HAWX pops up on Ubisoft's radar

French publisher unveils near-future Tom Clancy air combat game, now due on PC, PS3, and 360 this coming fall; first screens and trailer inside.

Last week, French publisher Ubisoft purchased the book, film, TV, and game rights to the works of all-American author Tom Clancy. This week, it unveiled the title and release window for the latest entry in the writer's military multimedia empire, the air-combat sim Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. First appearing on radar last September, the game will arrive this fall on North American PCs, Xbox 360s, and PlayStation 3s. Previously, the then-unnamed game had only a "2008" release date.

Developed by Ubisoft Bucharest (Blazing Angels), HAWX is set in a near future where private military companies (PMCs) have begun to supplant national armies as the world's top armed forces. Following a fictional treaty signed in Iceland in 2012, PMCs even begin to take over the duties of air forces around the globe. However, given said company's "lax" view of international law, the move leads to more conflict than ever before, leading the remaining nation-states to try to restore world order.

In HAWX, players will be able to fly more than 50 famed modern combat aircraft. Though Ubisoft did not name any planes specifically, the first screens from the game show both F-16 Fighting Falcons, Harriers, and F-22 Raptors engaged in dogfights over war-torn landscapes. Besides the single-player campaign, the game will have both a 16-player online dogfight mode and a four-person co-op mode through the full campaign.

Ubisoft is touting one feature of HAWX--a new type of technology called Enhanced Reality System. An airborne answer system to the cross-com system in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games, ERS will give players access to radar, missile detection, anti-crash system, damage control, tactical maps, and weapon trajectory control.

For more on HAWX, check out the just launched official Web site or consult GameSpot's previous coverage.

Blazing Angels (1&2) is still the ONLY arcade air-combat game I have enjoyed. Compared to crap like IL-2 sturmovik and Flight Simulator from MS which just ruin the whole thing by adding 200 controls while giving no arcade scheme at all for those of us who don't care about flight simulation. Since this is being created by the same team, I hope they keep the Arcade control option in like Blazing Angels. Looking forward to this.

I hope that they will make the planes fly more realistic! According to the In-Game trailer it looked pretty easy and unrealistic to handle. In 1988 my friend had an old computer with a Flight game that worked perfectly, since then I have never seen such a good flight game like that.

wow thats amazing i hope it is as good as it sounds. i wonder what the achievements will be like.. but all tom clancy games are great

I absolutely hate flight games on consoles. In fact, I wish they would just drop the whole idea. I have not seen one single flight game that is worth the money....not one. The lastest ones look pretty but have no substance whatsoever. Consoles just don't have what it takes right now to make a good flying game period. And since it is being co-developed for PC and console it just means the PC version won't be any better.

I'm just worried because it is being made by the same division that made Blazing Angels. That game was fun but it was no masterpiece. Hope this one is different.

seems like something to look out for in the coming months.

I was wondering what Ubisoft was doing! It looks like they are covering all the bases. Hopefully, it will blow all competition out of the water.

Sweet ! PC's lack of modern air combat simulators (or even arcade-ish ones like Ace Combat series). I dont remember anyting interesting since LockOn.

Okay that's sick, and from Tom Clancy? I'm waiting for this one.

I love the flying games. Hate they took them off the pc. Like back in the day, Jane's were the best simulations ever! Anyways, glad to see the genre is changing. Nice to be able to control more in the game.

I was interested until I saw that it's being developed by the folks who developed Blazing Angels. Those are crap!

I'm not a huge fan of flying games but this looks like it has taken Blazing Angels to the next step. BA was a very enjoyable game but lacked that killer punch, this looks like to have it. let's wait and see what further up dates we get from Gamespot.

"This sounds, and amazingly looks a lot like the "Strike Force" of Origin (1993), a PC flight simulation title, which was a fantastic game in almost all aspects. Very interesting... I may even go ahead and say that this title is a "rip off" ) -peyami" I think you meant to say "Strike Commander". That was a great flight game that I played many hours. I am not expecting a flight sim out of H.A.W.X. but I only hope there is not unlimited missiles like in Ace Combat 6. I

slayer12bot, your right they do over do it with using his name but on the other hand anything with his name sells nicely.

PMCs??? Haven't we been hearing that term in precisely the same context for the past 3 years while we wait for MGS4?? Surely with the ENTIRE Tom Clancy archive of work at their disposal Ubisoft could come up with something more original.

Way to overuse the Tom Clancy name, though it does look like a promising game.

"Besides the single-player campaign, the game will have both a 16-player online dogfight mode and a four-person co-op mode through the full campaign" And this is why I am sold. I was hoping for Ace Combat on the PC, but this will have to do. 4 person co-op? How awesome is that! PEACE

wow that was fast. I mean just then, Ubisoft were developing End War. Donno how this tom clancy game's gonna turn out, especially when there's no Tom Clancy as the driving story. we'll c.

This sounds, and amazingly looks a lot like the "Strike Force" of Origin (1993), a PC flight simulation title, which was a fantastic game in almost all aspects. Very interesting... I may even go ahead and say that this title is a "rip off" :)) This is not to say that it looks amazing and will not be enjoyed by many fans, including myself. And I do agree that it will be the "RB6 Las Vegas" of flight simulations.

The Harrier just better handle better than the airborne brick of a VTOL in that cruddy Crysis level!

V-Nine. .. Just so you know Captain Mitchell is the main character in the GRAW games series, the top gun reference is coincidence.

thenephariouson
thenephariouson

I think this will be to Flight Sims what R6 Vegas was to FPS (great fun with a great arcade / simulation balance). Although i think the 'Tom Clancy' brand name seems a little out of place in this genre as he is an Ex SWAT member and is more suited to Spec' Ops games (R6 & GRAW etc) as opposed to flight sims. However as its Ubisoft i have no doubt that it will be a good game.

Looks like fun, ubisoft developing this could mean its not uber realistic but arcady and real at the same time in a balanced way.

ACE COMBAT 6 WAS GREAT FUN.. i hope this game

NinjaMunkey01
NinjaMunkey01

so is this going to be more arcady like ace combat 6, or more realistic. i would like to think that it would be more true to life like their FPS games, plus ace combat already fills the gap for a good arcade fighter pilot game.

FAcorp, are you a old timer who can't let go by any chance. The sort who proclaims the things made way back when can't be over come. Combat Aces 6 wasn't that bad, though unrealstic they were fun.
