well, i must have been living under a rock for the past 5 years because i think the graphics look pretty good, its not Crysis but it still looks damn nice
Flagship Studios' postapocalyptic shooter-RPG hybrid in mass production for October 31 PC release; single-player demo lands later this week.
It's common knowledge that when the gates of Hell do, in fact, open, they'll part on the aptly prophetic day of October 31. As a precursor to Armageddon, Electronic Arts and Namco Bandai Games announced today that Flagship Studios' Hellgate: London has gone gold and will commence its North American retail invasion on October 31 for PCs. A European release will subsequently follow on November 2.
Hellgate: London is the first project from San Francisco-based Flagship Studios, which formed in 2003. The studio boasts an impressive pedigree of developers, including Bill Roper, David Brevik, and Max and Erich Schaefer, who earned their reputation at Blizzard North on such projects as the original Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft.
Often likened to a postapocalyptic Diablo, Hellgate: London melds fast-paced shooter action with role-playing game item collection and character development. After the game's initial $49.99 purchase (a $59.99 collector's edition will also be available), the game can be played through in both single-player and multiplayer modes, and can also be upgraded to an Elite subscription account at $9.95 a month for further massively multiplayer functionality. GameSpot's previous coverage has more on the M-for-Mature game.
A single-player demo for the game is currently available on GameSpot. In it, gamers can sample Hellgate's storyline, as well as take on a few side quests on the mean streets of London's Holborn Station as either the blademaster or the marksman.
graphics dont make the game... especially a MMORPG - u can say WoW has great graphics, you cant say D2 had great graphics - even in its time... as Xeuton says "these are randomly-generated maps", its not easy to program, it is obvious that u can see the same sets of items on certain areas of each generated map, but the thing is that this game can and definitely will last a long time... the people who complain about paying... shouldnt be, because paying only gives MINOR advantages ... more character slots, more inventory space - nothing incredible - they mentioned "Phat loot"... well that "phat loot" will not unbalance gameplay, it will have different stats but not something superior to non payers because that would throw off the gameplay... like the stupid private servers of other games... so for all of you who cry about bad graphics... don't...because this game probably has the highest potential of all the games out this year..
If any of you complain about the graphics, just keep in mind that these are randomly-generated maps, and as a 3D game that is insanely hard to program. Not only that, but the game has the potential to last as long as D2 has, which is less than can be said for nearly any other game in existence. The beauty of paying for subscription is that a greater number of subscribers will get a progressively better set of upgraded content over time, since money = work for game development. If you want to whine about poor graphics, go ahead, but it's not gonna change the fact that this game is being made by a group of developers similar to Valve and Bungie in terms of their track record in game development.
This game is going to rock, Why do people judge games by the demo... It just depends on how the comany wants the demo to feel, if they want it do be great then its great, but if they want to make it just like they cut and paste it well then thats them but the final project is always the best!
This game is pretty cool and if all you're basing your opinions on is the demo then you have made a big mistake. I have played the beta and it keeps getting better everyday this game should be great by the time release gets here. The demo is really a poor thing to base an opinion on for this game.
It seems like alot of people are judging this game off the demo. I checked it out and wasn't too impressed but from what i've read up on looks like the demo is a very poor portrayal and incomplete version of the complete game. I think It's gonna be great
This game is pathetic ! I am so glad I tried the demo before I did something stupid......like....buy it on my trip to Best Buy next month ! Soooo many games coming out next month. This one doesnt have a chance ! You have been warned......try before you buy......this game is so bad , I almost felt embarrased playing it for a half hour hoping it would morph into its hype. No...it just simply stinks ! I have a high end system so I saw everything it has to offer.
Graphics are really not up to par. Levels in the demo were extremely linear and the cityscapes looked awful compared to modern FPS's. Game play is not smooth (talking about controls NOT framerate). I was originally psyched about this game, but I will not be purchasing unless I see some proof that this demo was just a bad dream. Agree that Diablo was much better, even though it's years old.
1) Graphics SUCKS looks like a 5 year old game (and yes i have a good system with a 8800 Ultra) Anyone saying that Hellgate graphics are great needs a new pair of glasses (like some people below me) 2) Gameplay is boring and AI SUCKS Diablo 2 was WAY BETTER Do not listen of what some Hellgate fanboys say...
Wow I'm loving this so far, I played both classes through several times each. No ammo needed, just lots of action, an interesting skill tree too. Game definitely needs the higher lighting effects to enjoy those pretty explosions. Looks like a nice blend of RPG drawing from some of the other titles out there - and a few twists of it's own. Can't wait.
Also still a bit annoyed that the UK arnt getting the collectors edition. Everywhere else is!!! I don't know if this is to do with UK game retailers just being Lame or what. You can import it and it will work fine (should let you sign up for whatever server you want and charge you according to your location), apparently. i spose all we're missing out on is a dye kit and a pet!! but still i'd like the pet!!!
The demo is cool!!! It does just stop and leave you hanging, but its still awesome fun to play. It only looks crap if you have a rubbish PC. Mine is fairly ribbish but it still looks cool. Just got a Beta code so that should shed some more light on what the final game shall play like. The subscibers get quite a lot more than the free accounts. Just check the official website to see what the subscribers get on the first patch!!! This game is gonna rock!!!!
I am pleased to say I find this game amazing, and I am a very harsh critic when it comes to what games I play/buy... This is definitely worth it IMO. Try the demo, ESPECIALLY if you are a D2/LoD fan, just keep in mind that it is a DEMO.. and so it is very short and very easy, (think of playing up to Den of Evil in D2).
Are you kidding me ??!!! HELLGATE DEMO WAS AWFUL Who would like that crap ?! Lets hope the final game is better from the demo I want to know what the reviews will say....
if you liked Diablo and Diablo 2 youll def like this game./ I played the demo and loved it. Obviously new school kids probably wont like it but who cares.
I beg to differ. The demo is awesome. Same old Diablo 2 feel with quests, loot and skill trees. Im definatly getting this game.
I have played the Demo and the game SUCKS Poor graphics Pathetic AI Swallow RPG elements If the final game is like the demo i am not going to buy it
I've been looking forward to trying this out for ages. There's been a lot of grumbling about it since the beta rolled around but I'm reserving judgement till try the final version..
First of all, believing any information EB Games offers is a waste of time, as they have no clue when an actual release date is, They just check a computer database for latest release dates, which could be months old. Believe in what the actual developer or distributor gives as far as a date for when its released. The US release date is 10/31, but depending on stores and when they get shipments, this could mean 11/1 or 11/2
WTF!!! no collectors edition in europe!!! That sucks!!! Especially when the game isbased in London!!!!
i may neve pay extra per month for a individual game but this one is so fully featured without it that i don't think i'll be getting ripped off.
EB-games in Denmark need to get their facts straight. Been trying to convince my mate who works in one of the stores, but he keeps on saying "next year" too. Don't know about all of you, but i've preorder my copy from a local store and everywhere I considered an option while pre-ordering had the releasedate set to Nov. 2nd 2007... (and it still set to that date btw).
nohabs.. gone gold in software business means the master is sent and cd is now in production. Not the same as music industry, where gold and platinum means breaking some sales number.
I live in denmark as well. Asked the same question in EB-Games on strøget. These guys have NO idea what they are talking about. They also told me that the beta was over and that it was a major disaster, and that the game for that reason was not gonna come out before mid next year. Don't trust their info.
Ive been involved in this game from day one...Been in alpha/beta for a long time...Let me tell you..This team is fixing bugs left an right..There also a month in advance than what they give the beta testers...So yes its possible they have fixed many of the bugs it had during beta... As months went on the game is fun and addicting... Also yes it has free multiplaying....So please stop saying its a mmorpg...Its only if you want the added content that you need to do the 10 dollar a month...Im paying for it only out of sheer love for this game... Yall are always saying give me some thing different...Well here it is...Its different...The apocalypes type game...With diablo mix involved...Why are some of you turned off..Well i know what it is you wanted these guys to make a diablo type game... There doing that also with mythos...Why not try mythos when it comes out...When blizzard does diablo 3 its not going to be the same, sorry...Not with the Flagship team developing this game...So the diablo error is over..Here comes the Hellgate error... Try the game out before commenting..My guess is youl love this game...
They are lieing about the November 2nd Release in Europe, i live in Denmark and were in EB games to ask about Hellgate London release they said at New Years Eve, So WTF?
Damn, I don't care if the demo is 5 gig I will still get it! Disappointed at the inability to test FURY though... They are releasing a trial in like a few months so I will play the trial whenever... VERY happy Hellgate has a demo though!
Merl57, PC gamer has already rated it, heres the URL for the final verdict page scan. http://www.hellgateguru.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/6-b.gif
Someone below said that they "alpha tested" the game. While this is possible, it is also unlikely. Mostly the public is brought on to "beta test" which is a much later stage of the game.
I was chosen to beta mythos their other game then i was chosen to alpha hellgate: london. In most cases you can't except for the fact that after alpha/beta testing so many games you can generally tell how a game is gonna turn out in what period of time and with such a short beta there is simply no way they could have crammed 3-5 months of fixes in the few weeks they have left.
Someone below said that they "alpha tested" the game. While this is possible, it is also unlikely. Mostly the public is brought on to "beta test" which is a much later stage of the game. In any event, as others have said, you can NOT judge a game based on an alpha or a beta. The demo should give people a fair idea of what to expect, but not a beta and ESPECIALLY not an alpha. My only problem with the beta (besides the bugs which will likely be worked out) was the interface. It was way too cluttered. That aside, the gameplay was solid, combat was very fun (compared to other dungeon crawls), and the atmosphere was excellent. I've got the collectors edition on reserve and will be getting the demo tomorrow.
Like most games i have played over the years the alpha and beta tests are usually not as fun as the real game. As most of you know those test are used to test the game and for the developers to find problems that arise in the game. I have been playing the beta and like the previous poster i do have to agree that there is a lack in some areas but like i also said its just a test. Playing the demo might give a better view of what to expect from the game. I have ordered the game and intend to play it. Its no diablo but it still looks fun. And just because a couple of people dont like the game doesnt mean everyone wont. Also i know its a little bit early but this game has alot of room for expantions. This is also the studios first game i have a feeling there will be alot of good things coming from them in the future.
I alpha tested this and unfortunately i don't have good news to tell you, at the end of alpha the game was what you would expect an alpha to end followed by 3-5 months to work out of all the bugs, balance issues, general game issues except the beta wasn't even close to this long. Unless they managed to fix all of the massive problems in that short amount of time i highly doubt it will be worth it, now for a bit of info on the game. If you are hoping for a diablo experience you will be greatly disappointed. First off the entire game feels like a single player game with a chat window, second there is no large variety in useful specs like in diablo 2, there is also a serious lack of itemization in the game with there being very few weapon types. And the most important thing was the combat just wasn't that fun and additive as say it was in diablo2 which made it quite painful to play/test it. Lastly you are gonna need a good cpu for this, while i'm sure they optimized it to give a better performance but running with a little bit above the min system specs with everything on low/off the game would drop to 1-3 fps during some of the bigger fights when i was playing solo, this would be much worse when grouping with others. While i was really hoping this was gonna turn out to be a blast, if your looking for the diablo experience this is not the game for you.
