Industry-research firm releases list of top 10 game products through September 30; Bungie's shooter best-selling solo game product, followed by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, 360 Red Dead Redemption.
In September, the NPD Group changed its top software 10 list to reflect not individual products, but the combined total of games over all platforms. However, for the year to date, the company has released its top 10 list of SKUs (stock keeping units), which list the top 10 single game products of the year through September 30.
Unsurprisingly, atop the chart sat Halo: Reach, as the Xbox 360-exclusive game sold 3.3 million units domestically in just two weeks. That total was a sizable chunk of the $200 million the Bungie-developed game generated in its first 24 hours in the US and Europe during its first day on sale.
In second place on the chart, which did not provide unit totals, was another platform exclusive, New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Indeed, Nintendo platform exclusives dominated the chart, taking up five of the 10 slots. In fourth place was Pokemon Soulsilver for the DS, followed in fifth by Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Wii and sixth by Wii Fit Plus. Ubisoft's Wii-only Just Dance landed in ninth, just above the Wii MotionPlus-bundled Wii Sports Resort.
As for the rest of the list, the Xbox 360 edition of Red Dead Redemption held up third place, with the PlayStation 3 version not making the top 10. The PS3-exclusive God of War III finished in seventh place, just above the Xbox 360 version of last year's top game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

1) Halo: Reach (Xbox 360)
2) New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
3) Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360)
4) Pokemon Soulsilver Version (DS)
5) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
6) Wii Fit Plus w/Balance Board (Wii)
7) God of War III (PS3)
8) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360)
9) Just Dance (Wii)
10) Wii Sports Resort w/ Wii Motion Plus (Wii)

Geez. MW2 is still up there. It's also amusing that Soulsilver is there, but Heartgold isn't. Just saying. But there is a good enough mix of games up there to say all demographics are purchasing at near-equal rates. However, #2 doesn't make me happy. I don't like that game. Not one bit.
@wetdrop Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2. And only idiots buy games based on ratings. If you do, you miss out on some very underrated games.
Is everyone aware that PS3 has no exclusive games rated 9.5 on this website maybe thats why there not selling games. In fact the only game they have rated 9.5 is red dead redemption.
@ WilliamSmith45 As I mentioned in a previous post and as it says in the article multiple times, this list is from the beginning of the year up to Sept. 30. This is not the final list for the entire year since its not the end of the year and there are still many games to be released. Also it never says anywhere that no other game can compete with Halo. They are just stating how well it did in sales.
@medzZ3ro gears will not ever be on ps3 because like halo it belongs to MS the ip is Microsofts. Yes I do believe that epic will make games for ps3 just not gears.
@NeonNinja Good point about games being out longer selling more than fresh releases. Halo is the exception to that.
I read this, nodding along.. everything sorta makes sense.. and then... Pokemon. WHEN IS POKEMON GOING TO GO AWAY???
@NeonNinja You're right, of course. I let my anger get the better of me and I apologize for the "shining example" comment. I have no idea who you are and I lashed out just because you defended a genre that I have a special hate for. For all I know we might enjoy a lot of the same games. Truce? :)
@bonander You would actually have no idea if I'm the shining example of what you're talking about when it comes to gamers in America. You're making a judgment based off of me disagreeing with you about a genre. It's like I said, I refuse to try and persuade you about the FPS genre because your stance is, "MY OPINION IS THAT IT SUCKS." Not something factual for me to disprove and I refuse to try and change someone's opinion no matter how fancily they word their statements.
I had a 360,5 of them in 2 years do to RROD. So you all shouldnt judge me on my hatred for MS. Im just sayin this List is based off Sept sales to this date. What im sayin is this Article is basically sayin Halo Reach is #1 in the World and no game can compete with the sales of Reach.
Sign of a crappy economy - the best selling game of the year takes two weeks to become the best selling fame of the year.
This will all change Nov 9th. So this list cant be accurate. Halo Reach just came out in Sept and already there sayin its best selling game of 2010 which cant be right. It may be the best selling game of Sept-Oct but for all of 2010 just doesnt sound right.
@NeonNinja You are just a shining example of the type of gamer I'm talking about. Gamers in America, for the majority, are all to happy to play the same games over and over again, which was my overall point, and that makes me sad. SMG2 falls right into that category as well. Like I said, as a whole, we are a boring gaming community. I'd very much like to see this list for other countries. I'd bet no FPS's make the list. Mario, unfortunately would, because of it's family friendly appeal. Anyways, whatever, I guess we just have to agree to disagree. I realize that I'm part of a very small group. FPS's are here to stay and nothing I say will change that. We American's love our mindless violence. I'm guilty of that as well. I just prefer a more tactical way to do it other than aiming and pulling a trigger. Ugh, talking about FPS's just seems to make me mad. I'm sorry that you ended up being a target for me to vent my rage on. I'm done.
Its good to know what games are currently on top. I don't know why everyone is complaining and attacking each other over which consoles game made the list and which didn't because in reality the list will constantly change as games become big and eventually die out. Who knows, in a year's time, Adventures of Cotton Candy McGee in Chocolate Goo Goo land could be #1 on the list for all we know. This article wasn't written so everyone can talk about how good each console is, its to recognise which companies have made successful games that's it.
in my experience its always the new consoles with new ideas that start to dominate the market and for the most part xbox is the newest and freshes console out there. i've previously owned several playstation and nintendo products but like everything else thats been out for awhile it gets old no matter how many times they try to reinvent the systems its just still a playstaion, still a nintendo, and someday it will just be another xbox.
@Phazevariance It isn't too surprising, actually. If you think about it Halo: Reach is the only new game on that list being that it had a massive launch. Every other game has been out for awhile. These are games sold across the year so it stands to reason that games that have been out longer would sell more copies as opposed to something that was just released (again, with Reach being the exception to that).
@bonander I refuse. If you can't acknowledge on your own that genres do indeed evolve from their initial incarnations than there would be little point in telling you otherwise. You mention that the games have these new elements now but are in the end "prettied up Doom games." I suppose I shouldn't play Super Mario Galaxy 2 because it's just a prettied up Super Mario 64 then going by your logic. I believe my previous comment sums up what I think of your view just fine and I have little else to add to it.
@Phazevarience At least it's more recent than any of the Nintendo games on this list (excluding Super Mario Galaxy 2).
@Savior24: I agree. It's nice to know there are a couple smart people on this site.;) And, well, I actually just own a Wii, because I'm personally not a fan of those other systems (sorry, XBox and PS3 doesn't have Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, etc.), but I don't continually bash other systems just because I prefer one other! Think about it, WilliamSmith45.
@McGregor Hardware issues for the 360 have all but dried up. They're still out there, of course, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was 3 years ago. The newer ones run MUCH cooler and quieter; I still can't believe how much cooler my new Arcade runs compared to my 20GB Pro that died on me after my 2nd RROD; it's damn near arctic compared to the heat from the 1st gen 360s!!!
@WilliamSmith45 Okay, what are your reasons for why COD is so much better than Halo? You can't just say one game is another without backing it up. Which, if any, Halo games have you played, and what were your issues with those games to give you the opinion that it sucks so much? And OF COURSE Black Ops will have more total sales; it's on multiple systems! Halo is only on one, and for only being on one system, it's done pretty darn well!
I'm not sure why people say this list is "biased" aren't the numbers from "total units sold"? I own all consoles, but I hate to tell you PS3 fanboys this bit of bad news. The 360 out sold the PS3 for a long time, so there is a larger install base, which in turn equals more software titles sold. Unless it's a very successful PS3 exclusive (like God of War III) it isn't going to make this list. @WilliamSmith45 - #1 games aren't decided on sales. That would be like saying, "the 'so and so team' is the #1 team because it has the most fans". Granted video game sales are different, crappy games don't sell that well, and good games tend to sell better. But #1 game ultimately comes down to "#1 must own game" not, "#1 most sold game". on a side note, are people still having hardware issues with the newer editions of the 360 (pro and elites, not slim)?
@Evo8u Why not Epic said themselves they're open to the platform.Bioshock has come to PS3 same as Tekken went to 360.Also,Bungie are coming to PS3 since their contract expired, not with Halo but with a new IP.It's highly likely that it could eventually appear on the system.
@shafe-man Hey, pal, I loved pokemon when I was growing up as much as the next kid but I was no fool; I knew right away what they were going to do with that franchise. It's nothing short of milking people for every cent they got. Think about it. There are five generations including the upcoming games, each one having about four to six games on average. Looking at generation one alone, there are five or six games that were nearly identical except each one had pokemon specific to it and could only be obtained through trade for others. Oh, Yellow gave you a pikachu but it was still the same deal. You know? The generations after that didn't change the formula. Oh, they add one or two extra bells and whistles (you can change your gender, wooo, and now you can breed) but it's still essentially the same deal. Release two games that are nearly identical except each one has a couple pokemon unique to it so you have to either buy both or trade and each generation add maybe one or two extra features. The only major breakthrough I can see for the franchise is if they overhaul the fighting mechanics.
Same goes for God of War 3 but NPD = MS. I just don't take their opinions objectively... and at this pace... the industry will neither eventually. I am glad for Reach as I knew it would be big... but the lack of titles in the list just shows the extent of their home work.
@BigStik Ho-Oh's in both games. Kyogre is only in HeartGold. Sorry if I just spoilt the game for you, mate.
@WillSmith45 All you have shown in that Post is that you Personally don't own a 360, and are a Fanboy of a Different console yourself! This article was saying NOTHING about being a Fanboy, but you brought it to that level because of your own fanboyish beliefs! Everything you posted was asinine to say the least. Many of us here own all 3 consoles, and understand what is or isn't a good game for any particular console. We aren't a bunch of drones who just buy a game because of a Marketing strategy; we know what is or isn't fun! We don't need you or anyone else slandering the games we play because it's on a console that you don't own, because you are a fanboy yourself of a different one; or rather don't have enough money to buy all 3, so you solely stick with the one you have and bash everything that isn't brought over to that one console that you do own! Thanks for construing the entire article to form your very own tenuous fanboy arguement!
@ WilliamSmith45 That's why this list is "As of September 30". There are still plenty of games coming out this year that can change the list such as COD, Fallout (which just came out), Assassin's Creed, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 just to name a few. Besides Halo sold so much because it's a good game so people are buying it. If you're thinking most of Halo's sales are fanboys then COD will be no exception as it has a similar situation.
pointless article to fuel fan boy wars good work gamespot give us worldwide sales charts or dont bother..........
@WilliamSmith45 I've made this argument before: Halo set the benchmark for the current FPS genre. It brought the concepts of "wait and heal" (love it or hate it is a different discussion) and limited weapons carry, where before you'd be carrying a dozen different weapons at the same time. Pretty much every other FPS on the market right now has gone the same direction. As for COD owning all, well, COD has turned into a yearly shovelware product with minimal changes version to version. Final point: stop worrying about which system had more titles on the list, play the games you love, and stop wasting your time attacking the ones you're not a fan of! Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's crap!
Red Dead on either system (PS3/XBOX360) for the win. Bring on the ZOMBIE love next Tuesday. Just in time for Halloween.
@hordaak Preach it, brother! I remember having the same arguments when I was a kid. Just keep faith with the fact that if we were able to outgrow it, then the kids making the trolling comments here will outgrow it, to.
