343 Industries reveals new user milestone for sci-fi shooter; 11.7 billion kills, 388 million headshots recorded since launch; Competitive Skill Rank coming in April.
[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Microsoft confirmed with GameSpot that the 11.6 million figure counts all unique users, including guests. In addition, Microsoft said its presentation slide contained a typo.
"The 11.6 million figure encompasses all unique users who have played Halo 4 while connected to Xbox Live, including guest accounts," a Microsoft representative told GameSpot. "We'd also like to clarify that there was a typo in our PAX panel slide--the figure includes all users who have played any mode in Halo 4 (i.e. campaign, Forge, Spartan Ops, etc.) – not just online multiplayer."
The original story follows below
BOSTON--Today during a panel at PAX East, Microsoft's 343 Industries revealed that 11.6 million people have played Halo 4 multiplayer since launch in November. It is not clear if Microsoft counted guest accounts in the overall figure. The company could not be immediately reached for comment.
343 Industries parsed a range of other statistics during the presentation. According to the company's data, players have recorded 11.7 billion kills since launch and recorded 388 million headshots. Gamers have performed 193 million assassinations, 4.4 million of which were assassinations executed while in the air.
In addition, players have earned 24.5 billion medals in War Games, captured 30 million flags, and hijacked 64 million vehicles.
Also during the panel today, 343 Industries announced that the Halo 4 Competitive Skill Ranking (CSR) system will arrive sometime in April. Similar to Halo 2 and Halo 3, the system will span levels 1-50.
343 Industries also discussed the upcoming Halo 4 Title Update, which will enable "X-Markers" on the heads-up-display, update active camo systems, and tune weapons further. The new title update will also allow 343 Industries to implement further multiplayer changes and tweaks without forcing users to apply an update.
A new map--Forge Island--will launch April 11 as a free download. "This one is on us as a thank-you," 343 Industries said.
Obviously I like this game, which is attractive to me like Age of Wushu. I can build up my own world in the game freely.
I'm very new to Halo and I must say it very fun and very addicting and 100 times better then COD I got board of COD same play-style Run and Gun and it was way too easy for me, but in Halo 4 it much more of a challenge and I was unsure about Halo 4 but I'm happy I brought it (Well actually i got it for free thanks to a great deal)
You rank up too fast in this game and I can't wait for this CSR system
Finally a rank up system! It's something Halo 4 really needs, while I love the game I'm tried of working for nothing. The specialization are nothing special. I don't even use them! I thought they would be 4 perk, that only worked if you had that certain specialization activated. I'd rather have extra ammo than get more xp because that helps me within game. Halo Reach was all about who played the most and I hated that. It was so boring and the "Ranks" did not mean anything. Halo 2 and Halo 3 the ranks meant something, thats why I put many many hours and continuously played Halo 3, to get that 50. I never did, but it was something I worked hard for and thats what I enjoyed. If this rank system is at all similar to Reach's I'm gonna hate it, I even have a few friends that are bored with Halo 4 because there is no rank up system. If its like Halo 3 (While not perfect) I will greatly enjoy Halo 4 even more and go back to it cuz right now I'm on a halo break.
Beyond aesthetic armor, there's no place for a progression system in Halo. I rented it for a weekend and decided grinding ranks to do junk I could have done five seconds into a Halo 3 or Reach match wasn't worth it.
"11.7 billion kills, 388 million headshots recorded since launch"
inflated numbers much? how about headline the number of shots fired, too? lol, promotional articles.
Wait a minute, I thought Microsoft didn't give anything away for free to their customers? lol!!
THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!
HALO 4 is AWESOME.
@Adapttttttt totally agree while I like the campaigns on reach and halo4 the multiplayer has never been as good as halo3
@Adapttttttt I guess you couldn't adapttttttt
@Adapttttttt Halo died after Halo 1
@Adapttttttt cant wait to get destiny on the ps4 :)
I love Halo 4 and it sounds like it's getting better, because I loved Halo 2 the most, it had THE best Ranking system and for a while the Best clan system.
pretty cool achievement, too bad im skipping it loved 1-3 but now the story seems to be lacking. And as for the MP I already have a CoD in my shelf don't need another.
@GaM3RN3RD I suggest buying it once the Ranking System comes out. The new "CoD" things work really well and even if you don't like them, there are playlists reminiscent of previous games like Team Throwdown, Team Snipers, Doubles, etc.
The regional filter sucks though. They should fix it. Otherwise, make it manual so people can choose their own fvcking region
Great that they clarified, instead of just throwing out a number that isn't really representative of what they just said. I'd be curious to see just what percent of those 11.6 million were guest accounts.
Let me know when Halo 4 reaches 1billion matches played. It took Halo 3 less than a year to accomplish that, I think. If not ~1.5 years tops. 343 just feels it's necessary to re-market their poorly designed video game with meager stats and updates that should have been implemented since release.
HOT dog. They just spanked WoW good there. I wonder how much they have in player base now? 8mil? 9mil? 6? haha who cares anyways. Nice to see so many playing something besides CoD.
A forge island? Meh, I'd prefer some remakes of old maps just copy paste a few from reach how hard can it be ffs. -.-
@crashmer well, they will be making old maps because that's what people do in forge. I don't know about reach maps because I never see alot of fuss about reach, more halo 2 and 3. I wouldn't be suprised if that happened, they have one from halo 3 dlc already.
@cronos809 @crashmer Forge is great don't take me wrong but what I'm talking about is really minimal work. When I say Reach maps I'm mostly refering to the remakes they did in the Halo anniversary. Quite a few from H1 and H2 in there, great maps like beaver creek, prisioner, headlong, etc. They would have to be tuned a little for infinity slayer, (don't want my ordnance falling 2 stories below in prisioner although that would be funny lol).
@crashmer Reach was probably the first Halo game that got me interested in the series. I enjoyed the odd ball sports-like kill the man with the bomb game and the overhead sniper/survival games. The special abilities and jetpack and invis was great additions. Haven't played 4 yet. But I'll agree that Reach had great maps.
Also, it is a bit of work to recode a level and have it fit with new models and mechanics. You wouldn't want to be caught in a mid jump because some odd polygon sticking out got tangled on your character. Crappy small example but yeah, refitting old stuff still takes a bit of work they could use to make new ones.
@telaros @crashmer They would be just minor modifications, the mechanics are essentially the same just a bit faster. Only difference is that sprint is available by default now, but since it was already in Reach all the accomodations are already taken care of. Trust me, exact replicas of the Reach maps would fit perfectly into Halo 4. That I think would make Halo 4 the best multiplayer halo ever.
11.7 billion kills and out of THOSE only 388 million were headshots?!?! That's TERRIBAD HOLY SHIT!!! How embarrassing (-__-)
Im a grenade spammer. I don't play like this, but people play like this and it works on me, so I do it as well, and it works on them.
@PSYCHOV3N0M its hard to get a head shot when people are getting killed with rockets or getting ran over
Seriously every time improvements happen to this game I start to enjoy this game more and more. Keep on fixing this game 343i.
