Marvel and 343 Industries teaming to tell Master Chief origin story; first issue due out in September.
Before he was Master Chief, the Halo protagonist was John 117, an adolescent stolen from his parents and placed in the fledgling and unproven SPARTAN II program. John's transformation from boy to defender of the galaxy was explained in Eric Nylund's novel Halo: The Fall of Reach, but the franchise doesn't plan to stop there.
Comic book publisher Marvel and Halo label handler 343 Industries have announced a partnership that will bring a comic book adaptation of Halo: The Fall of Reach to shelves this September. Its narrative will follow the novel's storyline and will relate the events leading up to Xbox launch title Halo: Combat Evolved. Those same events will be recounted in the forthcoming game Halo: Reach, due out in September.
The comic will be penned by Brian Reed, who has written for both games and comics, and drawn by Felix Ruiz, who illustrated the Marvel comic Marvel Boy: The Uranian. The first installment in the four-part series, Boot Camp #1, arrives this September for $3.99, alongside the new game in the franchise.
Halo: Reach will be the last title series creator Bungie will develop for the foreseeable future, given its 10-year exclusivity deal with Activision for an all-new, unknown property.
Great. Now that Bungies almost out of the picture Microsoft is seeing how much money they can get off Halo -_-
Honestly, I thought Chief was much more bad@$$ when you didn't know what was under the helmet. Leave it up to the player. But I guess Halo is going the way of Star Wars and most every Sci-Fi saga. Too many extra stories and information from different sources that contradict each other and not enough canon.
Hmmm, must be a lot of angry Sony Fanboys here giving thumbs down on everything. I thought you kids grew up and got real lives, guess not. Yes its Master Chief, he's the most iconic Xbox character, get the **** over it.
This is great news. I love the stories told in the Halo universe. Sometimes it's better to sit down and read a comic book/story book than play a game for me.
@ thorughfire Apparently a lot of people, considering that Halo: The Fall of Reach has sold over 1 million copies and it and The Flood were Publishers Weekly bestsellers and the next three books were on the New York Times bestsellers list.
@TheTHCGamer I donot think we have to worry too much about 343 Industries messing up Halo. One of the biggest things about them is that they do have former Bungie Employees with them so that works out for me personally. We will see what happens though, I am not worried about it, but it does not mean things can go wrong, or things can go great.
IMO you fu**** up microsoft when you let bungie get away because there arent many game developers that are as dedicated as bungie are.
if you want to succede in team deathmatch in halo you have to act as a team. after a while you realize that the gameplay in MW2 is terrible and theres no point in playing it. MW2 isnt rewarding at all to play which is why i prefer halo. everyone always praises IW but imo they arent that great of developers. they didnt do much to make MW2 a different experience compared to MW and in fact some people prefer MW over MW2. hell they even used some of the same maps as DLC and to me the games graphics look about the same as MW. hey the kids love it though since you dont have to do well at a game that takes no skill. long live halo. i will say one thing i do like how MW2 does its matchmaking where if someone quits someone gets put in there place so teams arent lop sided. the game however is garbage.
i love the halo franchise a lot of people talk **** about it but i personally love the franchise. its a helluva lot better than the COD games which centers its gameplay around camping (care packages). anyone who gets more than 5 kills in a row in CODMW2 is a camper sorry but its true. not only that but how do you release a FPS without a ranking system. in MW2 you rank up even if you play poorly and dont get me started with all the BS that happens during a match. how many times have i shot someone with a shotgun point blank only to get stabbed once then die. ill watch the kill cam and notice the person i shot has a red screen but ill be dead hmmm makes no sense to me. i doubt one little swipe with a knife is stronger than a shotgun blast but thats the COD world for you. also do people even act as a team in team deatmatch or does everyone run around just trying to rack up kills?
@wavelength121 How could you even make a decision after one chapter? I haven't read the book coz I'm not really a Halo fan (except the first one) but you can't judge any book on the first chapter.
I have been unimpressed by what 343 has put out about halo... if it isn't from bungie it isn't the truth... hell they got the forerunners completely wrong in halo legends. guilty spark tells master chief strait up that he is a forerunner, so they were obviously humans hence the ark was on earth, not another alien species. So until i see John's face from bungie, it doesn't count in my opinion. and the halo encyclopedia has some of the same issues. not to mention we already saw his face as a child in the first halo 3 tv spot...
Sweet, get to follow a new SPARTAN around. Wait, they meant 117. Damn it. I guess this is a cool idea for people that can't imagine things while reading words... Otherwise I have no interest in re-reading the same story.
Felix Ruiz is not that good, and I believe he's not suited for Halo. They should've picked someone better, but damn.... those greedy bastards...
ah... that typo reminds me when I first play halo, calling the chief 177. other then that at least we get a visual image of the chief looks like!
Bungie is like Apple. They are very good at creating new ideas in which to line their pockets with your good money. Think whatever you want. It's no longer an opinion. It's fact.
This is aimed for people who can not read, They had to boost sales some how lmfao. Seriously, Who buys comics anymore? No way I would buy a Book turned into a Comic, Chances are the Comic will snuff out info that was in the book and only focus on major points. I would rather buy the book...Wait who wants a Halo comic or book? Seriously...
hmm...i think showing master chiefs face will...idk kinda kill his character i thought the whole point was that you never see his face and he is a pure breed soldier...idk and he will be stupid looking if they are guna show his face the Least they can do is show it in a game as an easter egg
This is great! I couldn't stand the novel and gave up after one chapter. Maybe the comic will do a better job of holding my attention.
I love it how people think this is something thats new, do people know already that there has been 3 halo stories out in comic book form already? How about Gears of War which the newest issue comes out sometime this weekend, or Army of Two, Resistance, Prototype, Perfect Dark, Dragon Age and Dantes Inferno... why the big fuss for this Halo one thats been already done in a novel..? The news makes my brain hurt.
I just noticed in the linked video that the question of "Do your teammates get knocked out or do they take care of themselves?" was largely avoided by the bungie staffmember. I think he was kind of embarrassed that your AI Spartan teammates are invincible, which would, I suppose take away from the drama or immersion a campaign experience is supposed to offer. I remember hating that Sergeant Johnson could take an entire needler clip. Really sucked me out of the game.
I think after Reach we aren't going to see a Halo game for a while. Microsoft knows that Bungie is great at making Halo games, and they also know that they (or 343 Industries, rather) are going to have to follow up on Reach with something spectacular. Here's hoping they contract another awesome studio to make more great Halo games.
I'll have to keep my eyes open for this. Marvel and Halo sounds like a good partnership. The book is good, it explains much the games don't, It's because of the book I now understand who Master Chief really is......
to all the people who are talking about being able to see the MC's face in this comic: The picture comment says "John 177, sans MJOLNIR armor". sans means without. thats him. you don't have to wait. lol
finally in comic form those books were annoying + they are probably gonna show Master Chief's face:):):):):):):):):):):)
