $5 for them? LMAO. It may look like a good deal but you're basically paying $5 for 1/64th worth of the full game. Crappy little map packs should be free, or at least ridiculously cheap, they should be a reward for actually purchasing their overpriced game in the first place. Don't get me started on CoD...
The only good developer at THQ is Relic. If it were not for them, THQ would have gone bankrupt long ago.
The lag at launch kept me from ever putting the game back in my console for a month. Tons of lag still plagued the servers when I tried for the second time. Had such high hopes for this game and it smacked me in the face. Campaign was fun and the story had depth, but I don't see a second one being released.
@warhawk-geeby, Thanks, Syphon Filter has always been my all time favorite game series. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for a Syphon Filter game on PS3...some day : /
I like the story, it shows you what could happen. but it looks and plays like a regular xbox game, hopefully THQ fixes this in future Home Fronts!!! I want this game to compete with the big boys and have a rating of 9.0 or 9.5! I have faith in you THQ that you could do a better job with this game!
Damn, these dudes at THQ are funny. The online of this game is almost dead (the single player was released dead) and they are going to release a DLC .
i loved the demo, but for some reason i hated the retail game. Don't buy this. rent it first. the demo is deceiving.
@Gabe_Logan_666 Your username is officially the best I have ever seen on here. So wish the Syphon Filter games would grace our consoles again :( Come onnnnnn Sony. Sort it out. Oh in relation to this article however... meh :P
@Gabe_Logan_666 I was going to buy this game until they announced the fact that they had dlc maps ready before the actual game was even released lol.
The game is really fun but takes less skill than COD all u have to do is pick ACR, rack up 2000 battle points, get in a Battle Tank and get like 25-40 kills, still really fun game though and doesn't have a horrible community like COD and if your looking for a FPS this is a good choice really like a COD-Battlefield crossover intense, fast-paced, huge maps(why map pack costs 5$ because the maps are big), long matches, 32 players, no lag, and a good community this is really worth every penny great game 9.0 in my book.
I don't have this game but if your going to rip players off with DLC atleast treat us equally, don't let 360 gamers get to have all the fun first lol.
Bought this when it came out. Single player was great but way too short. It felt massively unfinished. Hopefully the sequal is alot longer!
this game was purely a rent (for its campaign that lasted shorter then your average hollywood movie)
Isn't kind of bad move to have timed exclusive DLC for a game that didn't do very well to begin with?
